Once it was complete, I screwed some garden shed storage hooks to the existing shed side where the spars were. These have been great for gardening tools, such as spades, etc.

Then for the remaining walls, I used plastic shelves and shallow twin slot shelves to change them when I wanted.

Choose Size And The Style Of The Shed

Heres my setup: I reviewed what I needed to fit in the shed today, considered a few wants for the future, looked at my budget, and came up with the size. Id seen a lot of sheds but had some specific ideas in mind, after doing some research I came up with my shed style.

Size

I decided to take full advantage of the regulations and build a 10 x 14 shed.

Shed style

I wanted a simple roof. I didnt want ridges or valleys which are a lot of work and can leak. I decided on a Slanted Roof. Its similar to a shed or lean-to roof, or a clerestory roof, but has one visible difference. It has a greater slope. Basically, a slanted roof style is a flat roof tilted high up at one edge to create a very steep slope.

Advantages:

  • Significantly cheaper to build than a gable or multi-slope roof since theres less material in the roof.
  • No ridges or valleys to leak.
  • Faster and easier to build. No complicated angles or cuts.
  • A higher wall on one side for ladders or storage.
  • Clear roof space without truss or rafters.
  • Sheds rain and snow quickly.

Disadvantages:

  • Expensive to convert a mono pitched roof to a multi-slope roof since all walls need to become the same height.
  • Snow can build up against the lower roof wall and cause dampness or rot in the wall.
  • Fast run-off of rain or snow can cause ground erosion behind the shed.

The next step is the most important part: find the best location for my shed.

Attach The Fascia Boards

At this point in the shed installation, we will install the fascia boards on the front and back of the shed as shown below:

Cut your fascia boards as needed to achieve your desired overhang on each side of the shed. In this example, we have a one foot overhang on each side of the shed.

Mount the first fascia board to the front of the shed rafters leaving your desired overhang on each side as shown below.

If you are installing the fascia boards by yourself, you can install a temporary holding brace on on side of the rafters as shown below:

After positioning the fascia board in place, attach it to the front of each rafter using a nail gun. It is also recommended that you install a few exterior rated screws through the fascia board and into the rafters for a bit of additional durability.

Use a clamp as needed to ensure that the fascia board is perfectly flush with the top/bottom of the rafter it is attached to.

After securing the front fasica board to each rafter at the front of the shed, move to the back of the shed and repeat the same process.

Match the same rafter overhang as was done on the front fascia board, position it in place on the back rafters of the shed, and then attach the fascia board to the rafters.

At this stage both the front and back fascia boards have been installed as Shown in red below:

Next, we will install the final two roof rafters.

Finishing Up The Building Of Lean To Shed

The seven rafters will each be 6 feet long. After these boards have been cut, use the Speed Square to determine the size and shape of the two cut-outs needed for the rafters to seat properly. Toe-nail the rafters into place, so as to accommodate the sloping roof with ease and comfort.

  • Install 1/2-inch plywood over the rafters. Install the roofing underlayment, then nail down the composite shingles.
  • Screw ¾-inch sheets of plywood to the top of the roof.
  • With the circular saw, cut down the two side pieces to match the slope of the rafters. Add siding to the front, as well.
  • Cut out a door from the side with the circular saw. Use the cut-out portion as a door by attaching it to the sheds doorframe with hinges.
  • Construct the doors from T1-11 siding
  • Paint or stain the walls and roof of the shed to finish them.

Build A Skillion Roof

The material you chose to cover your roof with is very important. It is what keeps water or snowmelt from percolating through into your shed. It protects the wood of your shed from rot and bug and rodent damage, and from the elements. An important decision with many choices asphalt, steel, aluminum, clay, slate, or cedar shake.

There are advantages and disadvantages to all roofing materials, do your research and make your decision. I chose asphalt shingles. The price was right, color acceptable, and with the single slope roof design and direction my shed faced, only my neighbor would see them.

Advantages:

  • Cheap! Asphalt shingles are one of the least expensive roofing materials. They frequently go on sale too.
  • Easy installation even for a beginner. Follow the instructions on the bundle wrapper or check out videos online.
  • Asphalt shingles are widely available in different colors and textures.

Disadvantages:

  • Will degrade with time may last 7 to 20 years before needing to be replaced.
  • Are a petroleum product so an environmental issue and cost when disposing of them.
  • Susceptible to wind and heat damage. They transfer the solar gain into your building.

Ventilation

If your shed is fairly airtight, youll need to put in ventilation especially if storing gasoline or pesticides in it. No sense poisoning yourself. Add a vent in each gable end near the roof line.

I used 2x6x16ft pine for the rafters.

Constructing The Sheds Floor

  • 1Cut the joists to the intended width of your shed. Joists are the cross-beams that will lie on the ground and hold together the outer framing of the floor. Use 2×6 lumber for the joists. For example, if youre building a 12 by 16 feet shed, cut each of your joists to 16 feet . Use a circular saw to cut the joists.XResearch source
  • If youd rather not cut the joists yourself, you could have the lumber cut at the hardware store from which you bought the lumber.
  • Take safety precautions when using a circular saw. Wear protective eyewear, always cut away from yourself, and never set the circular saw down while the blade is still spinning.
  • Use treated lumber for the joists since the lumber may be in direct contact with the earth.
  • 2Lay out the front and back beams of the floor. Use 2×6 treated lumber for these beams as well. The front and back beams will provide the outline of your sheds floor.XResearch source
  • If the beams arent already the intended length of your shed, use a circular saw to cut them to the sheds length, e.g., 16 feet .
  • 3Fasten the joists to the floor beams using 3 ½-inch galvanized screws. Lay out each of your cut floor joists between the front and back flooring beams. Leave 14 inches between each of the floor joists. Once the joists are laid out, use a screwdriver to drive a 3 ½-inch screw through the front flooring board and into each joist.   • Building Lean To Roof

    I live in a snowy climate, and the lean-to roof slope gave me some concerns. The ideal roof slope for the climate is 5/12, or better. That means for every 12-inches the roof runs it goes up 5-inches. The steeper the slope, the faster it sheds snow, ice, and leaves, so less build-up.

    The best I could do was a 2/12 slope. Any greater and even my wife would have to duck going in! The roof is narrow enough, and close enough to the ground, that if snow build-up got too great, I could use a snow rake to remove it. Plus, it wasnt a big roof with the trusses/rafters unsupported for a long distance.

    I checked the options for finishing the roof. The house and original shed had asphalt shingles, and I planned to use matching shingles if I could.

    Material options:

    • Asphalt shingles: manufacturers recommend a 4/12 slope or greater for asphalt shingles. The minimum rating is 2/12, and the shingle should be labeled Low Slope. The least expensive option, but only warrantied for 10 to 15 years.
    • Metal: low slope metal roofing is usually sheets of ribbed metal, known as standing seam, that are rated for slopes as low as ½/12. Its more expensive than asphalt shingles but longer lasting and is warrantied for 25 or more years.

    We are loving the super welcoming and pleasant vibes this lean to shed cedar storage is bringing! It looks pretty large in size and hence can make perfect storage for a number of things.     Paint Or Stain Your New Lean

    If youd like to add color or stain to your lean-to shed, follow these simple steps:

    • Apply a coat of primer.
    • Paint the exterior in a color of your choice.
    • Allow the first layer to completely dry.
    • Apply a second coat of paint and wait until its completely dry.
    • Add a clear sealant to provide extra protection against the elements.

    If youre wondering how to build a shed thats free-standing, you should know that the steps are similar. However, the building location should be larger. You also need more material to build all four walls.

    Determine Your Shed Roof Rafter Spacing

    After determining the length of the lean to roof rafters, spend some time thinking about your shed roof rafter spacing. Roof rafters are typically spaced 12 or 16 O.C. . However, you want to make adjustments as needed to ensure that the edges of your plywood roof decking will land in the center of a roof rafter.

    For the 10×10 lean to shed roof that was constructed as the example for this article, the following rafter spacing was used.

    In order to frame the lean to roof example displayed above, thirteen pieces of 2x6x16 lumber were needed. Determine the shed roof rafter spacing based on the size and desired rafter overhang for your specific lean to shed.

    Fill In The Framework

    Next, use nails and metal L-brackets to attach the 2×4 roof joists at 2 foot intervals on the wall side of the shed. Employ hurricane ties and nails to accomplish the same thing on the post side.

    Then, attach the 2×4 roof joist supports with nails and metal brackets between the lower stringer on the structures wall and the roof joists. To use your lumber efficiently, choose the length of your joist supports so you can get two supports out of one 8 ft. 2×4 board.

    Pro tip: Make sure you provide plenty of roof support if you live in a colder climate and anticipate having snow on the shed roof.

    Position Your Lean To Shed Roof Rafters In Place

    At this stage, you will place your shed roof rafters on top of the lean to shed based on the rafter spacing determined previously.

    It is recommend that you mark the locations of the rafters on the front wall and back wall top plates all at one time before installing any of the rafters.

    After marking the rafter spacing, lift all of the roof rafters into place:

    How To Build A Lean To Shed – Part 4 – Rafter Build

    The shed floor is made of plywood. A 3/4 inch thick tongue and groove plywood is best for a floor, but due to a pandemic the price of most plywoods was way too expensive. So I opted for 23/32 CDX plywood which was half the cost at the time. I used a chalk line to mark joists and to make straight lines for cutting.

    The lean to shed floor is 10 feet by 10 feet. The plywood is attached to the joists using nails.

    How Long Does It Take To Build A 1010 Lean To Shed

    Great question. This will vary depending on your skill level, amount of help, and time you are able to work on it. I would say it should take about 7-12 work days if you keep at it. Otherwise it could be done on the weekends over the course of a month or two. If you are a well skilled DIY’er and have plans, I think it could be built faster. If you are more of a beginner, the project could obviously take more time. The great thing is that you will learn so much from this project and your new skills can be used to build other structures!

    Building The Lean To Shed’s Framework

    To build mine, I headed to my Dad’s woodyard because all the facilities to make made to measure lean to sheds are all there. But I’ll be sharing a space saving trick that can be done at home.

    Above, I started working on the longest side panel using ripped structural timber. For our large Summerhouse build, I used un-ripped CLS.

    I’ve got 2 ripped structural pieces of timber – the top and bottom of the side panel and lined up. I measure and mark on both, evenly, as to where I want my upright spars to go.
