Certified Contractor Licensing Requirements
A Certified Contractor possesses a certificate of competency issued by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation . A Certified Contractor is permitted to work anywhere in Florida, without being required to fulfill any competency requirements with a local government. Fla. Stat. § 489.105.
To obtain a Certified Contractors license, an applicant must
- Pass the Florida State Construction examination
- Have four years of experience, a combination of college and experience, or experience gained in the military
- Submit a credit report as proof of financial stability and responsibility
- Submit fingerprints and pass a background check
- Submit proof of public liability, property damage, and workers compensation insurance
- Pay the required fee
- Be at least eighteen years old and
- Complete the required application
Passing Floridas Roofing Contractor Examination
A major requirement for those seeking to obtain initial licensure as a roofing contractor is to pass the Roofing Contractor Examination. Understand that before an applicant can take the examination, he or she must possess the basic education and experience obtained and acquired via the following options:
Option 1
A 4-year bachelors degree in engineering, building construction or architecture, and at least one year of actual work experience in actual roof construction and repair.
Option 2
As alternative to a bachelors degree, the equivalent is to have four years of active experience as a worker in the roofing industry of which at least one year was spent as foreman in charge of a crew while acting under instructions of a superintendent.
Option 3
A combination junior or community college education and related work experience as a W-2 employee of a licensed roofing contractor. This requirement works on a sliding scale, as the more accredited courses completed by a licensure applicant, the less years of related experience will be required.
This denotes that those who acquired additional education and training in roofing methods and technologies from their employers, would pose as an advantage.

Florida Roofing License Application
The application process for the Registered and Certified Contractor License are as follows:

You Must Have Evidence Of Experience And Competency
Applicants to become registered contractors in Florida must first pass the Florida Contractor License exam, details of which can be found in the next paragraph, or they must obtain a Certificate of Competency from their local government licensing authority. This is usually obtained from the city or state.
Applicants applying to become a certified contractor must show proof of four years work experience from one or more of several sources. These include vocational schools, training programs, and work experience, demonstrating experience in the field corresponding to the license in question.
This should include a minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience. Up to three years of experience can be substituted for three years of college credit hours. Some licenses require further evidence of specific experience. These include the Florida General Contractor License and the Residential Contractor License.
Applicants also need to pass the Florida Contractor License Examto demonstrate their competency, except for those applying for a Swimming Pool Speciality License. Applicants wishing to book their contractor exam should examine theFlorida exam schedule.
There are cases in which an exemption from experience is available. It is possible to gain a license with less experience for applicants who receive a grandfathered license from a retiring contractor.

This license does not entitle you to perform as a contractor you may only work under the direction of a Master in your respective trade.
Florida Contractor License Types
To get a Florida contractors license the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board, operating under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, requires you to be approved at the state level. The state offers two broad classifications for licensing:
- Certified license which is valid throughout the state, permitting the contractor to work anywhere in Florida.
- Registered license which limits the contractor to work within specific local jurisdictions. It also requires him/her to have been issued a certificate of competency by those jurisdictions.
Applicants can then apply for more specific contractors licenses under these classifications. A general contractor may be most concerned with applying for the following:
- Building Contractor For the construction, repair, remodeling, or improvement of commercial and residential buildings that do surpass three stories in height.
- Residential Contractor For the construction, repair, remodeling, or improvement of one-family to three-family dwellings that do not surpass two stories in height.
- General Contractor Not limited in the construction, repair, alteration, remodeling, or improvement of any structure or building type.

What Is A Journeyman Roofer
Journeyman level experience means that you have worked unsupervised full time for a plastering company, or for a contractor that holds the C-39 Roofing License.
- A journeyman can perform all of the duties associated with his or her trade.
The CSLB will want to see four full-time years over the last ten years. The years do not need to be consecutive, but they do need to be four years in total.

How Much Does It Cost To Get A Florida Contractor License
The cost of a Florida Contractor License will vary depending on whether the application is for state certification or for registration, and when the application is submitted.
Licensing fees for certified contractors are:
- $249 when applying between May 1 of an even year and August 31 of an odd year
- $149 when applying between September 1 of an odd year and April 30 of an even year
Florida General Contractor Exam
All applicants for a certified Florida contractors license are required to pass the Florida State Construction Examination. Your Florida general contractor exam will be administered through Professional Testing, Inc. Before beginning the application process for actual licensure, you will need to take and pass your exam. The exam has three parts, and the applicant must pass all three:
For parts 1 and 2, the paper-and-pencil test may be taken in Tallahassee, Orlando, or Miami. The applicant must select first and second choices on the exam application. The exams are administered every other month, in February, April, June, August, October, and December. Completed applications and indicated fees must be received by the testing office no later than 30 days prior to the examination date.
Applicants for a registered Florida contractors license may, in lieu of taking the Florida State Construction Examination, present a Certificate of Competency issued by the local building authority in the jurisdiction in which they wish to work. Applicants not in possession of a current certificate must take the construction exam before beginning the examination process. All procedures and fees outlined above for the exam for a certified license also apply to the exam for the registered license.
