Roof Shingles Vs Tiles

How to Properly Install Concrete or Clay Tile Roofing

When youre doing a tile vs shingle roof comparison, the first and most important thing you should consider is the cost difference. A shingle roof costs $2.50 to $25 per sq. ft. depending on the exact material used. Installing tile is a project for which homeowners pay around $7 to $41 per sq. ft. for the material and labor.

Another major difference between the two is that tiles are more versatile in color and shape but are more difficult to install, so they come at a higher cost. When it comes to durability, tiles also top shingles by supporting more weight and lasting twice as long. However, they are heavier, and not all home constructions can support the weight of this type of roofing.

Every situation is not the same, and part of any cost comparison would have to include whether the job was new construction or a roof replacement. In the case of a reroof, terracotta could prove to be more costly than it already is if additional roof structure is required to support the weight of the clay tiles. Lets compare the costs based on a new construction home.

Selection Of Nails Used On Clay Tile Roofs

Nails are the least expensive and most common method for attaching concrete and clay tiles. Tiles can be nailed either directly into the roof sheathing or tiles with lugs can be nailed to battens.

Corrosion-resistant nails must be minimum 11 gauge, with 5/16 -inch heads, and long enough to penetrate the sheathing by 3/4 inchâtypically 8d nails.

Ring-shank nails or hot-dipped galvanized nails hold better than smooth-shank nails in areas subject to heavy winds. Whether driven by hand or pneumatic nailers, nails should be driven so heads lightly touch the tile but not so tight asto risk cracking tiles.

Because of the longevity of a tile roof, some contractors use copper or stainless-steel roofing nails. No. 8 or 9 stainless-steel or brass screws also work well and are sometimes used in high-wind regions.

Most tiles have two prepunched nail holes. On curved tiles, use the hole closest to the deck surface unless a nail there would penetrate a critical flashing.

The other hole is also used for cut tiles or applications requiring two nails. For example, all flat, non interlocking tiles require two nails. And in snow regions, codes require two nails per tile for all types and slopes.

Otherwise follow the guidelines in Table 2-9 above or the manufacturerâs guidelines if they are more stringent.

How To Install Clay Tile Roofing:

Step 1: Remove your old roofing . Once you have removed your old roof system, prepare to install your new roofing by reinforcing your frame and making any necessary repairs.

Step 2: Install your underlayment. Prepare and install your underlayment by rolling it out in 10 foot long sections at a time. Secure it with nails at intervals of 24 inches. Overlap the underlayment as necessary.

Step 3: Prepare materials for obstacles. Chimneys, skylights, and other obstacles need to be considered when installing your clay tile roof. Be prepared to protect these areas with things like sealants, caulking, and metal flashing. Cut your underlayment to fit around these obstacles.

Step 4: Install Battens . If the slope of your roof is steep, you might have to install battens to help fasten your tiling into place. Battens are thin pieces of material that run horizontally along your roofing and help to secure your clay tiling.

Step 5: Install your tiling. Working from one side of the roof first, install your tiling. As you get your tiling installed in one area you can start moving along the length of your roof. If you have battens, nail the clay tiles into those. If not, nail the tiles directly into your sheathing. Follow manufacturer directions to ensure they are properly installed. As you work your way along your roof, you may also have to cut your tiles to fit around obstacles like chimneys and skylights. All tiles should fit snugly around these areas.
