Tips For Applying Elastomeric Roof Coating

How To Apply Dicor EPDM Rubber Roofing Coating System On Your RV/Camper

Keeping the previous steps in mind, these are some helpful tips to make the application process go smoothly:

  • If possible, apply the elastomeric roof coating on a sunny day.
  • Pick a day that is nice but not too hot.
  • When using a roller, use a brush for finer details and around roof fixtures.
  • If the roof is severely damaged, hire a professional to patch it first.

Lastly, be sure to stay off the roof until the elastomeric roof coating is cured. It should dry within a day or so. However, it may take up to a week to be fully cured in perfect weather. If it rains a few days after the elastomeric paint for roof is applied, the moisture will not ruin it. Continuously wet weather could slow the curing process for up to a few weeks. To be safe, plan on staying off the roof for a month.

Thoroughly Clean The Surface

The first, and perhaps most important step, in the elastomeric roof coating application process is to ensure that the surface you plan to apply the coating to is thoroughly cleaned and clear of any dirt, debris, gravel, sticks, or any other obstructions before you do anything else.

If you apply your roof coating onto a dirty or unclear surface, any and all debris will be coated in the and your coating may not adhere to the surface properly due to the obstructions. This will ultimately inhibit the protective qualities the coating would normally offer and may leave vulnerable areas uncovered.

The best way to get your roof ready for elastomeric coating is to remove large debris by hand or with a pushbroom or blower. Then use a pressure washer to clear away leftover dirt and grime on the surface. If you do use a pressure washer, make sure you allow your roof to dry completely before continuing. This should take a few hours.

What Is Elastomeric Coating

If you are going to be putting something on your roof, it is probably a good idea to know exactly what you are working with, right? Elastomeric coatings are liquids used in a variety of different exterior applications such as concrete, stucco, and masonry walls to add a layer of protection against wear and tear, as well as helping the surface preserve its attractive appearance.

These liquids have a greater volume and thickness than standard paint coatings but are applied in the exact same way. No need for special equipment or processes. This greater volume gives elastomeric coatings far superior water-resistant properties as well as greater durability and flexibility than paint.

    Understanding Liquid Rubber Coatings

These are more affordable and easy-to-apply. If you plan to merely alter the appearance of your roof and render it some weather-bearing qualities without undertaking roof replacement liquid rubber coatings are suggested. They are often retailed as a roof-resurfacing option. Since they are easy-to-apply, just like wall-paint, they are very popular among homeowners wanting a quick refurbishment of their roofs. The liquid roof coating binds immediately to the roofing base. It is sold in a wide range of colors and can be applied with household tools like a paint-roller or a paintbrush.

Further, there are minimal technical issues with such coatings. The number of coatings can be increased or restricted, to keep pace with your budgetary considerations. Liquid rubber induces negligible chemical reactions when applied to concrete or metal roofing materials. There is no need to use a primer material or preparing the coating surface. This makes the entire process quicker. Liquid rubber roof coatings are known to last for two-to-three decades.

We are going to cover in the following blog the major steps to applying an elastomeric roof coating on your roof for the best results. Apply Polyester Membrane And Patching Compound

Tietex polyester membranes are 100% polyester, stitch-bonded fabrics that do not rely on adhesives. These membranes are very strong and help to reinforce roof membranes while providing water protection. The Tietex polyester membranes come in rolls, and you should place them over large cracks, joints, and seams along the roof.

Fill in any large cracks using Elasto White Patching Compound, which can fill voids and cracks to prevent water ponding. For additional strength, use the Elasto White Patching Compound with added polyester. Remember that the patching compound will need to dry completely before you move forward with the roof coating process.
