Before starting the project you will need to measure the exact shape of the roof that you are about to cover. The required lengths of the common rafters can be determined only when the span of the shed has been measured.
Use a measuring tape and figure out the dimensions of your roof. In case theres a wall which can be used for constructing the awning, then you need to make sure that it can bear the load.
The length of the rafters which you are going to use for the project is derived by taking the total span of the shed and then deducting the thickness of one wall from that number.

What Products Do I Need To Build A Slanted Roof Shed
Building materials depend on the desired shed roof plans. You will need timber to build a slanted roof. You will be using two by fours and two by sixes for the rafters of your roof.
You have to make sure that they are not warped and are straight enough to support the weight of the roof when it’s done.
Scrap wood is ideal to use for the gussets in between your trusses. Gussets prevent the wood from splitting when it comes under any kind of stress. After joining the trusses with the rafters and joists you need to put the roof sheathing on the structure.
The fascia rafters i.e. the horizontal rafter of the outer edge of the overhang has fascia boards that hold guttering and the last row of shingles of a pitched roof.
You will also need metal brackets for the joints between the trusses, galvanised nails, screws, and possibly an underlay for putting down before you put your shingles over it.

Once I decided on the site for my shed, I cleared the area of ground cover. I added 2 on each side of the shed perimeter and hammered in wooden stakes at the corners to give me the area I needed. I removed any sod and the top layer of soil, and then slightly compacted the site to pack down any loose soil.

In addition to decoration, pergolas can provide several functions, providing shade, defining a space, and providing a structure for vines and vertical growing plants. Grapes and ivy, for example, grow well on pergolas. The foliage also provides extra shade. A standard pergola has no angles, but some outdoor spaces might work better with an angled pergola. A salt box-style house is one example of a place an angled pergola would look best.
Cut the top ends off two of the 4-by-4-by-96-inch posts at a 14-degree angle, using a miter saw. These are the front corner posts of the angled pergola. Cut the top ends off two of the 4-by-4-by-72-inch posts at a 14-degree angle, using a miter saw. These are the back corner posts. Measure up 36 inches from the bottom of the front and back corner posts. Mark this measurement with a pencil.

Which Is The Easiest Shed Roof Pitch To Build
In my view it has to be the flat roof with a nominal slope. My reasoning for this is that all that is required is a simple beam.
There is no fabrication of roof trusses required. The roof joists can be fixed spanning directly between wall plates. I always recommend at least a minimum pitch of 1 in 40. This translates into a fall of just under 2.5″ on an 8 foot roof.

Pulling It All Together
In summary, traditionally a roof pitch was determined by the climate and the available materials to achieve a dry building.
As housing density has progressed and planning rules introduced many sheds have shallower roof pitches due to zoning and planning requirements.
Your shed roof pitch may also be influenced by your project specific requirements to let light into the building through the roof or create storage space in the roof void.
Whichever roof pitch you choose make sure that you select a roof covering that is designed to be waterproof at the angle that you eventually select.

Check Local Law Restriction
My first step was to look up the local building regulations for some answers:
- What is the greatest size shed I can build without, and with, a permit?
- Are there any restrictions on building materials?
- Any setbacks?
- Is there a maximum height for a shed?
- Any requirements on door widths?
I then checked with the local utilities to ensure my shed wouldnt interfere with their services. To be safe, I also checked with my neighborhood association to see if they had any restrictions.
According to my town regulations, I could build a shed up to 10×14 without a building permit. I emailed the local building department to see how they measure the shed size by outside perimeter foundation footprint, or the roof projection.
They responded quickly and politely. They confirmed that I didnt need any permits and included other helpful information. The size of the shed would be calculated by the foundation footprint. Also, the maximum height of a shed, measured from ground level to the highest peak of the roof, is set at 14 and must never exceed the height of the house.
The regulations allowed a storage shed to be built in the side yard, backyard, or in the rear setback but never over the septic field. Included in their reply was also a list of approved materials for exterior siding which was useful.
Adding The Final Touches
Use the saw on the rafters that remain and then arrange them out properly, using nails to bind them together. If needed, you can also use fillers and block stiffeners. Use chalk to mark the boundaries of the overhangs as desired. The sliding T-bevel can be used for denoting the outer edge.
Take the fascia rafters and fascia board and put them into place on the opposite end. Experts advise using lookouts with ladder framing to go along with fascia rafters. Once the slant roof has been put in, finish the layout work and then nail the plywood into place. Then, you’re ready to add shingles.

Getting Started On How To Build A Pergola
Heres a summer project designed to keep you cooler on even the hottest of days. The classical columns support an overhead wooden lattice that works like a big shade tree, letting only a portion of the suns radiance shine through.
What looks like the toughest part of this pergola plans project is actually the easiestthe graceful, solid-looking columns. Theyre not wood at all but a hollow-core composite material with amazing structural strength and durability. Weve designed the pergola plans so you simply slip these columns over treated 4×4 posts embedded in concrete. When screwed to the wooden posts, these columns provide a stable, solid base for the overhead lattice framework.
These paintable precast columns are available by special order at home centers. They come in a wide variety of diameters and heights and architectural styles.
Pressure-treated dimensional 2x8s and 2x10s make up the majority of the upper framework, and the decorative end pieces are cut with a jigsaw from our pergola plans. The whole project can be built in a couple of weekends, with another weekend for staining and painting.
We built our pergola over an existing stone patio that saved a lot of patio work. If youre planning to install a patio as part of your overall project, youll need to allow extra time.

Install The Clear Corrugated Roof
Next, you will install the wood roof supports on top of the wood slats and then install the clear corrugated roof on top of these roof supports. As far as painting goes, you should at least paint the wood roof supports before installing them because once the roof is attached it will be very hard to paint, and impossible to paint the top .
Supplies:
- Corrugated roof panels we used 8x 26 wide panels at 12 lengths from Home Depot
- Horizontal plastic closure strips, packs of 6 we used 8 packs of 6 to cover our 4 roof supports at 16 long each support
- 2×2 wood roof supports we used 8x 8 lengths, but you could use 4x 16 lengths, or whatever length you need for your project to at least create 4 roof supports across the top
- 1.5 Decking screws

What Angle Slope Do I Need For A Shed Roof
The more slant you have on your shed roof, the higher your peak will be. Depending on how high you want your peak, is going to change what angle you need for your roof pitch. Most sheds in an urban setting are built at a 30-degree pitch because they are easier to make and still provide adequate rain runoff and extra space. It is usually easier to get higher pitches on your roof so that you are able to have more headroom.
