How To Craft A Temporary Patch For A Roof Leak On The Outside Of The Roof

You should be comfortable working at some height if youre going to repair a roof leak on your own, even if its temporary. If you have questions or dont want to climb up on your roof which is definitely understandable work with a roof contractor.

  • If youre ready to go and cover or patch your roof, then youll need a couple of two by fours and some heavy plastic polyethylene sheeting thats large enough to cover the leaking section of the roof from the eaves to the peak with a couple extra feet in case you need to wrap it around spots in order to tape it in place.
  • Wrap one end around a two by four thats longer than the width of the two by four and staple it place, and then add a second two by four next to it like a sandwich and staple the pair of boards together with 3 or 4 nails.
  • Do the same thing with the other end and another set of two by fours.
  • Place the pair of two by fours along the eaves of your roof, and stretch the plastic to the ridge or the peak and down the other side for a few feet to make sure you have enough coverage.
  • Then use other pair of sandwiched two by fours to weigh down the poly sheeting on the other side, but dont attach or nail any part of this temporary cover to the roof.
  • Depending on your homeowners insurance policy, you may be obligated to perform temporary repairs like this one to show that youve made an effort to prevent further issues until the costs of long-term repairs or replacement are covered.

    Dont have two by fours?

Chapter : How To Get To The Source Of The Damaging Leak

Its important to note that the source of the leak is not often in the same spot at the drip in your house. You should put out a bucket to catch the water as it falls off your ceiling, but now its time to think like the water.

Water abides by the law of gravity, so when you have a drip in your house, it is smart to look to higher points on your roof for the source. The water can bend and wrap around support beams, rafters, and sheathing so its not always simple to find from where it is originating.

Since water flows so freely along your ceiling it is important to stay concentrated when following the descriptive methods I illustrate in the next chapters.

Fixing A Roof Leak Around A Skylight

Leaking around a skylight, especially an older one, is very common. To fix the roof leak, you typically have to remove all the waterproofing and the layer of shingles over top of the edges of the skylight windows so that you can waterproof it properly.

Cut off the shingles, the flashing, and anything else that is covering up the skylight and the area 6 around the skylight. With the section cleared all the way down to the OSB decking, it is time to get started waterproofing your skylight.

    • Install an ice and water barrier up to the nailing flange of the skylight along the bottom, with the barrier going underneath the row of shingles just below, but over the next row of shingles down. This will allow water to run down the ice and water shield and back over top of the shingles once again.
    • Install the barrier along the sides. Make sure that it runs under the shingles and over top of the bottom row of the barrier.
    • Finally, run the top row of the barrier up to the flange so that it covers the sides and runs underneath the row of shingles up above. This creates an effective water barrier for the skylight.

    Fixing A Chimney Roof Leak

Chimneys are a common problem area for a water roof leak. Common sections of a chimney that lead to roof leaks are the cricket and the counter flashing.

The cricket is a small peaked section on the chimneys high side designed to divert water around it. The cricket should be sealed into the grout of the chimney itself firmly. If it has come off, reapply it using a waterproof roofing sealant.

There is also the counter flashing. This is installed at the sides and base of the chimney. Its the vertical portion of the flashing designed to keep water from running down and underneath the chimney. Counter flashing should also be sealed right into the mortar of the chimney. You can use roofing sealant or mortar to lock the flashing back in place if it slipped off.

How Does Infrared Roof Scanning Work

The science of infrared scanning and technology behind it can be complex to understand. Simply put, infrared scanning is the practice of using infrared equipment to measure the heat being emitted from the surface of an object. The patterns being emitted from the surface of an object are measured and captured by infrared cameras which form the data being collected into images. These images can then be analyzed by a trained professional to determine if there are areas which are anomalies. Anomalies may indicate areas that require further review.

Infrared scans are most often done during the early evening hours after the sun has begun to set. In order for an infrared scan to be completed, the roof surface must be dry as moisture interferes with the cameras ability to measure surface temperatures. It is also preferable that the surface of the roof system receive exposure to substantial sunlight to allow the surface of the roof system to heat up as much as possible. This heat absorption allows the moisture trapped in the roof system to increase in temperature and create a temperature difference that can be measured by the camera.
