Rv Roof Bubbles Or Wrinkles: Are They Serious

RV Roof Repair 101 “How to” Fix a Leak
  • Cut a slit in the bubble.
  • Check for water-damaged wood underneath the bubble just in case. If necessary, replace any damaged wood.
  • Spread RV roof adhesive on the wood and press the membrane back into place.
  • Patch and seal the slit you made in the roof membrane to reseal it.
  • Check your edges and seals for any cracks or holes, just in case air was able to get in beneath the bubble this way. Apply sealant wherever necessary.

Fix Plumbing Vent Boots

Plumbing vent boots can be all plastic, plastic and metal, or even two-piece metal units. Check plastic bases for cracks and metal bases for broken seams. Then examine the rubber boot surrounding the pipe. That can be rotted away or torn, allowing water to work its way into the house along the pipe. With any of these problems, you should buy a new vent boot to replace the old one. But if the nails at the base are missing or pulled free and the boot is in good shape, replace them with the rubber-washered screws used for metal roofing systems. You’ll find them at any home center with the rest of the screws. You’ll have to work neighboring shingles free on both sides. If you don’t have extra shingles, be careful when you remove shingles so they can be reused. Use a flat bar to separate the sealant between the layers. Then you’ll be able to drive the flat bar under the nail heads to pop out the nails.

How To Fix A Small Leak In Your Rvs Roof

YouTube user mrbigtex wanted to patch some leaks on an old vintage trailer thats used only at a deer camping site. He used some thin-gauge aluminum and elastic roof patching goop to fix the trouble spots.

While you might not want to use the same materials and techniques on a six-figure motorhome or aluminum-paneled Airstream, this cheap fix works great for older RVs in so-so condition.

Liquid Rubber Rv Roofing

Liquid rubber RV roofing goes on just like paint. However, once it dries it ends up hardening into a rubber membrane.

This paint on rubber roofing material usually comes in either white or black but you can paint over top of it.

The benefit of applying this type of roofing is that you do not have to take as many steps to apply it as you do to apply the roll-on types of rubber roofing and you can control how thick it will end up being.

You can also apply it over top of most other types of roofs so you wont need to tear off your old roof to apply the new liquid coating.

The other two types of rubber RV roofs are EPDM roofs and TPO roofs. Lets take a further look at each of these types of rubber RV roofs below.

High Risk Rv Roof Leak

Ep. 3

The front and rear corners are another high-risk leak point. Depending on your roof design, water gets trapped in the corners and will seep into your roof. Caulking was designed to repel water, but it doesnt do a good job when it is under water. If you look at your roof and see dirty build up in small depressions, and any of those are around caulk, it is at a high risk leak point. Some roof designs have a rectangle of metal trim that will hold water on the roof and cause the same type leaks. This is why it is important to walk and check your roof, youll know when it gets spongy or soft and you will be able to complete an rv roof repair without costly structural repairs.

What Is The Best Rv Roof Sealant

The best sealant to use depends on the roof surface and the application. For EPDM, TPO and aluminum roofs, the recommended material is M-1 sealant .

If youre sealing around a roof vent or skylight, industry experts recommend using SB-140 butyl caulking .

For resealing RV windows, the experts again suggest M-1 sealant, but Duralink is also used and has excellent adhesion to glass.

If you are sealing around irregular surfaces, the best sealant to use is WebSeal tape.

It has a unique, woven fabric backing with microsealant composition so that it bonds perfectly on flat surfaces as well as around curves, angles, bolts and pipes.

Its also highly weather resistant, and remains flexible even in climates with temperatures as low as negative 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

What Are Some Preventative Measures You Can Take To Help Avoid Leaks In Your Rv Roof

There are a few preventative measures you can take to help avoid leaks in your RV roof. The most important is to keep your roof clean and free of debris. Make sure the sealant around your roof vents and other openings is in good condition and properly applied. If you have a skylight, check the seal around it and replace it if needed. If you have a rubber roof, make sure to check the condition of the roof and replace any worn or damaged sections.

Thoroughly Dry The Rv

Next, you need to dry out the RV. If you live in a sunny and dry climate, you can open up the doors and windows of your RV and expose it to sunlight. Using a dehumidifier and heaters can also help speed up the process.

Wipe down damp surfaces with clean towels. You can also empty out the water holding tanks just to remove any remaining moisture in the vehicle. Some RV roof leak repair solutions just dont work if the surrounding material is wet, so you need to prepare the surface as well as you can.

Now that weve discussed how to fix the RV roof, we also need to know in the first place how they get started. Is the recreational vehicles roof that weak? It only takes a couple of years of sun exposure to weakening the RV roof.

Chapter : How To Search For The Source From The Outside

You are most likely to find the source of your leak while working on the roof, but again, be safe while working at such heights. It is imperative now, on the roof, more than ever to be attentive to detail. You will be looking for any inconsistencies along the surface of the roof.

You want the roof to be dry, so make sure to wait as long as you need to after rainfall before you start work. As a starting point, use the length that you measured while inside the house to locate the general area of the leak.

Examine the area for any moisture, since the roof should be dry, this will help identify where there is water backing up and seeping through to the inside. If you run into any nails that have rusted, you have found your source. Rust is a tremendous identifier for roof leaks, so always keep an eye out for any sign of rust.

If you have still not found the source of your leak, chapter 5 is the chapter for you.

How To Prevent Leaks

Every RV owner should have some basic RV roof leak repair knowledge, but its best if you never need to use this. Prevention is the best strategy because water damage can be difficult to fix.

There are a few things you can do that will help you identify leaks before they become a problem.

  • Perform regular inspections: Try to check the inside and outside of your RV for leaks before and after every long trip you take. At least do it before putting the RV into storage because water that sits for a long time can cause rot.
  • Check caulking and sealant: The main problem areas are around your windows, doors, vents, skylights, etc. Make sure the caulk around the seams is strong and uncracked. Dont be afraid to apply a little extra if it seems like its getting a little old/weak.
  • Cover the RV with a weather-proof tarp: One of the best ways to prevent leaks is to keep your RV covered whenever its not in use. This can prevent all sorts of problems like UV damage, black streaks, and roof leaks!
  • Keep it as dry as possible: Dont park your RV in a place where it will be exposed to frequent water. Try to use a carport or gargage if possible at least try to stay away from overhangs or trees that could frequently drip onto the roof.

Does Flex Seal Work As Well As Dicor Lap Sealant

Dicor Lap Sealant is another often recommended option to repair RV roof leaks. Dicor Lap Sealant is a self-leveling compound which is applied in a bead that will then spread and seal the leak. By most accounts, Dicor Lap Sealant works well and is an excellent product. The drawbacks are that Dicor Lap Sealant requires careful prep work and the proper temperature conditions to level and seal properly. This prep work and ideal temperature condition may not always be possible or available during an emergency repair while touring the Alaskan wilderness or a desert in the Southwest.

You can find various opinions on both Flex Seal and Dicor Lap Sealant as to these products performance and reliability. When you have the time and right tools to properly prepare the leaking area for repair and the right temperature to allow Dicor Lap Sealant to level and seal the leak, it is indeed the better product. However, when you are pulled off on the shoulder of the Trans-Canada Highway with a leaky RV roof, and the storm clouds are brewing, having a few cans of Flex Seal Spray in one of your storage compartments might be just the thing you need.

How To Repair Aluminum Rv Roof

Have a metal roof on your RV? Heres how to seal and repair their punctures.

Resealing aluminum RV roofs

For aluminum and other metal RV roofs, resealing is done with a special coating designed for the material, such as Dicors Metal RV roof coating. This forms a rubber-like top layer and is resistant to mildew and rust.

Of course, you wouldnt apply a thick white coating to a rounded metal RV like an Airstream. For these , sealing joints and rivets with a caulking gun is essential.

Repairing punctures or tears

Depending on the size of the puncture, you may be able to repair your metal roof with a peel and stick patch. Make sure to buy one that is designed for metal roofs, as the adhesive formula is a little different. Simply clean the area, stick the patch over it, and roll out air bubbles with a small roller.

For more significant damages, the best way to repair a metal roof is by replacing the metal panel, which is a process that will vary depending on your particular RV.

Repair Rv Roof Damage Asap

As soon as you notice leaks or other damage in the roof or its fixtures, repair them.

Its better to spend a few hundred dollars on a repair job now, than to have to pay nearly $10,000 to replace the whole roof.

Additionally, damage thats allowed to sit unaddressed can get worse, and lead to more issues or more extensive and expensive repairs.

The same goes for your rooftop systems, like the air conditioning unit. If it stops working, moisture can build up in the system and may strain the seal between the unit and the roof, or cause mold and mildew to develop.

Types Of Rubber Roofs

Rubber RV roofs have become increasingly popular.

These types of roofs are relatively light-weight and they age very well. Theyre also easy to apply to existing roof structures so many people will apply them right over top of their existing leaky roof.

This being said, there are more advanced liquid rubber roof products that you can buy to apply to your roof.

Fix The Leak In A Metal Roof

  • Once you find the leak, youll need to clean the area. Remove any loose sealant, caulk, dirt, paint or whatever else you find. To eliminate stubborn materials, use a putty knife or a metal brush. Its a good idea to burnish it with a brass brush on a drill.

  • Use soap and water to get the area as clean as possible. Let it dry completely before doing anything else to it. A full day of drying is a good idea. Make sure to check your local weather forecast before starting this part of the project.

  • At this point youll want to use a sealant. The terms sealant and caulk are often used interchangeably. However, there are differences. “Sealants are designed to seal an interface that is subject to movement,” according to Best Materials.com. “Caulks are designed to fill a gap. Sealants are designed to create a long-term seal that stays intact and prevents moisture ingress and UV resistant. Sealants deal with greater joint movement, extreme temperatures and have very low shrinkage.

  • Cut the width of the sealant tube opening so that it is about the size of the seam. Often this means that youll need to cut the tube near the top. Have a roll of paper towels ready. Get as much sealant into the seam and onto and into the screw holes as possible. Use the paper towels to remove any excess sealant.
