How To Put Shingles On A Shed Roof

Do You Need To Prepare The Roof

TUFF SHED INSTALL/SHE SHED??? | Home Depot Shed Install

Once you got the measurements and the rolled roofing, you should prepare the roof for installing the roofing.

  • Clean the roof

You cannot just go ahead and apply the rolled roofing. Its vital that you get rid of the excess grime, dirt, or any other impurities from the roof. Dont hesitate to brush the roof and even to use a leaf blower for blowing all the leaves and debris that may be lying on the roof.

Put on some long pants and work gloves during the cleaning. Make sure that the shoes come with deep ridges so that they ensure a sturdy grip. Stay safe and dont go on top of the roof for hosing it. You should remain in a safe place at all times.

Dont forget to clean the gutters as well if your roof has gutters.

  • Place the materials out on the floor

As you dont want to skip any steps, its better that you lay down all of your items before you proceed with the installation. Roll out the roofing sheets so that they lay flat on the ground. Use some bricks in the corner for keeping it in place the trick is also going to reduce the resistance later on.

If you decide to install the roll roofing in the winter, you should roll the roofing sheets in the garage as the cold temperatures may damage the roofing sheets.

You should cut pieces into 12-18 ft sections, laying them out flat in the backyard. Leave them in the sun for a day or so. When the temperatures go below 45 F degrees, you should store the roofing inside.

How To Fit Roof Shingles

Whether youre replacing your shed roof covering, or building an extension, roof shingles are a high-quality, cost-effective roofing material. Boasting a timeless and stylish appearance alongside uncompromising strength and reliability, shingles are a DIYers best friend. This is doubly true thanks to their lightweight construction and simple installation, making shingles a fantastic alternative to other, heavier, materials.

While installation may vary from brand to brand, the typical process remains very simple and, depending on the size of your project, can be completed in as little as a day. In this guide well go through the preparations you need to take as well as step-by-step instructions for one of the most popular shingles around, the Coroshingle.

Fold Flashing Over The Peak

Cut the flashing back to the peak along each crease. Then fold the flashing over the peak and cover the cut ends with self-stick underlayment. Roof valleys channel a lot of water, so they need extra protection. Start by installing self-stick underlayment on the decking. This process is much easier with two people. Cut the underlayment to size , and peel off the entire plastic backer. With a person on each end, fold the underlayment in on itself, sticky side out. Then lay it into the valley and unfold it. Try to push it down into the crease of the valley as tightly as possible. If this self-stick ice-and- water underlayment bridges both sides of the decking, leaving a gap underneath, it could tear once you install the metal valley flashing. Run the underlayment past the drip edge at the eaves, and trim off the extra with a utility knife. Once it’s smooth, nail it down on the outside edges.

Finish installing felt paper on the rest of the roof, overlapping the self-stick underlayment. Be careful when you trim back the felt paper so you don’t slice into the underlayment. Photo 7 shows the underlayment covering the felt on one edge a couple of inches. This will keep water farther away from the inside corner of the fascia. You can extend the center out even more but not so far that water overshoots your gutters if you have them.

Why Use Starter Shingles

Starter shingles are shingles that have no tabs. They are used to form a starter row with a continuous line of sealant. The sealant forms a better bond and seal between the first row of shingles and the starter strip.

It provides a strong waterproof and wind seal at the roof edges. A bundle of 16 starter shingles will do 105-feet of lineal edge.

Installing shingles on a lean to shed roof is a relatively simple project that the average homeowner can tackle. Additionally, shingles are a very cost-effective shed roof option that be installed in a few hours.

To install asphalt shingles on a lean to shed roof, start by installing tar paper on the plywood shed roof decking. Next, install the drip edge along the perimeter of the shed roof. Install the drip edge below the tar paper on the Eave side of the shed and above the tar paper on the Rake of the shed. Next, Install the starter strip of shingles along the bottom of the shed roof. After Installing the starter strip, install the first row of shingles, attaching them to the plywood roof decking with a roofing nailer. Install 4 nails per shingle or 6 nails if you live in a high wind area. Continue to install each row of shingles until you reach the top of the of the shed roof. Cut The Overhanging Shingle Ends

The seventh step is to cut the shingle ends off after the first 6 rows are installed.

On this project we got ahead of ourselves and forgot to cut the shingles after the first six rows.. But the process is the same.

You will use the straight edge of a spare shingle to line up your cut. Flip a shingle over and line the straight edge up with the 3/8″ overhang of the lower shingle. On the top end you will hold the straight edge 3/8″ off the drip edge.

Use your utility knife to cut along the straight edge of the shingle. It sometimes takes several passes with the knife to cut all the way through.

Now, clean the cut edges of the shingles by using a scrap piece of asphalt roofing to burnish the cut edge of the shingles that are installed on the roof.

Final: Double Check Your Work

After you complete the installation you should keep a close eye on your home over the next few months. Look for signs of roof leakage in the roof, and look for any sections of the roof that seem to be flapping or blowing up more than they should be. A single mistake can leave a section of shingles ripping off and allow water right into your home. As long as you keep a close eye on your house you should be able to spot possible mistakes and problems before they become major issues on your home.

Installing a shingle roof is a project that a homeowner can complete on his or her own, but it is not an easy project. It is something that you have to take the time to understand and evaluate before doing. If you are not confident in your abilities, it is much better to leave the task up to a professional instead of attempting the project and making a mistake. You should now have learned enough information to thoroughly know how to install roof shingles. However, feel free to get quotes from local roofing contractors above if you want to find out about roof installation costs in your area.

Install Waterproofing Membrane At Eves Valleys And Where Damming Occurs

Waterproofing membrane is a very thick material that forms a waterproof barrier in areas that are prone to leak. It is typically required along the eves of sheds that are heated to better protect the edges from ice damming. It comes in several forms and is either sticky back or non sticky back. I prefer the bituminous sticky back membrane because it stays where it is put and sticks to itself when it is layered for larger areas, it also does not need fasteners to install it which is good because you are not putting holes in the membrane that is protecting the most leak prone areas of the roof. Install the membrane in valleys by running the 36 wide material straight up the valley. Install it in damming areas like where a wall and valleys that are close to each other or in roof pitch transitions.

If you use a non sticky back membrane and have valleys on your shed, make sure to step on the center line of the valley to get it fully in contact with the wood valley and then attach the outer edges with fasteners about an inch from the edges.

Most sheds have a basic roof style. They are typically flat with a few slopes, and then they end in an overhang.

This type of roof is called shingled or shed style roof because it resembles the look of a traditional thatched roof minus the straw.

Its not uncommon to see this type of roof on small buildings such as sheds and boathouses due to its simplicity and low cost.

Install The Corner Piece

On many gable dormers, the roof of the dormer will touch the roof face at the top. If yours does, the roofer will need to create or buy an enclosed piece of flashing and tuck it into the corner. This protects the dormer wall and the underside of the dormer edge from water.

First, your roofers will lay the final shingle beneath the dormer and place the corner piece on top, and back into the corner. It should fit the corner perfectly.

Cut The First Piece Of Step Flashing

Dormers also need step flashing. This technique involves layering flashing with shingles as the roofers move up the wall. This method creates steps that guide water down the roof safely. Step flashing needs to extend 8 to 14 inches up the wall above the shingles, so the roofers must choose or cut tall pieces.

The first piece of step flashing is unique. It must bend back across the base of the dormer, overlapping with the base flashing. To create this piece of flashing, roofers will take your typical piece of step flashing and cut it into shape. In one technique, their first cut is made straight across the bend and up a few inches.

Then they place their second cut at a 45-degree angle to the first. Roofers will then cut from the end of their first cut back towards themselves. For neatness, roofers may choose to make a third cut to remove some of the excess flashing. Now the roofers must place your corner piece against the dormer and bend it into shape.
