What Is A Tin Roof

The two primary types of tin roofs homeowners install are standing seam metal roofs and the flat-lock tin roof. Both are attached to wood sheathing using blind-nailed clips. The flat-locked tin roof requires superior skill to form the pieces and more importantly, soldering the seams between all the interlocking pieces of metal.

Tin roofing is actually rolled steel, coated with tin. The tin is chemically bonded to the steel in a plating process where the steel is heated quite hot and saturated with molten tin. The steel and tin molecules that are rapidly vibrating because of the heat, interlock and bond permanently to one another. This process makes your tin roof durable and resistant to cracking. If your tin roof is properly installed and maintained it can last for up to 40 years! Tin roofing is also eco-friendly as it is usually made from 30 to 60 percent recycled materials.

Energy Efficiency And Eco

As homeowners become more aware of the wider environmental effects of heating and cooling their homes, many begin to prioritize efficiency as both a means of saving money and protecting the environment. Metal is a highly reusable material, with many metal roofs being made of about 30%60% recycled metal. Their high durability also means they dont need to be replaced as often, whereas torn and damaged asphalt shingles end up in the landfill.

Additionally, since most metal roofs are reflective, they direct the heat of the sun away from the building they cover, blocking heat and lowering cooling costs. Even non-reflective metal can be treated with special paint that blocks UV rays. Experts typically estimate that youll save about 20%30% off the cost of cooling your home in the summer with a metal roof.

How Much Does A Metal Roof Cost

That all depends on the type of roofing materials that you choose and the style of property, along with any other individual details that may make installing a metal roof more or less complicated.

The cost of metal roofing per sq. ft. or the metal roof cost per square or the cost of a metal roof vs. shingles obviously makes a difference, but there are other factors including the aesthetics of your property, the amount of time you plan to spend there before you resell , and the energy efficiency of having a metal roof versus asphalt or wooden shingles.

You should also keep in mind that the total cost of a standing seam metal roof or a metal shingle roof also includes the specialized labor required to install the metal roof as well as the raw materials, and this may be the reason why some homeowners choose shingles over metal roofing.

For some properties, the style of the home and the climate of the area it is located in may mean that asphalt shingles or wood shingles are a superior choice.

That said if you choose metal roofing systems of any kind whether you go with standing seam, copper shingles, zinc shingles, steel shingles, aluminum roofing, or any other kind of metal roofing system, you will likely benefit from their durability and longevity, heating and cooling efficiency, resale value for both the metal roofing materials themselves and your property as a whole, and overall pleasing visual appearance.

Steel Roofing Installation Replacement Toronto

Metal roofing installation in Toronto comes with a lot of advantages when utilized correctly. There was a time when people did not opt for steel roofing installation. However, as time has gone on metal roofing textures have improved many residential homes and business that see metal roofing as a very viable choice.

Some of the advantages of metal roofing include the fact that it provides much more protection for your home. Steel roofing usually lasts somewhere around sixty years and the time and money spent on repairing and replacing other types of roof far exceeds the costs of maintaining a metal roof. Metal roofing is also great in that it reflects much more sunlight than other types of roofs as radiation from the sun is deflected away from your home as oppose to being absorbed which would take up a lot more energy for your home with another type of roof. Roofs that absorb heat can force you to spend more on air conditioning as they retain too much heat. A metal roof can make your home much cooler in the summer months and lower energy costs.

Advantages Of Metal Roofs

Metal roofs offer many benefits, including:

  • Longevity. Metal roofs can last 40-70 years, depending on the material. Traditional asphalt roofing materials have an estimated life expectancy of roughly 12-20 years.
  • Durability. If installed correctly, some metal roofs can sustain wind gusts up to 140 miles per hour, will not corrode or crack and may be impact-resistant . In addition, metal roofs don’t need the periodic costly maintenance that other roofing materials often require. However, they should be inspected periodically to make sure no repairs are required.
  • Safety. Metal roofs will not spark and ignite into flames during a wildfire or lightning strike.
  • Energy efficiency. Metal roofs reflect the suns UV and infrared light rays that contribute to roof surface radiant heat, which can result in a 10-25% reduction in cooling costs.
  • Environmentally friendly. Metal roofs not only have 25-95% recycled content, depending on the material used, but are also 100% recyclable at the end of their life as a roof. In contrast, most shingle tear-off waste ends up as part of the building-related waste stream up to 20 billion pounds per year.

How To Purchase Metal Roof Panels From A Manufacturer

The process of purchasing metal roofing is different when using a manufacturer as opposed to a contractor or distributor.

As we mentioned earlier, you will need to provide a materials list to the manufacturer. This is a list that contains the materials needed for your job such as: how many panels, sheet lengths for each panel, list of trim and flashing pieces, the pitch of your roof, metal roofing underlayment, and accessories.

If you require a little help and guidance but generally know what youre going to need, then a manufacturer will typically provide enough help to bridge the gap. At Western States Metal Roofing, we are always happy to answer basic questions and steer our customers in the right direction.

If you have no idea what you need and you cannot provide a materials list or take off, then we recommend doing one of the following options:

1. Ask the manufacturer if they can do the take-off for you. Keep in mind that not all manufacturers offer this service for all projects and if they do, it will delay your job by 2 to 6 weeks so plan accordingly. Take offs will not be available for small jobs and you must be ready to purchase. This is not done at the quoting stage of the job. Typically, you will need a job thats a minimum of 3,000 square feet. Here is the take-off policy at Western States Metal Roofing.
