What Is A Jerkinhead Roof

Roofer Explains Roofing Terms: Roof Components and their meaning | Roofing Insights

If you see a roof that combines design elements from both gable and hip roofs, chances are that it is a jerkinhead roof.

Also referred to as a clipped gable or an English hip roof, jerkinhead roofs essentially resemble a gable roof but with clipped or shortened ends, or alternatively a hip roof that has two shorter sides.

Youll usually see this sort of roof designed in such a way that the clipped sides or hips dont disrupt the view from the top floor dormer windows.

The somewhat eccentric name jerkinhead is of unknown origin, but is said to possibly come from the old Scottish kirkin-head, or the rooftop of a church.

No matter how you define the style, jerkinhead roofs tend to be more stable than gable roofs or hip roofs due to the way that the points or edges of the roof turn down, lending them greater wind resistance or protection against wind uplift.

Higher pitched jerkinhead roofs also allow for more living space or storage space under the roof, thus adding to their appeal.

This sort of roof can be crafted from nearly any standard roofing material, including asphalt or wood shingles, metal shingles, slate, or even composites.

Jerkinhead roofing tends to be costlier than its gable or hip roof alternatives, but it can be worth the investment due to its durability and allowance for extra usable square footage under the rooftop.

Definition Of Collar Tie In Roof Framing

Definition: A collar tie is a horizontal roof rafter compression connector that is located in the uppermost third of the span of a pair of opposed sloped or “gable roof” rafters.

By upper third, here we mean one third of the length of the rafter from ridge to top plate. In finding this location we do not count the additional length of the rafter that supports the roof eaves, overhang, or soffit.

A collar tie is used to prevent rafters from separating from the ridge, a structural failure that can be caused by snow loads, wind loads, or un-balanced roof loading for any other event or force that causes the roof to begin to move downwards or to collapse.

Above: a roof framed with just collar ties, or with nothing but a ridge board, is unable to resist sagging at the ridge and outwards bulging at the side walls unless specially-engineered features are included. So what good is a collar tie anyway?

Collar ties help keep the rafters against the ridge board when there are un-balanced roof loads such as during high winds or when most of the snow load is on one slope but not the opposing slope of a roof. .

Watch out: located in the upper third of a gable roof, and particularly for larger roofs with a longer run or span, a collar tie are not likely to prevent rafter sagging from uniform vertical loading and thus may not prevent spreading or bulging walls when the roof is loaded by downwards forces including its own weight.

What Is A Pyramid Roof

As you might guess, this is a type of roof that is shaped like a pyramid.

A type of hip roof with no gables or vertical sides, pyramid roofs are usually used for smaller homes like cabins and bungalows, or sheds, garages, or other outbuildings.

Pyramid roofs are popular in hurricane or windstorm prone areas, since they are extremely wind resistant.

They also provide good ventilation and extra storage or attic space, or the interior can be left open for a high ceiling.

The overhanging eaves of a pyramid roof help to improve energy efficiency as well.

Note that pyramid roofs may be costlier to construct and maintain due to the complexity of the roof design, but they do provide the aforementioned advantages.

They can be crafted from nearly any common roofing material including asphalt shingles, composite shingles, metal shingles, slate, clay or concrete tiles, or wooden shingles or shakes.

Rafter Support When Rafters Are At Right Angles To The Ceiling Joists

Where ceiling joists are installed, if the ceiling framing is not in parallel with the rafters, then equivalent rafter ties are required to be added, or a knee wall can be used when placed on a supporting beam that sits on the building the tops of the wall plates of the exterior walls.

The top of the raised beam should be at least 1″ above the finished ceiling that runs below the ceiling joists in order to prevent any telegraphing of roof loads through the finished ceiling below.- CMHC 2014

Where ceiling joists are not parallel to rafters, an equivalent rafter tie shall be installed in a manner to provide a continuous tie across the building, at a spacing of not more than 4 feet o.c.

The connections shall be in accordance with Tables 2308.10.4.1 and 2304.9.1, or connections of equivalent capacities shall be provided.

Where ceiling joists or rafter ties are not provided at the top of the rafter support walls, the ridge formed by these rafters shall also be supported by a girder conforming to Section 2308.4.

What Temperature Should Roof Vents Be Set At

It is generally recommended that roof vents be set at a temperature of between 90 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit. This range of temperatures is optimal for attic fans in terms of both efficiency and effectiveness.

Adjusting the temperature setting to outside of this range can decrease the fans overall performance. Its also important to adjust the temperature setting to higher levels during the summer and lower levels during the winter.

If you have a successful solar hot water heater or other passive solar or solar assisted system, you may want to reduce hot air build up in your attic, forestalling a need for cooling/air-conditioning.

Gable Roofs Form Triangle Ends

A gable roof has a center peak and sloping sides which form a triangle at each end. The peak is determined by the width of the roof and its pitch, or angle of slope. The peak is measured from the top of the end wall to the top of the point. Peak height can vary from almost nothing on a low-slope roof to 7 or 8 feet or more on a steep roof.

Which Roof Framing Members Are In Tension & Which In Compression

In our sketch shown hthe mid-span rafter tie is shown as under “neutral” force. That’s really only true in comparison to the forces on the higher collar tie in the upper 1/3 of the roof or the lower rafter tie in the lower 1/3 of the roof.

In practice, temporary loads placed on the center of the roof such as from snow, workers, or bundles of shingles during re-roofing will press inwards and the mid-span rafter tie will be under compression.

Mathematicians and engineers discussing collar ties and rafter ties explain that collar ties and rafter ties under a gable roof are in enormous tension and that the mathematics of the roof forces are the same for collar ties and rafter ties.

That’s true for horizontal ties in the lower third of the roof.

A Tension tie is a general term to refer to any structural member that is subject to net tension: that is, the forces or loads on the member place it in tension or “stretching” forces. The most-common tension tie observed in roof framing for a conventionally-framed gable roof is the ceiling joist that forms the bottom chord of the roof triangle shown below.

Really?: I and other sources consider that under normal conditions forces on a sloped roof’s exterior surface are pressing downwards: a condition that will indeed cause the “triangle” formed by the sloped roof to flatten, pushing out the building walls upon which the lower edges of the roof are resting and to which they’re normally fastened.

What Is The Purpose Of A Roof Ridge Vent

A ridge vent is an important part of a homes roofing system. Installed at the peak of a sloped roof, the ridge vent allows damp, warm air to escape from the attic. A properly installed ridge vent increases energy efficiency and prolongs the life of your roof.

Do I need a ridge cap?

Wherever you have two roof planes coming together at an angle, you get either a peak or a valley. Since so much water flows through the roof valleys, they must be protected by extensive roof flashing networks to keep your roof dry and leak-free. With the peaks, a special covering called a ridge cap must be used.

How Effective Are Turbine Roof Vents

Turbine roof vents are one of the most effective ways to vent hot attic air. They are incredibly effective at venting hot air, but theres not always room for them. When there isnt enough room for ridge vents in an attic, turbine vents are typically the next best option.

They are very flexible regarding placement, and theres almost always room for them. It just depends on the shape of your roof and what youre trying to do, but they are great in any situation.

Its almost safer to say that turbine roof vents are the most effective at venting hot air than to list their drawbacks. Their only drawback is that they may not be aesthetically pleasing to everybody, especially those looking to a seamless finish.

Asphalt Roofing Shingles

Relatively lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to install, asphalt shingles are the best choice for most houses. They come in sheets that are layered on a roof to give the illusion of more expensive single shingles, such as cedar and slate, that are installed one shingle at a time.

What Is A Skillion Roof

Roof Designs: Terms, Types, and Pictures

Also called a shed roof or a lean-to roof, skillion roofs are single-angled sloped roofs that can be attached to a taller wall or be an alternative to a flat roof for a stand-alone structure.

Skillion roofs are common for additions to existing homes along with being a good choice for sheds and porches, but more contemporary style buildings may feature a skillion roof as a design statement.

Skillion roofs have some significant advantages if your property is located in the mountains or northern midwest or New England, since their slope allows for quick snow and water runoff, which makes them ideal for regions that get heavy snow or rainfall.

Skillion roofs tend to be a less expensive choice given their lack of complexity to build.

Standing seam metal roofing is perhaps the best choice for a skillion roof, particularly since it allows for the installation of PV solar panels, which naturally increase the energy efficiency of the home.

The Type Of Roof Vent For A Roof Ridge

One of the most popular roof vents homeowners have today is installed in the ridge of a roof. Its appropriately called a ridge vent.

A ridge vent is cut into the ridge of a roof and runs the entire length of the ridge. Ridge vents are extremely popular because theyre not noticeable from the ground.

While there are two types of ridge vents, the specific type your roof will have depends on your attics ventilation system.

For an active ventilation system, theres a ridge vent with a baffle . For a passive ventilation system, theres a ridge vent without a baffle .

While both do the job, a ridge vent without a baffle allows debris, rain, snow, insects, etc., to enter your attic. This is just something to keep in mind when choosing the type of vent you want for your roof replacement.

What Is A Mansard Roof

Mansard roofs or French roofs are a style of roof originally designed by architect Francois Mansert that is made up of four double sloped sides that meet to form a low-pitched roof in the middle.

Valued for the extra living space referred to as a garret or loft or attic storage provided by the taller roof, mansard roofs are often used as a way to add flexibility to a home since they make it easy to build future additions.

The sloped sides may be flat or curved, but the lower slope always has a steeper pitch than the upper one.

Mansard roofs can have a range of silhouettes, such as concave, convex, or straight angle.

Keep in mind that adding dormer windows is essential for bringing in light, especially if you plan to use the garret or attic as living space.

Higher-end properties may feature decorative stonework, wood or stone quoins or similar masonry work, or other trim around the dormers.

Note that mansard roofs are typically more expensive than other types of roof, due to all the extra details that go into them, but they can be worth it for the future flexibility and the value they add to a property.

Accordingly, if you are designing and building a brand-new home, you may want to consider a mansard roof.

These types of roofs can be built out of nearly any type of roofing material, but distinctive types of metal like copper or zinc can make a real statement.

Should Roof Vents Be Open Or Closed

During the winter, you should certainly keep your roof vents exposed do not cover them! Roof ventilation helps to maintain consistent temperatures throughout the winter.

Closing your vents causes the attic to become excessively warm and dry, creating a breeding ground for mildew and pests.

Keeping your roof vents open maintains a consistent temperature on your roof, preventing dangerous ice dams, which occur when water backs up beneath your shingles, freezing and causing damage to your roofing components and structure, as well as your gutters.

Snow and ice on the roof melt quickly when the attic becomes too warm owing to blocked vents. This allows water to flow freely between the shingles and down to the gutters. Uneven roof temperatures generated by blocked vents induce the troublesome refreezing.
