What Is The Tesla Solar Roof

One of the biggest issues homeowners have with solar panels is how they look. As a response, in 2016, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced Tesla Energys new product – the Tesla Solar Roof – on the set of then-popular television series Desperate Housewives of all places .

The Solar Roof was designed to function like photovoltaic solar panels while seamlessly integrating into a roof. This way, homeowners could still enjoy the benefits of solar energy, like electric bill savings and using clean energy, without having to sacrifice their homes aesthetics.

In order to get a uniform look, a homes entire roof is replaced with Tesla shingles. Not all of these shingles will generate electricity , but the whole roof will be covered in Tesla brand shingles. Tesla Solar Roofs generally include three pieces of equipment: active solar shingles, inactive shingles, and a Tesla solar inverter.

Tesla Solar Roof Equipment Price Breakdown

For an average home, the Tesla Solar Roof will cost between $40,000 to $50,000, assuming a 6.14 kW system. And while the Tesla Solar Roof shingles cost less per watt than the national average solar cost, several other factors can increase the cost beyond a traditional system. However, homeowners should keep in mind that they will also have a completely new roof, not just a solar energy system. Additionally, residents purchasing a new solar system will qualify for the Federal Solar Tax Credit and other rebates . These rebates and incentives help make the Solar Roof more affordable.

Secure The Solar Panels On Your Rv Roof

  • Flexible panels can be mounted with adhesive only, while rigid panels come in mounting brackets that must be screwed onto the studs on your roof.
  • Attach the panels to the frame or mounting brackets and mark where you need to drill holes. Note that flexible panels can be mounted with adhesive only, while rigid panels come in mounting brackets that must be screwed onto the studs on your roof. The studs are usually visible with a 2 to 3 inches wide gray line going width wise on your roof.
  • Drill small pilot holes and fill them with sealant to create a water-tight seal. Check with your RV manufacturer which type of adhesive is required for your specific roof membrane material.

  • For extra weatherproofing capability, you can apply a generous coat of protective sealant on top and around the mounting brackets to seal everything off.

Step 2: Connect The Solar Panels Together

Step 3: Run The Wirings From The Roof To Inside The RV

There are a few ways to run the power cable from the solar panels on the roof into the RV to where the charge controller is:

Step 4: Connect The Charge Controlled

Whats New With The Tesla Solar Roof In 2021

At the end of October 2019, Tesla launched the Solar Roof V3, the latest iteration of the solar roof tiles. Unlike its predecessors, the new Tesla solar roof product comes in one style and consists of fewer parts.

Elon Musk was confident that the rollout of the new solar tiles would be the best version yet. The company planned to ramp up production at their Gigafactory in Buffalo, New York, and partner with local installers to help deploy more solar roofs than they had in the past.

A little over a year later, Musk wound up eating his words, admitting that the company had made significant mistakes with their solar roof project in Teslas Q1 2021 call.

Things started to turn sour for the solar roof in March 2021, when Tesla updated its solar roof pricing, making it even more expensive than before. They kept the cost per watt of solar the same, but the cost of the inactive tiles went up and now varied based on the complexity of a homeowners roof.

Then, just a month later, Tesla increased solar roof prices yet again. The real kicker is that Tesla didnt just up their pricing for new solar roof orders: people who already signed contracts with Tesla saw their installation prices increase, as well.

In some cases, the new prices were 30% higher than the prices in their original contract! And the contract pricing issue wasnt remedied until September 2021, a whole five months later, and only after a class action lawsuit was filed against the company.

The goal, however, is to expand across the country with both the companyâs internal teams and third parties.

At the time of writing, Teslaâs website accepts orders for its retrofit solar panels in 24 locations: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusets, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.

The Tesla Solar Roof comes with its own backup protection in the form of the Tesla Powerwall. The Powerwall is a home battery that comes with every Tesla Solar Roof purchase.

The Powerwall stores the energy you produce with your Solar Roof. As your Solar Roof generates energy throughout the day, that energy gets used by your home or stored in the Powerwall. Then, when your home needs to use power at night or during a power outage, it relies on the Powerwall.
