One Break The Seal On The Target Shingle

The images below depict Sedona Dynasty with ArmourZone shingles.

  • In the photo below, the target shingle is located.
  • The first step obviously requires the removal of the nails holding that shingle to the roof deck. To access the nails, the shingle will need to be lifted, but it is likely bonded to the shingle below by the shingles asphalt sealant spots. Although this sealant bond is quite strong , it can be broken by sliding a flat pry bar carefully under the target shingles edge.
  • This sealant separation is best done in cool weather, as the sealant bond will be more easily sheared by the pry bar when cool in hotter weather, the sealant will be more gooey and tenacious, and harder to separate cleanly.

A word of caution: In cooler weather, the shingles will be stiffer than in warmer weather. Exercise care to avoid distorting the shingles more than necessary.

How To Pick Asphalt Shingles For Your Home

Many types of shingles are used with a sloping roof including:

But of all these material types, the overwhelmingly most popular, versatile, simple to install and cost-effective choice is the asphalt shingle roof.

First used in 1901, asphalt shingles have been part of the American home landscape for over a century. These shingles are durable for the price, affordable and come in many different textures and colors. The most common styles of asphalt shingles are the “strip” shingle or the “laminated” shingle.

Although fairly durable, asphalt shingles are still subject to damage and your roof should be checked after major hail or wind storms. Additionally, you should always make sure that your roof is properly ventilated.

According to a 2007 study by IWCS, about 11 million tons of asphalt shingle waste is generated annually in the US. Shingle waste comes mostly from new or replacement roof installations which can cost several thousands of dollars according to HomeAdvisor.

OK, let’s take a look at some basics related to asphalt shingles.

Tips On Preparing A Previously Coated Roof

It Pays To Know: 10 Smooth Repair Tips For Your Damage ...

How to prepare a previously coated roof for repair

There are few things as hard to effectively repair than roofs that have been already coated once in their service life.

But while they do present difficult problems to overcome, they are still prime candidates for full restoration. Thanks to modern advances in roofing and coating technology, there are now multiple coatings and primers which can stick to almost any substrate or material. But there are other things to consider beside the adhesion potential of new coating products and systems.

What To Look Out ForIf the existing coating hasnt been properly applied , the new system you install may come off the roof along with the old coating. This is why its important to properly prepare a previously coated roof. Ensuring the existing coating has reliable adhesion is critical to the application of a new system.

Testing For AdhesionOne consistent way to test for reliable adhesion is with aggressive pressure washing. Through the use of rotating nozzles and focused pressure washing, you can quickly discover what state the adhesive materials on your current roof are in. Pressure washing helps to show flaws that arent apparent or easy to spot during a general roof survey or inspection.

Regardless of the outcome, after pressure washing and removing older materials, youll be one step closer to applying a new coating system to your roof.

Fascia And Soffits Repairs

The average cost to repair fascia and soffits is $2,300. Fascia is available in wood or PVC and costs around $10 to $30 per 8-foot board. Soffit panels cost around $20 for a 12-foot board.

Soffit runs horizontally and is an attractive place for insects and small animals. Deterioration is fairly easy to see and can cause problems with your gutters.

Your Shingles Are Buckling

Buckling shingles are a telltale sign that you need or replacement. When a shingle buckles, it tends to look a little bit like a distorted wave. Buckled shingles have a high risk of being torn off in a wind storm, such as the summer monsoon weather patterns we get here in Phoenix during the summer.

Shingles usually buckle when they are old, or if they were originally installed poorly. If you can see shingles buckling from the ground, you need to have KY-KO Roofing come out for a free roofing checkup.

You Notice Bare Spots Or Missing Granules

Take a look at your roof from the ground. Do you notice any shingles that look bare when compared to the others? Shingle granules can be washed away over time by a poorly designed valley drainage, insufficient eaves trough, or poorly placed downspouts. Again, most Valley homeowners begin to notice these problems when the monsoon arrives in late summer, or during winter rains.

Once the granules fall off, the shingle is no longer protected from exposure to the elements and can become brittle. Bare spots are a clear indication of a worn shingle roof that needs replacement.

Reasons A Roof Shingle May Be Blown Off Include:

Faulty installation.

Nails may be placed too high on the shingle instead of through the nailing strip, allowing the shingle to tear under adverse conditions.

Roof damage.

If the underlying roof structure is damaged or decaying, the shingles cannot attach securely and can allow moisture or wind to gather underneath them. With decay, the shingle nails can pop out and loosen the shingle.

Cure time not sufficient.

When adhesive seals are used, they need time to cure in order to operate at their maximum efficiency: about 4-6 weeks, depending on the rain and sun conditions. A newly-placed shingle may not have had sufficient time to set.

Age.

A typical roof normally lasts between ten and 15 years. As shingles age and endure years of exposure to the elements, they become weaker in material and seals.

Signs You Need A Roof Repair

DIY roof repair

While your roof may not show any major signs of damage, it doesnt mean you dont need a roof repair. Many roofing experts recommend regularly inspecting your roof to make sure it is in good condition.

During your roof inspection, be sure to keep an eye out for these key signs to determine whether its time to fix up your roof:

  • Signs of water damage such as water stains or the presence of mold
  • Missing, curled, or cracked shingles
  • Rusted metal roofing components
  • Presence of moss or algae on the roof
  • Sagging

If your roof is over 20 years old, it might be time to completely remove and replace your old shingles. If the cost of repairing your roof is reaching the same price as replacing it, an entire roof replacement may be a better investment.

Shingle Roofing

Because ridge-cap shingles cover the peak of the roof, where two angles meet, they play a critical role in keeping rain and melting snow from leaking into the house. And because ridge-cap shingles are bent over the roof, they can deteriorate quicker than the rest of the roof surface. The good news is that they can be replaced without having to replace the entire roof. Inspect the roof and the ridge caps for damage once a year. If you need to replace some of the caps, here’s how to do it:

  • Cut and bend a shingle to conform to the shape of the peak of the roof.
  • Hammer a roofing nail on each side of the shingle, five inches from the bottom edges and one inch from the side edge.
  • Overlap the shingles to cover the nails on the side edges, and use roofing cement to cover the nail heads on the shingle at the end of the roof.

Diy Repair Of An Asphalt Shingle Roof

The roof is one critical component of a house. Every house has one, but very few homeowners know what to do when it begins to wear-out, other than call a roofing contractor. Minor leaks can often be repaired with silicone or roofing cement, commonly called tar, or as it is known in the industry, bull. But what about an area of a roof that has multiple leaks that result from hail damage or a roof that has simply exceeded its life expectancy?

The second alternative when re-roofing a portion of a house is to leave the existing shingles and flashing in place and install new shingles over the old. This method avoids the labor involved in a tear-off, the old layer of shingles helps to add an additional layer of protection from the elements, and the old shingles also provide a ready-made grid that can be followed when installing the new shingles. Without the old shingles to follow, it is necessary to lay out horizontal and vertical control lines to follow when installing the new shingles. Without these lines or some other guide, such as the old shingles, the new shingles will not be straight and will look like a twisting snake.

    Prep Steps

Before launching into nailing down new shingles it is necessary to estimate the number of new shingles that will be needed. There are two common ways to estimate the shingles needed for a roof.

Use a chalk line to mark a straight line on the back side of any shingles that need to be cut.

    How to Repair

    Nail the new shingles down.

    S To Replacing A Shingle

    Step 1:

Using the pry bar, remove the damaged shingle and old nails that may be still attached to the roof. If the shingle is missing altogether, remove any debris or remaining nails. Generally, there are four nails: two holding the missing shingle and two holding the one above it that penetrate the shingle below it. Remove those temporarily as you slide the new shingle into place. Do not place a new shingle overtop old nails this can puncture the new shingle.

    Step 2:

Slide a new shingle under the one above it, taking care not to damage or displace the existing shingles. You may need to remove the shingle nails of the shingle above it in order to create a secure attachment. Replace the existing shingle and nail into place, and replace the nails in the single above it.

    Fixing Curled Or Warped Shingles

It is common for older shingles to begin to curl. Its best to try to straighten out your warped shingles in moderately warm weather. Shingles are much more flexible under warmer conditions. In the cold, shingles can become brittle and break easily. To straighten a curved shingle, simply apply a liberal amount of roof cement to the bottom of the shingle around the edges, and press the shingle down flat onto the roofs surface.
