How To Become A Tesla Solar Roof Distributor

To become a Tesla solar roof distributor, make sure you participate in the electronic verification distribution program. After qualification, you will receive consideration for employment to be committed to diversity in the workplace.

A solar roof distributor is such that delivers a premium and durable glass roof tile that has integrated solar technology. And such products can power a home with one hundred percent renewable energy.

Note that each solar roof is custom designed to maximize energy production while maintaining a seamless aesthetic. So Tesla will be hiring roofers, installers, and electricians who will work together to deploy solar roof materials around the globe.

Tesla Solar Roof Available In Central Oregon Bend Resident Says Extra Cost Is Worth It

BEND, Ore. â A new way to do solar roofing has arrived in Central Oregon, and itâs backed by Tesla, the high-profile electric car maker.

Jake Hermeling is the first Central Oregon homeowner to have a Tesla solar roof built on a house.

I think the beauty of the product is that you cant tell its solar, Hermeling said Monday.

The roof has solar tiles that are designed to look like shingles, instead of the typical solar panels.

Most people come by, they have no idea, Hermeling said.

The roof was installed by Greenlee Roofing, a Bend-based company that received clearance from Tesla last January.

The companyâs website said the solar roof tiles are âare more than three times stronger than standard roofing tiles.â

A few other companies have clearance throughout the state, but Director of Sales Hobie Smith said Greenlee is the first and only in Central Oregon.

Smith said a roof like Hermelings would roughly cost $18,000 to $20,000 for typical shingles. The solar roof is close to $25,000 to $30,000 more.

But Hermeling said having a ânet positive house,â with the opportunity for a tax rebate, is worth the upfront cost.

As I was factoring it into my build cost, it was not a difficult decision for me, on the financial side, he said.

Smith said the solar roof could eliminate a homeownerâs typical monthly energy cost.

Everything that he would be spending per month, whether it be $150 to $200 per month, hes gaining back, Smith said.

What Do I Get From The Tesla Solar Roof

Tesla is pitching Solar Roof as a breakthrough of technology and design. And while it’s not the first time someone has incorporated solar power into a building’s design — the practice is called building- integrated photovoltaics, or BIPV — Solar Roof is certainly the highest-profile instance.

When you order a Tesla Solar Roof, you aren’t getting solar panels to cover your roof, you’re getting a new roof made up of regular and photovoltaic shingles. The result is a covering that powers your house and keeps you dry all while looking like a normal roof to the average passerby.

This means scrapping your current roof. While Tesla has recently said it will install Solar Roofs on top of newer, single-layer roofs of some designs, roofs made of metal, clay, wood or architectural shingles will have to be replaced. Flat roofs aren’t eligible for Solar Roof, though regular solar panels could work.

Unlike Tesla’s solar panel offering, Solar Roof comes in more than four sizes. Tesla’s solar shingle has a maximum output of 71.67 watts, according to Electrek, which received the shingle’s specs. This means the Solar Roof can be more specifically tailored to your energy needs.

Tesla Solar Roof offers an unobtrusive solar-generating solution.

You can install Powerwall batteries indoors or outdoors. They’re 6 inches deep, 2.5 feet wide and almost 4 feet tall.

Tesla Installs Its First Solar Roofs, as SolarCity Disappears ...

At the moment, the Tesla Solar Roof is being installed in various locations across the United States.

At the October 2019 unveiling, Teslaâs senior director of energy operations Kunal Girota explained that Tesla is installing retrofit solar panels in 25 states, and it will be offering the roof in all of those states. The goal, however, is to expand across the country with both the companyâs internal teams and third parties.

At the time of writing, Teslaâs website accepts orders for its retrofit solar panels in 24 locations: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusets, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.

The Tesla Solar Roof section of the website accepts orders for all 50 states bar Minnesota. Inverse has reached out to Tesla for more information.

As for international buyers, there may be some good news on that front. Musk stated on Twitter in February 2020 that he was âlooking forward to international expansion later this year.â

What Is The Difference Between A Solar Roof And Solar Panels

Still not sure if a solar roof is right for you? Here are a few of the major ways that Teslas new product sets itself apart from competitors.

  • Integration: Solar panels sit on top of your roof, either on one plane or several. Many solar panel users install them on the plane of the roof that receives the most prolonged sunlight throughout the day. Tesla Solar Roofs are, well, a roof. They are an integrated system which has photovoltaic cells within steel roof shingles.
  • Total cost: Tesla Solar Roof Systems can cost two to three times more than a solar panel system. However, in both cases, you can save on your energy bill over time because of net metering which occurs when you use solar energy as your primary energy source.
  • Location: The Tesla Solar Roof is just that a roof. The roofing and energy system are intrinsically connected. Some people would rather not have solar panels on their roof solar panels can be installed anywhere on your property. This is especially effective if you have acres of land you can place them on.
  • Powerwall: Teslas Powerwall is much more effective at storing and dispensing energy than systems available for traditional solar panels. This is an option you have when installing your Tesla system that includes this advanced solar battery that always ensures you have energy, rain or shine, power outage or no.

Solar Shingles Cost Compared To A Conventional Roof Replacement Cost

The cost of a solar roof is going to seem a bit high compared to a traditional roof replacement or a conventional solar installation, but it’s important to keep in mind that a solar roof installation includes the value of both a roofing material and a solar panel system.

When you install a Tesla solar roof, you install both active and inactive shingles. The active shingles convert sunlight into energy for your home, while the inactive shingles just act as regular shingles.

Based on Teslas estimates, the solar shingles come to $1.80 per watt. This is lower than the average cost of traditional solar panels, which is around $3.00 per watt.

The cost of the inactive shingles depends on the complexity of your roof, so it will cost between $20 per square foot of total roof space. This is higher than the average for traditional asphalt shingles, which is somewhere between $3.50 to $5.50.

Based on these quotes, a traditional roof replacement would cost around $9,350 for a 1,700 square foot roof and a conventional 10 kW solar system would be $30,000, before incentives. That brings you a grand total of $39,350. The entire Tesla solar roof for the same home, assuming it has a simple roof complexity, would come out to around $52,000 not including roof tear off costs.

Thats not too much higher than a conventional roof replacement and solar panel system, but thats assuming the lowest price Tesla will give you for roofing materials.

How Much Do Tesla Solar Panels Cost

While Tesla is known for high quality , the company actually advertises its solar panel systems as the Lowest-Cost Solar Panels in America. Is that a fair claim to make?

Kind of. The cost of solar panels depends on a number of factors, including the size of your system, installation complexities, available local tax incentives and more. Given all of these considerations, though, Tesla seeks to ensure it can truly follow through on the lowest cost claim via its price-match guarantee. Through this program, homeowners can present a recent quote from a competitor for a similar system, and Tesla will match the price.

In general, the average Tesla solar system of about 8.2 kW will cost a home $11,840 , while an extra-large system of 16.3 kW will cost $22,200. Tesla estimates that most homeowners recoup that investment in six to eight years.

Scenario : Youre Interested In Going Solar But Dont Need To Replace Your Roof

This is the most common scenario for the vast majority of homeowners in the U.S. today. Youve been interested in installing solar panels for a while, and realize that costs have come down enough for it to be an achievable home upgrade. Youve also heard a lot of media buzz around the Tesla Solar Roof lately, but arent sure if its worth the cost. Most importantly, you dont need to replace your roof in the next three to five years.

If this description sounds like you, we typically would recommend that Teslas Solar Roof wont make financial sense for your home. Heres why: it is both a new roof and a solar installation. If you dont need a new roof, you risk getting upsold on a product that you werent even shopping for in the first place. And the price tag of this upsell is considerable. However, in November 2021, electrek reported that Teslas new tile datasheet mentions that the solar tiles can now be installed over existing roofs, which might be a game changer for the cost-effectiveness of this system. Because these details have not yet been released, for our example, well assume youre replacing your full roof.

Roof size

While the cost of your new solar panels will roughly stay the same at $23,400 regardless of your roof size, the cost of a Tesla Solar Roof will vary significantly. The table below shows estimated quotes for you based on your roof size :

What Sets Teslas Solar Panel Shingles Apart From Other Solar Shingles On The Market

Tesla Solar Roof V3: Pricing, Design, Rumored Features, Colors, Launch Date

Tesla is one of the first solar shingle manufacturers to make a truly cohesive solar shingle product. When you install a Tesla solar roof, you get two kinds of shingles from Tesla: active shingles and inactive shingles .

Because you get all of the roofing material from Tesla, it makes your roof look entirely uniform – you cant really tell the difference between the solar portion and the non-solar portion. Most other solar shingle brands only sell the active shingle portion, so they arent designed to look identical to the remaining shingles on your roof.

On the downside, this means that you do have to get an entire roof replacement when you install Tesla solar shingles, while other shingle brands only require you to replace a portion of your roof. The upside, however, is you wind up with a great looking roof that generates solar energy.

How Does Solar Power Work

Simply put, solar power harnesses the light from the sun and converts this into electricity which can then be used to power your home or sold back to the grid when in excess.

This is achieved through the installation of photovoltaic modules onto a roof or ground-mounted structure. These modules generate DC electricity which travels through cabling to a solar inverter where it is converted into AC electricity.

From the inverter, the AC electricity is directed into your main switchboard from where it will be sent around your home to power your lights and appliances.

If you are producing more electricity than you personally use, this excess may be exported back into the grid at a fixed price, known as a feed-in tariff.

How Long Does A Tesla Solar Roof Last

Since Tesla has only been producing and installing its solar roofs since around 2018, there are no real-life statistics for the longevity of the solar tiles. However, Tesla offers a 25-year tile warranty as standard. This is also the standard warranty length for a traditional solar array.

Tesla feels confident in offering such a long warranty as they have engineered their tiles to be, and we quote, “durable, strong and engineered for all-weather protection.”

Each tile is 15 inches by 45 inches and has met a suit of industrial standards. They meet the requirements of ASTM D3161 Class F for Wind resistance, ANSI FM 4473 Class 3 for hail, and have also achieved the highest fire-resistance rating of Class A.

How Long Does The Tesla Solar Roof Last

The Problem With Teslas Solar Roof

Teslas solar shingles are designed with durability in mind and have a Class 3 hail rating, the second highest rating available, as well as the highest fire rating possible.

Plus, the Tesla Solar Roof is covered by a 25-year product warranty, a 25-year module warranty, and a 25-year weatherization warranty. So, just like traditional solar panels, you can expect the Tesla Solar Roof to last at least 25 years.

The 25-year product warranty exceeds solar industry standards, with most solar panels offering between 10 and 12-year product warranties. The 25-year module warranty covers the active solar shingles and gives you an idea of how much power the shingles will provide you as they age. This warranty falls right in line with solar industry standards – its not bad, but its nothing impressive either.

The weatherization warranty is designed to cover the roofing aspect of the Solar Roof. Like most shingle warranties, its prorated, meaning how much is covered depends on how long youve had the roof. You can probably find shingle warranties out there that provide a little more coverage than Teslas, but its not horrible.

The Tesla Powerwall is covered by a separate 10-year warranty.
