What Is The Best Way To Clean Solar Panels On Your Roof
A soft cloth or biodegradable soap is the best approach to clean solar panels. It is critical not to use aggressive cleaning products on solar panels since they can cause damage, and solar panels are expensive to replace.
If you clean often, you may be able to eliminate dirt by simply running a hose along the panels. It is not recommended to use harsh chemicals on your solar panels.
How Much Does The Tesla Solar Roof Cost
With the new complexity categories explained above, its a bit difficult to fully estimate the cost of a Tesla Solar Roof. The cost varies significantly depending on whether your roof is simple or complex and depending on the square footage of your roof. Teslas estimate calculator shows that if youre installing a system on a simple, small roof, the price is fairly comparable to that of a new asphalt roof installation plus solar panels. However, as you increase the size and/or complexity of your roof, this number quickly skyrockets.
For an 8.2 kilowatt system in northern California, Tesla estimates that the solar roof will cost $48,460 before incentives if you have an intermediately complex, 2,000 square foot roof. However, if you update your roof to be considered complex, the price increases to $54,940 and if your intermediately complex roof is 2,500 square feet instead of 2,000 square feet, the price jumps to $56,460. You can dig further into these calculations in our comparison of the cost of the solar roof vs. standard panels.
Tesla Standard Solar Panels
The most basic offering, and the one the majority of customers are envisioning when considering solar energy for their household, are standard Tesla solar panels. These work the same way as any rooftop solar panel, but the main features that set Tesla solar panels apart from competitors products include:
- 24/7 monitoring: You can keep tabs on your panels at any time and from anywhere through a mobile monitoring app. The app tracks your panels performance, efficiency and generation, as well as detects any issues with your system.
- Aesthetics: Tesla prioritizes the design of its rooftop panels in a way competitors dont, creating a sleek, blended, low-profile installation that brings direct curbside appeal.
- Streamlined pre-installation: As part of Teslas solar panel installation process, homeowners send in photos of their equipment and system spaces rather than having a crew come out to inspect these areas. This helps bring total costs below the national average.
The exact nature of the installation chosen for your home will be customized based on your rooftop, power needs, geography, budget and more.

The Tesla Solar Roof: What You Need To Know
The Tesla Solar Roof is a building-integrated photovoltaic product that takes the functionality of solar panels and integrates it into roof shingles. A home with Tesla roof shingles installed would have a protective and complete roof with the capacity to generate solar energy. By installing the solar roof, you dont have to install solar panels to generate electricity, which some property owners find visually unappealing.
Some solar industry stakeholders believe that solar needs to be rebranded as an aesthetic and technical improvement that can be a part of a home renovation rather than a hefty module affixed to your rooftop. That sentiment was emphasized in Elon Musks October 2016 launch of Teslas first roofing product. With the solar roof, the company aims to bring solar further into the mainstream by removing any sort of aesthetic concerns that homeowners may have.
I think theres quite a radical difference between having solar panels on your roof that actually make your house look better versus ones that do not, I think its going to be a night-and-day difference, said Musk in a statement before the official launch of Teslas first solar roof. Two months later, he unveiled the solar roof using a crowded, suburban event in California to demonstrate that his panel design was so seamlessly integrated that the entire audience of press needed to be altered to its presence on the house in front of them.

Tesla Solar Roof Cost Varies By Roof Complexity
The cost of installing a Tesla roof varies significantly depending on your homes design. In April 2021, Tesla confused and frustrated many of their customers when they sent emails with increased prices to customers that had already signed contracts based on their initial quotes. While the company blamed these price hikes on underestimated roof complexity, Tesla has yet to provide a full explanation as to where their calculations faltered . In 2022, Tesla announced they would not be scheduling any more installations in new markets. The company did add a roof complexity disclaimer to their Solar Roof calculator, which Tesla notes will be determined after you place an order for a Solar Roof. On their website, Tesla divides the complexity into three categoriessimple, intermediate, and complexbased on the following criteria:
- Simple: single-level roof, uncrowded mounting planes, few obstructions , low pitch
- Intermediate: multi-level roof , more crowded mounting plane, more obstructions , higher pitch
- Complex: multi-level roof , heavily crowded mounting plane, many obstructions , steep pitch
You can start to estimate the cost of the Tesla Solar Roof for your property by using Teslas Solar Roof calculator.

What Is Tesla Solar Roof
Elon Musks Solar Roof was first unveiled in October 2016. Around two years later, Reuters reported that Tesla had only activated 12 roofs in California. Installations remained extremely limited in the U.S. until October 2019, when Tesla unveiled a tweaked version of the roof tiles to enable faster installation.
Ironically, CEO Elon Musk told an audience in 2019 that it would be the year of the solar roof the year when solar deployments reached their lowest point since the roofs launch.
In 2020, Musk claimed he wants Teslas energy business to expand from less than 10 percent of the company to 50 percent. Evidence suggests, however, that Teslas solar installs remain relatively limited.
Teslas solar deployments which include its retrofit solar panels and the Solar Roof in the fourth quarter of 2021 were effectively the same as the fourth quarter of 2020.
Tesla remains the second-largest residential solar installer in the U.S., behind first-placed Sunrun. Teslas 2021 total of 345 megawatts was an impressive 68 percent improvement over the previous year, but solar panel supplier Sunrun installed 792 megawatts of capacity that same year. Wood Mackenzie claims Sunrun accounts for 13 percent of the total residential solar market.
Musks long-term vision for the future is one where its odd for a roof not to collect energy to power the building within.
But how does an early adopter feel about Teslas roof? We asked.
How Does The Tesla Solar Roof Work
Tried and true solar technology. Updated modern look.
Like traditional solar panels, your Tesla Solar Roof generates power when the sun is out
An inverter installed in your garage, basement, or other out-of-the-way location transforms harvested power into usable renewable energy for your home
When you add in a Tesla Powerwall, you can also store away this energy to use when the grid goes out
The main difference? How sleek your roof looks.
Big Tesla Solar Roofing Updates To Make You Happy
If you havent been keeping up with Teslas involvement with solar roofing, the main thing to know is theyve been working on a solar roofing product for the last few years that will integrate seamlessly with your home design. Meaning instead of having to settle for bulky solar panels you can install a roof which looks just like any other roof but it happens to be solar-powered as well. To have a solar-powered roof and wont affect your curb appeal is a dream for many homeowners. But how far along is Tesla with its new solar roofing product? The following are three major updates we think youll be pleased to hear.
Tesla Solar Roof: How It All Came Together
In January 2021, Nochta switched on his new roof. His 1,175-square-foot roof has enough solar-harvesting tiles to generate 7.6 kilowatts of power. The Tesla Solar Roof uses a mix of solar tiles and dummy tiles the latter used at the edge of the installation to enable teams to more easily cut edge tiles down to size and fit the roof seamlessly to the house.
Nochta first installed solar panels on his house in 2016, supplied by SolarCity. SolarCity merged with Tesla later that year.
The first installation was less than three kilowatts not much energy, which meant the couple was using slightly more than they produced. But as the household grew to add children and parents, Nochta discovered it was surprisingly difficult to expand the existing solar panel system to add more capacity. The new panels would have to work as part of a dual system, with two inverters feeding into the house.
These inverters are vital for getting solar power into the home. As Energy.gov explains, they convert the panels direct current electricity with a single voltage in one direction into the alternating current used in homes where the voltage moves between positive and negative.
I think the people hate me at Tesla.
Nochta had a couple of friends that do roofs and they estimated it would cost $8,000 to $10,000 to replace the roof. Including new solar panels would cost another $10,000 to $15,000.
At that point, its just, dont do it, just get a Solar Roof done, Nochta says.

How Much Does A Tesla Solar Roof Cost Compared To Solar Panels
Its easier to compare these costs with an example, so lets dive in.
Lets say you own a home in California with a simple complexity roof thats roughly 2,000 square feet, and your average monthly electric bill is $200. Tesla would recommend installing a 8.18 kW solar roof with one Powerwall battery that would cost $51,800 before the federal tax credit, and about $45,248 after the tax credit.
An 8.18 kW conventional solar panel system with one battery would cost about $35,040 before the tax credit, and $25,929 after the tax credit based on the average cost of solar in the U.S. This solar-plus-battery system is cheaper than the Tesla solar roof on its own, but the solar roof isnt just a solar panel installation it also includes the cost of getting a new roof.
So, how much is a traditional roof replacement? Well, lets say you use architectural asphalt shingles that cost around $8.00 per square foot including installation it could cost about $16,000 to reroof the entire roof. That would bring the total cost of installing conventional solar panels and completing a roof replacement to $41,929.
In this example, the Tesla solar roof is a little over $3,000 more expensive than the conventional panels and roof replacement. Its not that big of a difference. But, if your roof ends up being more complex, the solar roof system would cost you another $14,870, making the difference even more stark.

Tesla Solar Payment Options
To help customers estimate the cost of installing solar panels, Tesla provides them with a cost calculator based on their location and average monthly electric bill. To help you get an idea of how much a Tesla solar system costs, we received a quote for a single-family home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with an average monthly electric bill of $170.
Tesla allows customers to own their system through a cash purchase or loan in select states.
- Solar loanSolar loans work similarly to a home or auto loan, with customers paying a monthly fee to own their panels and benefit from solar incentives.
- PurchaseYou may also purchase a Tesla solar system outright if you have the funds available.
How Do The Savings Of The Tesla Solar Roof Compare To Traditional Solar Panels
Now we know the cost of a solar roof compared to a traditional solar installation and roof replacement, but how do the savings stack up?
A traditional 8.18 kW solar system in California will produce around 17,688 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. Based on an electric rate of $0.19 per kWh, that would save about $3,360 per year, and about $97,000 over the 25-year lifetime of the system.
Teslas production estimates for the solar roof would bring yearly savings to around $2,354 and the lifetime savings to $66,270.
The lower solar production from the solar roof is mainly because solar shingle orientation is determined by the slope of your roof. Rack-mounted solar panels are able to be oriented for ideal solar generation, giving you higher energy bill savings. So, you could actually install a smaller traditional solar panel system and still cover your electric bill.

Can My Roof Hold The Weight Of Solar Panels
Yes, the weight of solar panels does not exceed the load-bearing capacity of any traditional roofing material. On the other hand, installing too many solar panels can overload your roof and cause it to collapse.
When you are planning to install solar panels on your roof, consider the type and size of your home, its unique structural design and composition, and the weight that this structure can bear.
Is Tesla Solar Roof Profitable
The key point is revenue growth. Tesla announced $369 million in income from solar and storage in 2019. Revenue from such a firm remained flat in Q2 2020, at $370 million.
This quarters revenue was more than double what Tesla earned in the corresponding periods in 2019 and 2020.
It is important to look at the revenue trend to determine whether a company will likely post losses in the short term.

Solar Power In California
Last fact-checked on January 23, 2020, byCatherine Lane
California is one of the best places in the nation to install solar panels. A combination of high average sun exposure, expensive utility rates, solar tax credit, and the states net metering law means homeowners can get an excellent return by installing solar panels on their homes.
The Golden State also has some of the most aggressive greenhouse gas emission goals in the nation. Californias renewable portfolio standard requires utilities to derive 60% of their retail electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
Giga Berlin Takeaway: Tesla Solar Roof In Germany By 2022
Tesla solar roof and panels basically pay for themselves: Tesla states that this system produces 25-32 kWh per day, which, at the current rate, is $3.21-$4.10 per day. If the rate stays constant, the system will pay for itself in roughly 8 -12 years, but it depends on many different parameters, like location, utility prices, etc. .
After Tesla installs your solar system, you will still be connected to the grid and have an account with your electric utility provider. Your rate plan may change post-installation as required by your utility provider. Solar can greatly reduce your electric bill, but you will often still have a residual bill. Elon Musk said a while ago:
With & Powerwall battery you are your own utility. 24/7 clean, sustainable electricity.
He also mentioned that Tesla is implementing the green electricity tariff, which is soon to be offered throughout Germany, with the British energy company Octopus Energy, which was launched in 2015, has since expanded to Germany, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the USA and is among the 25 fastest growing companies in Europe in 2021.
The European patent was identical or at least similar to the one Tesla filed in the United States under the same title. The Solar Roof tiles patent filed in the US received the publication number US2019/0028055 A1. It was published on January 24, 2019.
