How To Install A Roofing Corrugated Fiberglass Panel

A corrugated fiberglass panel is prepared from a mat of high strength glass fibers embedded in an organic resin, creating a semi-transparent coat. This type of panel is shaped into a rolling prototype like a wave. The panels allow the filtration of light, but keep out the severity of direct sunlight. Being bendable, they make an excellent roofing material that is trouble-free to put in and can be drilled, punched, sawed and nailed without causing damage to the panel. Follow the simple steps below to effectively install your own corrugated fiberglass roofing panel.

• Protective glasses or goggles
• Barrier cream
• Mechanical or Electric Drill
• Paint brush

Step 1 – Post foots and Anchors

Post foots should be something like 14 inches deep and 12 inches across. Set 8×3/8-inch bolts about 3 inches deep into poured concrete for post anchors. Wood posts may also be secured with 4-inch angle brackets. Attach 2×6-inch rafter hangers to header, then attach header to house studs with lag screws.

Step 2 – Setting Crossbeams

Drill posts and set on pins. Toenail crossbeam to post. NOTE: Allow 7-feet 4 inches from floor to bottom of front header for best ventilation.

Pre-notch rafters to compensate for slope. Allow a 1-inch minimum pitch per foot for adequate drainage. Put together rafters to header and crossbeam with 1-inch screws and nails.

How To Install Ridge Cap For Metal Roofing

Ridge cap installation is completed after the gable flashing has been installed. It’s normally the last piece of trim that’s installed on a metal roof.

When you install a ridge cap, it’s important to leave a gap between the peak of the corrugated sheets. This will give you the flexibility to adjust the sheeting and keep low side of the roof straight.

No special tools or skills are needed. Just keep in mindcommon dimension lumber and standard size panels when laying out yourdesign.

Fiberglass Batts Or Glass Mineral Wool Metal Roof Insulation

The most common material used for an insulating metal roof is fiberglass batts or glass mineral wool. Both materials make a great physical barrier between the interior building and the metal roof.

The batts are located side to side on the rafter of the roof. Since they do not make a continuous barrier, air could flow through them easily which causes heat loss in the end.

The insulation batts are not a closed system and it may need an additional vapor barrier. Unfortunately, this barrier cannot be installed directly underneath the roof. Once the water reaches the batts, it needs to be replaced.

This insulation type is not great for metal roofing insulation underlayment. It is still able to cause water condensation and heat loss without any option to address it. You can always make an intricate fiberglass insulation system. However, it will add cost for the roofing.

How To Install Reglet Trim

Reglet trim is installed between a roof and a wall. A small joint is cut into the wall and it’s installed along with a counter flashing such as an endwall or sidewall.

Reglet flashing will be used when you have a chimney or cricket on your roof. It’s also needed when you’re installing endwall or sidewall on a roof that does not have metal siding.

Fiberglass Roof Solar Panel Installation

If your RV roof is made of fiberglass, you luckily do not need to drill holes into your roof to mount your solar panels.

Simply apply VHB Very High Bond tape, which will be almost impossible to remove when applied correctly.

Youll still want to install the appropriate mounting bracket to your solar panel. Then you will map out where the bracket feet will land, clean the roof and foot with alcohol, wait for it to try, and then install the VHB tape per the instructions.

Once everything is set, your panels will be unmovable and the great news is youll have no additional holes in your roof to monitor for leaks.

This method works whether you have tilting or non tilting mounting hardware.

If youre installing flexible solar panels, the same process applies in the section above simply glue them to the RV roof using the adhesive recommended by the panel manufacturer.
