  • When installing shingles, make sure the nails are embedded securely into the felt and sheathing. Over time, the suns heat will cause the roof and shingles to expand, making the nails pop out of place and thus increasing the risk of a leak.
  • Because the roof is sloped, make sure you layer the shingles from bottom to top, overlapping the top set with the bottom. This will ensure your roof is protected from all the weather elements.
  • Rent a nail gun. Most can be rented for about $20 a day. The gun usually comes with a measurement guide that can save a lot of time. The standard width between each row of shingles is 5 inches.
  • Install The Drip Edge

Metal drip edge isnt usually required , but it gives roof edges a nice finished look, prevents shingles from curling over the edge, and keeps water from running directly down your fascia boards.

Before you install the underlayment, fasten the drip edge that covers the fascia on the eaves. The whole length of the fascia is probably not perfectly straight, so dont snap a line just hold the drip edge snug against the fascia and fasten it through the top into the decking with roofing nails. Nail it every couple of feet.

Install the drip edge on the gable ends of the roof after you finish installing your underlayment. Start at the bottom side of the gable, and overlap the sections of drip edge a few inches as you work your way up the roof . Use a tin snips to cut the drip edge to size.

    Tear Off The Old Shingles

Its impossible to properly install new flashing and underlayment if you dont tear off the old roof beforehand. When tearing off the existing shingles, be sure to remove all the old nails or pound them flat. Protruding nails will tear holes in your new shingles. If you have movable items near your house and youre worried they might get damaged, relocate them. Invest in a few large tarps to protect your plants and landscaping and to catch the thousands of nails that will rain down off the roof. It can be downright impossible to remove old self-stick ice-and-water underlayment, but its OK if you have to leave it in place. And if at all possible, have the rented trash bin parked close to the house so you can toss in the old shingles right from the roof.

This gambrel garage roof was the victim of excessive algae growth and missing shingles. Algae growth is a sign of trapped moisture in the roofing system, upon further inspection insulation was found between the roof rafters on the bottom side of the roof sheathing which was trapping moisture and reducing ventilation efficiency.

Fryer Construction LLC. removed 9 square of 3-tab asphalt roof shingles and associated roofing felt underlayment and installed “Owens Corning 25-year supreme black onyx 3-tab shingles” with associated roofing felt underlayment, white aluminum drip edge, and “Owens Corning VentSure sky Runner LTE Rolled Ridge Vent”.

While on site Fryer Construction LLC. also removed and replaced water damaged window and garage door trim for a discounted rate.

This project took days to complete from start to finish.

    Preparation Prior To Laying Shingles

Pitched roof insulation: Steel garage roofing sheets

In most cases installing shingles will mean a considerable amount of preparation. The roof probably already has one or two layers that may need to be removed. Rotted sheathing may need to be replaced and new felt may be needed.

If your current roof has a single layer of shingles that are still in reasonable condition the new shingles may be laid right over them, but if there are already two layers or if the existing shingles are in poor condition removing the old shingles will be necessary. Note that there will already be two layers showing at the very edge of the roof when there is only one layer the first layer is only a starter run placed only at the edge. If there are three or more layers at the edge it will mean the entire roof has at least two layers.

Shingles are best removed with a special tool, a shingle removal shovel. These are not particularly expensive and are highly recommended as they will cut the time and effort necessary by a huge amount. Shingles, and the nails holding them, can be removed with a hammer and prybar, but this special shovel will make the work of removing shingles much easier and cut the time required by ¾.

Check the existing wood sheathing for soft spots and repair or replace them as necessary. The roof in the example had just one such area a 1X2 foot piece that had never been nailed properly and simply needed to be re-nailed.

How To Replace Roof Cap Shingles

Dear Tim: I was inspecting my asphalt shingle roof the other day. At the top of the roof where the peak is, I noticed some defects. My shingles are only six years old so I was shocked to see deterioration. The shingles covering the peak of the roof do not look like all the other shingles on my roof. The color is the same, but they have a strange shape. How can I replace the defective ones without damaging adjacent shingles? What is causing the shingles to go bad so fast? Sheila P., Waynesville, Ohio

Sheila: Congratulations on doing that roof inspection by yourself. Not many have the nerve to get up and walk on roofs. Just last week I was up on my friends steep roof helping to remove a tree that had fallen on his home. The only mistake I made was wearing nice work boots that have a fairly stiff sole. My sneakers that have a more flexible sole would have given me much better traction on the asphalt shingles.

Seven months ago I published a small book that speaks to what you discovered. Its called Roofing Ripoff. I was inspired to produce the book after my own 30-year-warranty asphalt shingle roof began to fall apart in just 10 years!

I did extensive research into why asphalt shingles are failing so fast. In my opinion, the evidence points to too much air being blown into the liquid asphalt as the shingles are being made. This extra oxygen pre-ages the shingles. I cover this in great detail in my short book.

The Full Scoop Lets Compare A 30 X 30 Garage Roof

Both metal and asphalt roofing get the job done when it comes to sheltering a building, but they really part ways in respect to durability, energy efficiency, and long-term savings.

Lets look at a 30 x 30 garage for an example. But before we go any further, lets just clarify that the example and prices are not meant to be an official quote. The numbers in our example are for informational purposes only but are accurate to the best of our knowledge. Every roof project is different. Rest assured we have a dedicated and knowledgeable team that would be happy to get you a custom quote.

On the surface, an asphalt shingle roof is the slim winner at $1,194 versus $1,267 for an ABM Panel metal roof . But if you look at the bigger picture, metal is the obvious choice. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association states on their website, If a residential roof is more than 20 years old, it is a prime candidate for reroofing.

Compare that to our ABM Panel that comes with 40-year paint warranty. There is no question that a metal roof can stand the test of time better than asphalt shingles in most situations, and contractors will tell you that there is very little keeping a properly maintained metal roof from lasting over 100 years . Metal lasts longer, is more energy efficient, is more beautiful, and can cost about the same as asphalt shingles.

Lets take a closer look at the cost.

How To Calculate The Cost Of A Garage Roof

Another key factor you need to consider when deciding on a garage roof material is cost. While the cost of replacing a garage roof will also depend on the size of your garage, you cant control that. You can control the materials you choose to install. You can cut costs by choosing more cost-effective materials from the list above.

Once youve chosen your material, calculating the cost of your garage roof replacement is simple. Ideally, the roofing professional you choose may have a cost breakdown of other roofing materials by square foot. If so, all you have to do is multiply the size of your garage by their cost. They may even do this for you on the project estimate they provide. If you havent chosen a roofing professional yet, or want to buy your roofing materials yourself, you can calculate the cost yourself.

Dont forget to include other products that your roof may need. Depending on the condition of your existing garage roof, these extras may include:

Installing Roof Shingles In 11 Steps:

  • To start installing shingles, line up aluminum drip edge flush with the edge of the roof and make a pencil line at the top on each end of the house.
  • Using the chalk line, snap a line between the two marks to get a straight edge.
  • Pull the drip edge down about a half-inch from that line to create a gap between the drip edge and the fascia board.
  • Nail the drip edge in place using 1¼-inch galvanized roofing nails and a hammer.
  • Repeat steps for gabled ends, installing the drip edge up the roof along the gable.
  • Lay out 30-lb. asphalt roofing felt paper and nail it in place using 1¼-inch galvanized roofing nails.
  • To lay out the design for the shingles, begin at the bottom of the roof and place a tape measure ½ inch from the edge of the roof to ensure the shingles overhang the drip edge.
  • Using the chalk line, snap a straight line on each 5-inch increment.
  • Use the chalk line to snap a straight line vertically every 6 inches.
  • Install a starter course by cutting off the three tabs on a shingle, leaving only the top tar section.

    Remove Existing Roof And Underlayment

The original plan was to preserve a portion of the existing roof since the shingles still had some life left in them. However, the plywood sheathing underneath the shingles was beginning to fail. So instead the whole roof was removed and the decking was being replaced.

The guys began by removing the existing shingles and underlayment from the existing house. They worked methodically so as to avoid throwing pieces of shingle and nails onto the ground below.

To remove the shingles and underlayment, the guys used roofing spades to dig underneath and pry up the nails.

Pro-Talk: Underlayment is often referred to as felt paper or tar paper.

Install The Eaves Protection Membrane And Cover The Valleys

    • 2.1 – Install self-adhesive waterproof membrane 36-72″ wide on all fascia boards.
    • 2.2 – Unroll and align the membrane so that it overlaps the metal drip edge by 3/8″.
    • 2.3 – Temporarily attach the roof membrane at a few equidistant locations.
    • 2.4 – Fold back the lower half and peel off the release film.
    • 2.5 – Reposition and press down to ensure good adherence.
    • 2.6 – Remove the temporary installations and fold back the upper half of the membrane.
    • 2.7 – Peel off the release film, reposition and press down to ensure good adherence.
    • 2.8 – Repeat to cover the eaves and fascia.
    • 2.9 – Lap the end joins by 6″ and the lateral joins by 3″.
    • 2.10 – Install roof vents and other roof elements on the decking.
    • 2.11 – Cover valleys with self-adhesive waterproof membrane. Begin at the lower section of the roof. Center a 36″ strip so that half of the strip covers each side. Overlap each section of the membrane by 6-12″.
    • 2.12 – Lay the self-adhesive membrane to extend 4″ up the sides of the chimney and to form a 12″ strip on the roof around the chimney.
    • 2.13 – Cover ridges and crests so that half a strip covers each side.

Can I Replace My Own Garage Roof

    Garage Solutions

My wife and I are getting ready to sell our home, and our detached 2 car garage roof is in desperate need for a new roof. It has two layers of asphalt shingles over the top of cedar shingles. I recently got a quote, and the guy said it would cost around 3K, as the tear off is a pain with cedar shingles. He also said he’d have to lay plywood down, since there is no solid deck under the cedar shingles. I’m starting to think I should do this myself, as it is a simple roof. Is this something the average weekend handyman can do? When I factor in materials, cost of tool rental, dumpster, etc, is it even worth it? Any input would be great.

How To Shingle A Garage Roof

A garage should keep your car clean and dry, but it serves no purpose if the garage roof leaks. You can solve the problem yourself, though, with a trip to the home improvement store and a moderate amount of work. Laying shingles on a garage roof is not a difficult task. If youre not afraid of heights, it can be a breeze.

    Step 1 Estimating the Job

Youll need to know about how many shingles to buy. Determine the square footage of your roof first by multiplying the width times the length of each side. Shingles are estimated by the square, which is 100 square feet. A dozen or more bundles make up a square, depending on the texture and quality of the material. Also, plan the job on a day with no forecast of rain.

    Step 2 Staying Safe

    Step 3 Removing Old Shingles

Your first task will be removing the old shingles and inspecting the decking. Use a shingle scraper starting from the lower edge of the roof and working up. Leave the old felt if possible, but you can patch areas where it is damaged. After the old covering is removed, use new felt to patch any areas where wood shows through. Tack it down with plastic round-cap nails.

    Step 4 Installing New Shingles

    Step 5 Finishing the Job

    Additional Components And Accessories

Aside from choosing the right material for your garage roof, bear in mind the other products and components your roof may need based on its condition. The decking of your roof is also a critical component of a quality roof. When it comes to this base layer of the roof, we recommend you use plywood. Its affordable, durable, and easy to replace if necessary.

If your garage and home share the same cooling or heating system, its also a good idea to provide insulation for your garage roof. Otherwise, youre likely to lose a lot of energy and have substantially higher electricity bills. When it comes to insulation, there are a lot of details to take into account. Thats why its best to leave this part of the project to experienced professional roofers.

    Lay Leak Barrier Underlayment

In lieu of felt paper for the first course, the roofers laid Leak Barrier MS300 which creates a watertight seal to better prevent water and ice from finding a way underneath.

Pro-Tip: This type of underlayment is highly recommended in areas where the average temperature for January is 30º F or less.

MS300 is a long roll of rubberized sheeting which adheres directly to the roof decking. If you remember, Steves crew had laid felt paper over the addition to act as a temporary waterproof barrier. Even though it is not well shown in the pictures, the roofers removed the first course of felt paper and lapped the MS300 underneath the next course. This is important because otherwise water could penetrate beneath the underlayment.

The MS300 and felt paper was secured using staplers, and, when the shingles go on, the roofing nails will hold it place too.

Pro-Tip: This type of underlayment is considered self-healing meaning it will seal around the fasteners to remain waterproof.

Pro-Tip: In some areas this underlayment is required by local building codes and should be applied starting at a roofs eaves and extending upslope a minimum of 24from the exterior wall line.

How to Shingle an Outdoor Storage Shed Roof
    • 11.1 – Snap a chalk line 7/8″ from the ridge on both sides of the roof. If roof trusses are evident, the gap should be 1 ¾” the length of the ridge. Leave 8-10″ along a wall or chimney.
    • 11.2 – Measure the thickness of the sheathing and adjust the circular saw to that measurement.
    • 11.3 – Cut the sheathing and be sure not to cut down to the rafters. Follow the two chalk lines along the ridge.
    • 11.4 – Use a wood chisel to complete the cut at the ends
    • 11.5 – Remove the sheathing panel with a pry bar. Remove all nails along the cut.
    • 11.6 – Install the shingles up to the ridge so that they cover the sealed strip on both sides of the ridge.
    • 11.7 – Cut the shingles covering the vent opening.
    • 11.8 – Center the vent on the ridge.
    • 11.9 – Nail at the top of the opening every 6″, alternating from side to side.
