Once you know your camper roof is rubber, and you know if its TPO or EPDM you can use this guide to learn the basics of RV rubber roof repair, resealing, and replacement.

How do I know when to do what?

Well, it depends a lot on the situation. If youre out camping and theres a hole in your RV rubber roof, youre going to need to do some quick repairs.

If its the end of the camping season and you want to get your camper roof ready for winter, you may need to do some preventive resealing.

If nothing has ever been done to maintain or repair your campers roof for many years, you may need to think about replacement.

Remove Rv Roof Coating And Epdm Rubber Roofing

The first thing I noticed is that there were two layers. On the bottom is the original EPDM rubber roof layer. I know its EPDM rubber and not TPO rubber because of the black backing. On top of my EPDM roof is a thin RV roof coating that was applied later. RV roof coatings are basically a liquid that is painted on top of existing roofs that creates a new rubbery layer for waterproofing. I just left the roof coating stuck to the EPDM roofing and pulled them up together.

This step went pretty quickly. There was an adhesive under the bottom layer of rubber that was still pretty well stuck in many places, but with a good bit of force it peeled up cleanly. I just used a utility knife to cut it into sections and pulled it up bit by bit, tracing around the various fixtures attached to the roof. Now I could see all the damaged plywood roof decking beneath.

HEADS UP! You may not want to peel off the rubber first! I chose to peel off the rubber before removing fixtures just so I could see what I was dealing with. But I have to warn you, the old adhesive was still sticky, and a pain to walk on. And whenever I knelt on it I felt like it was tearing the hair off my kneecaps! Another drawback is that once I started removing the fixtures, lots of little chunks of caulk and roof sealant were sticking to the adhesive. If you think youll be saving the roof decking plywood , then you might save yourself some cleanup trouble by removing the fixtures first and then peeling up the rubber!

What Is The Best Rv Roof Sealant

The best sealant to use depends on the roof surface and the application. For EPDM, TPO and aluminum roofs, the recommended material is M-1 sealant .

If youre sealing around a roof vent or skylight, industry experts recommend using SB-140 butyl caulking .

For resealing RV windows, the experts again suggest M-1 sealant, but Duralink is also used and has excellent adhesion to glass.

If you are sealing around irregular surfaces, the best sealant to use is WebSeal tape.

It has a unique, woven fabric backing with microsealant composition so that it bonds perfectly on flat surfaces as well as around curves, angles, bolts and pipes.

Its also highly weather resistant, and remains flexible even in climates with temperatures as low as negative 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

How To Tell If Your Rv Roof Needs A Reseal

To see if its time to reseal your RV roof you can usually tell just by looking at the sealant. If any cracks or holes are forming in it you know its time for a reseal or touchup.

You can also test the sealant by taking a metal scraper and pressing it into it. If the sealant is still soft and the scraper just makes an indent, its still good.

If its dry and brittle and the scraper pokes a hole in it you will want to remove the old sealant and add new or use EternaBond over it.

Traditionally people use RV self-leveling lap sealant to keep all of the roof accessories and edges of the RV roof sealed and weatherproof. And thats a great time tested way to go.

Just make sure you remove all the old caulks and thoughroly clean the roof just like you would for patches before applying the new RV sealant.

Rv Rubber Roof Replacement

Knowing when to fully replace an RV rubber roof can be a little more difficult than knowing when to repair or reseal.

EPDM roofs usually start to look more worn faster because its a black rubber layer with a white coating on top.

The coating can wear off pretty quickly and make the RV roof look worn and damaged but most of the time white roof coating is all it needs.

TPO roofs always appear white or grayish and they can look pretty ok when in reality they are worn and in need of replacement.

Picking The Right Roof Vent Replacement

Alright. Once you finally get home from your RV adventures or have some spare time to stop by an RV shop of sorts, its a good idea to pick up a replacement RV roof vent. Sure, duct tape or gorilla tape can be pretty sturdy against different types of elements and can last for a good bit of time, but it definitely is not meant as a permanent repair.

Ideally, when choosing a replacement, you would choose a roof vent that is as close to the original as you can get, so you wont have to drill any new holes into the roof of your RV just because you got a different size.

However, if you do choose to get a different roof vent than the one youre replacing, there is a way to get around the difficulty of the screw holes of the new vent not lining up with the screw holes already in the roof of your RV from the old one. We will get into that later.

Stay Ahead On Maintenance

We cannot overstate the importance of preventative maintenance. Regularly checking your RVs roof for damage and cracking seals is the best way to notice small changes that may occur over time. Note that the warranty on your roof may depend on having your RV inspected annually and evidence that youve been doing preventative maintenance.

Maintaining your RV roof seals is important to prevent a leak and serious damage. The seam where the rubber roof met the sidewalls allowed water to seep underneath, doing extensive damage to the substructure.

Cracks and sun damage to your RVs seals can potentially allow water into your RV. Leaks can often go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred. Water sitting in your RVs ceiling and walls can cause mold to grow, leading to potential health issues for anyone regularly spending time inside the RV. Of course water penetration left unchecked over a long period of time can lead to serious structural damage and rot.

We inspect the roof of our RV about once a month. We recommend that you regularly inspect your RVs roof as well and that you dont put off even the most minor repairs. Tending to minor wear or damage as it occurs may be easy and inexpensive. But delaying regular DIY maintenance and repairs can lead to extensive damage and very expensive professional repairs.

How To Repair Aluminum Rv Roof

Travel Trailer Camper RV Damaged Roof Replacement

Have a metal roof on your RV? Heres how to seal and repair their punctures.

Resealing aluminum RV roofs

For aluminum and other metal RV roofs, resealing is done with a special coating designed for the material, such as Dicors Metal RV roof coating. This forms a rubber-like top layer and is resistant to mildew and rust.

Of course, you wouldnt apply a thick white coating to a rounded metal RV like an Airstream. For these , sealing joints and rivets with a caulking gun is essential.

Repairing punctures or tears

Depending on the size of the puncture, you may be able to repair your metal roof with a peel and stick patch. Make sure to buy one that is designed for metal roofs, as the adhesive formula is a little different. Simply clean the area, stick the patch over it, and roll out air bubbles with a small roller.

For more significant damages, the best way to repair a metal roof is by replacing the metal panel, which is a process that will vary depending on your particular RV.
