Capacity To Show Energy Efficiency

Metal Roof Pressure wash and painting with roller easy home care

You might not be aware of this, but colors play a huge role in making a house energy efficient. Since this paint will be applied on the roof, it will play a direct role in the intake of the suns energy inside the house.

In fact, you can save money on your bills if you choose your roof color wisely. How so, you may ask? Well, the paints that come in lighter shades do a much better job of reflecting the suns heat and UV rays than the darker shades.

As a result, your house will remain cool, and you wont have to waste money paying hefty bills for the AC.

On the other hand, if you live in a cooler place, and would prefer a warmer home, choosing a dark color would be the best for you. Darker colors have lower efficiency in keeping the house cool, and therefore, would allow some heat energy to enter and keep the interiors warm.

What Can I Put On A Leaking Metal Roof

Now that you’ve rolled everything up and prepared each room for a better seal, it’s time to apply urethane cement to seal the leaks in the metal ceiling. Before doing this, make sure you have located the areas with damaged sealants and membranes and have previously applied a metal roofing primer and fiberglass roofing plaster.

How To Repaint A Metal Roof

After preparing the metal roof through a powerwash treatment, you need to ensure that the right processes are used to paint the roof. First and foremost, the right type of paint should be selected.

Acrylic latex paint works well for bare metal roofs or painting over old paint coats. The combination of oil-based alkyd paint and a galvanized metal primer can work well too, ensuring that the paint is locked in and adhered in the right manner. With so many brands on the market, its important to look for a paint that offers the attributes you require. Water resistance, fire resistance, insect repellent capabilities, and UV reflection are all properties you may seek.

Application is a relatively simple task. You can use a sprayer to reach high or steeped metal roofs. Alternatively, rollers and paint brushes that are designed specifically for corrugated metal are equally capable of providing the quick coverage you crave. Only a few coats are needed, although you can usually judge this for yourself.

If all else fails, or youre worried about safety , you can always hire a professional to repaint metal roof solutions on your behalf.

Application Dos & Donts

Generally, application of any of these systems will consist of applying one coat of rust inhibitive primer and two coats of finish with proper dry time between coats. It is important that the primer be rust inhibitive on ferrous surfaces. In the case of oil products you will most likely be looking at a red oxide metal primer. Acrylic DTMs are also available in a red oxide variety. Both types also commonly come in gray and sometimes white, but red oxide is preferred for the greatest rust inhibitive capability. Elastomeric coatings should be applied over a coat of red oxide acrylic DTM primer.

If you have a sound existing coating and are applying a coating of the same type of product over it, i.e. oil over oil, then fully priming the roof is not necessary. Spot prime any bare areas and then apply two coats of finish product over the entire roof.

Application via brush, roller, spray or a combination thereof is acceptable provided proper film build of each coat is achieved. Use a film gauge to check this if necessary.

Avoid painting too early or too late into the day, especially in spring or autumn weather. Dew is often the culprit when visual problems occur on an exterior paint film. Painting a surface too early in the morning when the weather has been very cool does not give dew time to dissipate and can result in adhesion and blushing issues. Painting too late in the day allows dew to form before the paint film is dry and can also cause blushing.

    • To do the cleaning prep work, you can use a power washer. If you dont have one, you can use a solution of trisodium phosphate, water, and paint scraper and scrub out the dirt manually.
    • With the right paint in hand, you can roll on, brush-on, or even spray on your color on the roof.
    • For safety measures, dont forget the safety harness and non-slip shoes when painting on the roof.
