What Is Tesla Solar Roof
Elon Musks Solar Roof was first unveiled in October 2016. Around two years later, Reuters reported that Tesla had only activated 12 roofs in California. Installations remained extremely limited in the U.S. until October 2019, when Tesla unveiled a tweaked version of the roof tiles to enable faster installation.

Wood Mackenzie claims Sunrun accounts for 13 percent of the total residential solar market.

If you havent been keeping up with Teslas involvement with solar roofing, the main thing to know is theyve been working on a solar roofing product for the last few years that will integrate seamlessly with your home design. Meaning instead of having to settle for bulky solar panels you can install a roof which looks just like any other roof but it happens to be solar-powered as well. To have a solar-powered roof and wont affect your curb appeal is a dream for many homeowners. But how far along is Tesla with its new solar roofing product? The following are three major updates we think youll be pleased to hear.
Tesla Solar Roof: How It All Came Together
In January 2021, Nochta switched on his new roof. His 1,175-square-foot roof has enough solar-harvesting tiles to generate 7.6 kilowatts of power. The Tesla Solar Roof uses a mix of solar tiles and dummy tiles the latter used at the edge of the installation to enable teams to more easily cut edge tiles down to size and fit the roof seamlessly to the house.
Nochta first installed solar panels on his house in 2016, supplied by SolarCity. SolarCity merged with Tesla later that year.
The first installation was less than three kilowatts not much energy, which meant the couple was using slightly more than they produced. But as the household grew to add children and parents, Nochta discovered it was surprisingly difficult to expand the existing solar panel system to add more capacity. The new panels would have to work as part of a dual system, with two inverters feeding into the house.
These inverters are vital for getting solar power into the home. As Energy.gov explains, they convert the panels direct current electricity with a single voltage in one direction into the alternating current used in homes where the voltage moves between positive and negative.
I think the people hate me at Tesla.
Nochta had a couple of friends that do roofs and they estimated it would cost $8,000 to $10,000 to replace the roof. Including new solar panels would cost another $10,000 to $15,000.
At that point, its just, dont do it, just get a Solar Roof done, Nochta says.

How Much Does A Tesla Solar Roof Cost Compared To Solar Panels
Its easier to compare these costs with an example, so lets dive in.
Lets say you own a home in California with a simple complexity roof thats roughly 2,000 square feet, and your average monthly electric bill is $200. Tesla would recommend installing a 8.18 kW solar roof with one Powerwall battery that would cost $51,800 before the federal tax credit, and about $45,248 after the tax credit.
An 8.18 kW conventional solar panel system with one battery would cost about $35,040 before the tax credit, and $25,929 after the tax credit based on the average cost of solar in the U.S. This solar-plus-battery system is cheaper than the Tesla solar roof on its own, but the solar roof isnt just a solar panel installation it also includes the cost of getting a new roof.
So, how much is a traditional roof replacement? Well, lets say you use architectural asphalt shingles that cost around $8.00 per square foot including installation it could cost about $16,000 to reroof the entire roof. That would bring the total cost of installing conventional solar panels and completing a roof replacement to $41,929.
In this example, the Tesla solar roof is a little over $3,000 more expensive than the conventional panels and roof replacement. Its not that big of a difference. But, if your roof ends up being more complex, the solar roof system would cost you another $14,870, making the difference even more stark.

How Do The Savings Of The Tesla Solar Roof Compare To Traditional Solar Panels
Now we know the cost of a solar roof compared to a traditional solar installation and roof replacement, but how do the savings stack up?
A traditional 8.18 kW solar system in California will produce around 17,688 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. Based on an electric rate of $0.19 per kWh, that would save about $3,360 per year, and about $97,000 over the 25-year lifetime of the system.
Teslas production estimates for the solar roof would bring yearly savings to around $2,354 and the lifetime savings to $66,270.
The lower solar production from the solar roof is mainly because solar shingle orientation is determined by the slope of your roof. Rack-mounted solar panels are able to be oriented for ideal solar generation, giving you higher energy bill savings. So, you could actually install a smaller traditional solar panel system and still cover your electric bill.
