How To Fix Water Leak In Car Roof

Common Causes For Roof Leaks In Heavy Rain

How to fix water leaks in your car roof.

Plumbing Many homes and commercial buildings have some sort of plumbing coming out of the roof, especially commercial buildings with flat roofs. When pipes are coming through the roof, the hole around the pipe will need to be properly patched and sealed or water may get in. Over the years, the sealant can deteriorate and allow small penetrable areas to form and cause leaks. Be sure to take a look at all plumbing on the roof to check for possible damaged areas.

Vents Your roof will usually have numerous vents to allow heat out of your house from the stove, bathrooms or attic ventilation systems. If the contractor that installed your roof didnt properly seal the edges around the vents or your vents get damaged or bent, there may be areas that can allow water into your home so it is very important to make sure your roof gets installed correctly in the first place or is maintained well to prevent any future leaks.

Water Ponding On flat and low sloped roofs, water ponding is a common issue and gets much worse when there are heavy rains coming down. When large amounts of water gather, it creates a wide surface area and will reach areas of the roof that it normally doesnt, prompting it to leak during these times. The seals and patched areas on flat roofs are very prone to leaks, so these areas should be the first place you check for issues.

How To Tell If Your Sunroof Is Leaking

There are common telltale signs that your sunroof is leaking. If the interior of your car smells musty or youve actually seen mold spores, this is a dead giveaway that there is too much moisture entering the vehicles cabin. Sometimes it is difficult to pinpoint where the moisture is coming from though and the sunroof isnt always the culprit. Water flows downhill, so it typically follows channels and ends up in a cars floorboards, making it hard to tell where it originally started. Other times, staining and wet spots make it obvious.

Moisture can wreak havoc on your cars interior. Not only can it cause uncomfortable wet spots, but mold issues also pose serious health concerns. On top of that, moisture can fry your cars electronics and even cause rust issues if left untreated. Any leak should be taken seriously and fixed as soon as possible.

If your car has a sunroof, it may be a prime suspect of a water leak. You may notice water dripping from directly around the sunroof area, staining in the headliner around the sunroof, or even water in the floor of the vehicle.

Other less common leaks can be caused by your vehicles:

Home Much Does It Cost To Fix A Sunroof

  • Sunroof Repair Cost: Sunroof replacement is estimated to cost roughly $500. Professional repair with labor will come between $300 and $1,000.

An extended auto warranty for your vehicle is a great way to cut down on such expensive costs. Putting warranty coverage on your vehicle before leaks occur will save you from spending money on repairs that can be caused by roof leaks such as electrical or mechanical malfunctions. Dont let water sneak into your vehicle to ruin the vehicles pricey components or your driving experience.

Is Shark Fin Antenna Waterproof

Shark fin antennas are the most popular vehicle antennas because of their small size and ability to boost AM/FM signals, satellite radio, and GPS of your car stereo.

Shark Fin Antennas come with large rubber bases that are adhesive to the cars roof.

Although there is still a need to drill the hole for the wires, shark fin antennas have a much more stable connection with the car roof, and there is a limited chance of water leaking into the vehicle.

Before buying any shark fin car antenna, make sure your new antenna size matches the older one.

My favorite is the Possbay Shark Fin antenna. It is a universal mount car antenna made from high-quality paint technology, it is easy to install, self-adhesive, and it has wire surrounded by rubber, making it waterproof.

Here are some of the great benefits of using shark fin antennas over other antennas:

Diagnosing A Leak In Your Car

How to Fix a Water Leak in a Concrete Foundation

Finding the water in your car isn’t hard It usually collects in the lowest spot, the foot wells! But diagnosing where it came from is notoriously hard.

We all know that water obeys the laws of gravity, so will always pool in the lowest area but it can run along wires, travel up cardboard and fabric surfaces, and generally do its best to disguise where it came from in the first place!

The first clue to help find the leak is WHEN it happens? Is it after a rain storm or car wash? Only when the car’s parked on a slope? Was it just after using the heat or defroster for the first time in a long time? Or maybe the AC? Identifying when can potentially narrow down where and why.

If it leaks even when it hasn’t rained or the car hasn’t been washed, then it’s coming from somewhere within the car itself. If it only happens when the car is parked on a slope, it’s probably a failed weatherstripping seal or blocked sunroof drain. Here’s a more detailed rundown…

How To Find A Roof Leak

Learning how to find a roof leak is easy but accomplishing the task can be frustrating. And fixing a leaky roof can be less time-consuming than locating where the water is coming in.

Water frequently enters the house near things that go through the roof. Projections or penetrations such as vents, dormers and chimneys are frequent places for leaks. Locating the exact source can be tricky because visible signs of a leak on the inside might be several feet away from either to the left, right or below the actual source.

To find the source of a roof leak:

  • Look in the attic with a flashlight for evidence like water stains, trhen trace them up the roof and rafters to the entry point.
  • If the leak isnt obvious, have a helper watch in the attic while you get on the roof with a garden hose.
  • Begin soaking low on the roof, just above where the leak is visible inside the house.
  • Use enough water to mimic heavy rains.
  • Run water over the low side of the penetration for several minutes while the helper watches for any water droplets.
  • If none appear, move to the right or left side of the penetration and let the water run over the area for several minutes before moving to the other side.
  • Work your way up the roof, isolating areas around each penetration until the helper yells that a drip is visible.
  • That will be the vicinity of the leak.

Time To Turn Detective

Dry out the inside then see if water re-appears when it rains

You know where the liquid is, what it is, and when it gets in. Now its time to work out how its gaining access. If it gets in after rain, its fair to assume youve got a leak somewhere. But do you park on the flat or on a slope? And if its on a slope, does the water end up in the same place whichever direction the car faces?

Think about where the water is gathering and whats above it. For example, if the water is in the passenger footwell and you dont see it after rain, it might be coming from the ventilation system. Then think about your car. Has it been resprayed or had repairs to any doors or windows recently, or possibly had a new windscreen put in? How old is the car and is it conceivable that the rubber seals around the doors and windows might have perished?

Replacing Broken Mast Of Electric Powered Self Extending Antenna

How to fix a water leaking on roof side panel of a car

If you hear the motor running when you start the car, but the mast is broken or does not go up or down, you can repair the antenna by replacing the mast. But because new antennas are not too expensive, I would rather replace the whole unit.

If however, you still want to replace the broken mast in the antenna, the steps below will drive you through this process:

  • Take a nose plier and remove the mast retaining nut by rotating it counterclockwise.
  • Gently pull up the antenna and remove it. You will notice a nylon wire comes along with the antenna.
  • Now take the wire and insert it into the antenna driver assembly.
  • Ask another person to turn off the ignition, and the antenna motor will start drawing the mast and wire back into the assembly.
  • Reinstall the retaining nut, and adjust the antenna to its final position.

However, if the car antenna motor is not working even after turning on the engine, it needs to be replaced with a new self-extending antenna.

What To Do Once Youve Found The Leak

There’s not much point in drying out the car until you identify and stop or at least lessen the leak. Once you do though, you really need to dry out the inside of the car thoroughly because a damp car will go moldy very quickly. Even if it looks clean, there could be mold in the carpet or doors, and you could find yourself driving a car that smells like a compost pile.

So once you’ve found and fixed the leak – if it’s wet and you can remove it, remove it. The seats, carpets and door panels are not particularly hard to remove and put in the sun to dry. Mop up as much liquid as you can with something very absorbent, like kitchen paper towels.

When you’ve got it as dry as you can, either use a plug-in dehumidifier or a plastic tub full of desiccant left in the car with all the windows closed for 24 hours. Some people also swear by leaving a tray of cat litter in the car too!

It may take time to dry the car completely, so whenever you drive the car have the heater on and windows opened slightly to aid ventilation.

How To Prevent Automotive Overhead Leaks

It seems there are a few preventive measures that you can follow in order to prevent the occurrence of leaks in your cars roof.

  • Rust is your number one enemy. The presence of rust and corrosion on the roof of your vehicle is the primary cause of roof leaks in aging cars. It is best to repair and repaint the area as soon as you discover bubbles, cracks, or chipped paint on the roof. Dont wait for the roof to actually leak water before you decide to take action.
  • Periodically wax and polish the paint finish of your ride, especially the roof area. Wax and polish will not only give your steed a showroom shine, but it will also protect the paint from rain, snow, and constant sun exposure.
  • Take extra precaution when installing accessories, especially if the installation process involves drilling and the use of mounting hardware. Installing a roof rack, sunroof, or auxiliary lights will give your vehicle more functionality and style. However, these accessories will need to be installed with the utmost care in order to prevent water leaks. Let the experts do their job, and dont forget to ask for a warranty against leaks.
  • Park your car in a shaded garage whenever possible. If you are in an open parking lot, stay away from parking directly underneath fruitbearing trees that may otherwise cause irreversible damage caused by falling debris .

Make Sure The Drains Are Clear:

Convertibles are designed with a sophisticated system to keepwater out of the car. A series of drains, flaps, and tubes are built into thecar to channel rainwater through the body of the vehicle to expel to theground.

If you open the roof enough, youll be able to see all the rubberseals and drainage components. As you gently pour water over this watermanagement system, the drain holes will become apparent.

    How To Fix Aleaking Sunroof

    • Step 1

First, clear the sunroof trough of any visible debris. The troughis located just inside the rubber seal and is meant to collect water that comesthrough the sunroof. Once the debris has been cleared, wipe it down with a rag.

    • Step 2

Find the sunroof drain tubes these are small holes located in thecorners of the sunroof under the seal. Using a can of compressed air, shoot airthrough the drain tubes to dislodge any dirt or debris that has collectedwithin.

    • Step 3

Using a thin metal wire, or some string trimmer line from a weedtrimmer, clean the drain holes. Slide the wire through the drain tube whiletwisting. The wire should push out any dirt and debris. Close the sunroof andpour water over it. If this does not stop the water leak, continue to thenext step.

    • Step 4

Check the outer seal around the sunroof for cracks or otherdamage. Seals can dry out from exposure to heat, and will no longer resistleakage properly. If the area around the seal is moldy or pooling water, cleanthe seal and the surrounding area and dry it with a towel.

    • Step 5

Generously apply liquid electrical tape over the seal. Be sureto cover any cracks or openings in the seal. Press the liquid tape firmlyaround the seal and allow it to dry. Once it dries, pour water over the sunroofto be sure the leak is fixed.

    Make A Temporary Leak Patch

Once youve found the leak you can make a temporary leak patch from some plywood or shingle and some roofing tar. Use a putty knife to spread the tar into the leaking hole on the inside of your roof. Place the shingle or plywood onto the tar and spread more of the tar around the edges of your patch.

    Fix Plumbing Vent Boots

How to Fix a Water Leak in Your Car

Plumbing vent boots can be all plastic, plastic and metal, or even two-piece metal units. Check plastic bases for cracks and metal bases for broken seams. Then examine the rubber boot surrounding the pipe. That can be rotted away or torn, allowing water to work its way into the house along the pipe. With any of these problems, you should buy a new vent boot to replace the old one. But if the nails at the base are missing or pulled free and the boot is in good shape, replace them with the rubber-washered screws used for metal roofing systems. You’ll find them at any home center with the rest of the screws. You’ll have to work neighboring shingles free on both sides. If you don’t have extra shingles, be careful when you remove shingles so they can be reused. Use a flat bar to separate the sealant between the layers. Then you’ll be able to drive the flat bar under the nail heads to pop out the nails.
