Metal roofing can be seen almost anywhere. Covering bus stops in the city, covering barns in the countryside, or covering undercover play areas. Metal roofs are often used in these cases because of their longevity, easy maintenance, and simple aesthetic.
During the last two decades, however, metal roofing has been growing in popularity for residential homes. The industrial-looking corrugated roof or simple standing seam metal roofing has been replaced by metal roofing systems made to look like slate, cedar shingles, and more. While its gaining in popularity, finding an experienced professional to install this type of roof can be a challenge.

Comply With Local Building Codes
It’s a good idea to verify that installing metal over shingles is in accordance with the local building code by making calls to your local zoning and building departments. In rare cases, there may be ordinances that prevent this method or require special handling during install.
A standard regulation will be on the number of shingle layers. One layer is typically okay, but there are some states with restrictions on two or more layers. This rule is due to the weight limit of house trusses, which varies by home. When there are multiple layers of shingles, the trusses can have too much weight, putting the homeowners at risk of the tresses falling, damaging the roof.
Ridge Vents Are More Obvious
On most homes today, attic venting is provided by a continuous ridge vent that runs across the peak of the roof. On a shingled roof, this continuous ridge vent is a strip of shingle-like material that runs the entire length of the peak of the house, masking outflow holes on the sides of the ridge. You likely have seen this countless times, but probably never really noticed because the CRV usually lies very flat and blends in perfectly with the surrounding roof.
On many metal roofs, especially standing-seam roofs, the CRV is also metal, and it stands out further and is thus much more noticeable. These thick, prominent lines or ridges are inherent in metal roofs and add to their distinctive look.

Considerations When Installing Standing Seam Metal Over Shingles
|Installing a new metal roof over an existing shingle roof is a quick way to get a new roof on a building without the cost and hassle of a shingle tear-off, and it is pretty common in this industry. However, the practice can create some problems, especially if certain considerations arent taken into account. Today on the Metal Roofing Channel, Sheffield Metals Technical Director, Jeff Hock, is working with Thad to demonstrate some different types of metal over shingle assemblies, discuss issues that come up during the install, and offer solutions for when they happen. Sheffield Metals always recommends removing the existing shingles so you can properly inspect, repair, and level the roof deck before installing a brand new roof. However, if you decide to roof directly over shingles, these tips should help you get the most out of your project.|
Metal Roofing Does Not Attract Lightning
You might think that a metal roof will attract lightning, but this is not borne out by facts or statistics. According to a technical bulletin from the Metal Construction Association, “Metal roofing does not in any way increase the risk of a lightning strike.” Not only that but also if metal roofing does happen to get struck by lightning, it is less combustible than conventional roofing materials such as wood shakes or shingles.
As the bulletin asserts, “Because metal roofing is both an electrical conductor and a noncombustible material, the risks associated with its use and behavior during a lightning event make it the most desirable construction available.”
The reason that metal roofs do not attract lighting is simple: lighting seeks a path to ground, which is why trees, telephone poles, and other such structures tend to attract lightning. Metal roofs are isolated structural components, with no direct path to ground inherent in their design. Hence, there is no scientific reason for lighting to strike a metal roof any more often than it strikes an asphalt shingle roof.

Ensure Your Shingle Roof Is In Good Shape
Almost every building department will comply with this installation process but may have a few caveats in terms of safety. Generally, they will check to ensure that the plywood of the existing shingle roof is in good shape and does not contain any soft spots.
This isnt just to make your life harder. A metal roof is installed with screws that need something to hold onto. Soft or unreliable plywood wont be able to hold the screws and thus your roof could come off during one of Northern Floridas famous afternoon thunderstorms. Lets not even get started on hurricane season.
Metal Roofing Is Impervious To Fire Rot And Insect Damage
One of the principal reasons metal roofing has exploded in popularity is that it is virtually fireproof. With the dangers of wildfire on the rise, metal roofing has become the roofing material of choice in many parts of the country. And not only that:
- Insects such as termites can never eat metal roofing.
- Metal roofing is impervious to rot and mildew.
- Since it conducts heat quickly from the sun, snow slides off more quickly than with conventional roofing.

Roof Leaks Will Be More Difficult To Detect In The Future
When you cover the asphalt roof with a metal roof, you are merely masking the problem. Water will run down and across your old asphalt shingle roof.
The water will continue to flow until it reaches the source of the problem and begins to leak into your home. These leaks will be difficult to monitor and locate because they originate from two separate regions of two different roofs.
Do I Need Underlayment For Metal Roof Over Shingles
A metal roof over shingles may need to be adhered to the shingles. Installing metal roofing over shingles without laying them down is a plus, but laying them down is also a plus. It is this extra layer that prevents the previous shingles from becoming stressed, increasing the likelihood of roof damage.
With metal roof underlayment, an additional layer of protection from the elements is provided by a water-resistant barrier. Underlayment acts as a heat conductor for a metal roof, decreasing heat gain during hot weather and cold winter months. It not only blocks some of the noise caused by rain and other elements hitting the roof, but it also prevents sound from entering the house. Underlayment is required by some building codes for metal roofs. The lay-over of roofing material underlayment makes it easier to lay roofing material over the bare surface of your roof, giving it a uniform appearance. If a blowoff or water penetration occurs through the roof covering or flashings, an underlayer protects the inside of the home from direct sunlight. Choosing the right underlayment for your roof can be difficult.
Underlayment is one of the most important components of metal roofing systems. The water damage protection system has a significant impact on its longevity and provides additional safeguards against water intrusion. You can select from a number of different underlayment options.

Hire A Roof Inspector First
Its crucial to have your roof inspected by a professional before you consider installing metal roof over shingles. Unless you purchased your home, you might not know whether or not there are already multiple layers of existing shingles.
A roofer will be much better at spotting the signs of leaking shingles, rot, or structural damage. If your current roof is in bad shape, its better to tear it away and start new. Theyll also be more familiar with local code requirements that may prevent you from installing a metal roofing system over your existing shingles. A roofing contractor will generally offer free estimates, and they will inspect your shingled roof in the process.
Even the handiest of homeowners shouldnt rely on their own skills to install a residential roofing system made from metal. If you install your metal roof over a leaky or buckling roof, it will lead to an expensive repair job. A professional can prevent you from making costly or dangerous mistakes.
Metal roofing is much more difficult to install than a variety of asphalt roof shingle styles. If you dont know how to cut metal roofing panels, you can warp them or damage the protective coating that prevents rust. You will also need to invest in some specialty tools to help you get the job done.
The Decking Of Your Roof
Another thing to consider is the decking of your roof. The decking is the structure that supports the roofing material. Therefore, If you install a metal roof over an asphalt roof, you won’t be able to inspect the decking and, if your contractor is unable to test the integrity of your decking or examine for rotten boards, it may result in a costly problem down the line.

Advantages Of Metal Roofing
In addition to potential cost benefits, metal roofing offers other advantages, including:
- Long lifespans: A well-installed metal roof can last four to five decades without the need for replacement.
- Durability: Metal roofs can withstand very intense weather events, including everything from ice storms and searing summer heat to pounding hail and gale-force winds.
- Low maintenance: Properly installed metal roofs dont usually require routine maintenance or expensive repair jobs.
- Reduced cooling bills: Because they have special coatings that allow them to reflect heat, metal roofs promote cooler interior temperatures so you dont have to use your AC system as much.
Why Should You Not Remove The Shingles
- Leaving the shingles can result in a lower installation price, the contractor will not have to bill for the removal and disposal of the shingles.
- It is eco-friendly. You will not be adding shingles to the overflowing landfills.
- The shingles will act as an extra layer of protection. The shingles add another barrier between water and the decking.

Metal Roof Panels Over Shinglescheck Your Roof Decking
To begin, a contractor will analyze the condition of your roof decking before installing a Metal Roof Panels system over shingles. We encourage customers to think about the current age of your roof. Remember, Metal Roof Panels systems will not need replacing for 40+ years. If your roof is already 15 years old, there may be some underlying damage to the decking. These previous issues to the decking will not allow the Metal Roof Panels system to last to its full potential. If the entire roof decking is in good conditionyou will not have to worry about taking off shingles. Parts of the roof decking can be replaced if needed. However, you will have to peel back the shingles in that spot to do so. If you want to follow through with this method of installation, a contractor will give your roof a professional inspection. From there, they will determine if it is possible.
