Some roof leaks are tough to locate. Sometimes the water shows up at a ceiling spot distant from the leak. If your ceiling has a plastic vapor barrier between the drywall and the attic insulation, push the insulation aside and look for flow stains on the plastic. Often water runs to openings in the vapor barrier, such as at ceiling light fixtures.
If you can’t see any telltale flow marks, and since the stain is fairly small, look at the underside of the roof for ‘shiners.’ A shiner is a nail that missed the framing member, in this case when the carpenter nailed the roof sheathing to the rafters. Moisture that escapes into the cold attic from the rooms below often condenses on cold nails. Sometimes you can spot this if you climb up into your attic on a cold night. The nails will look white because they’re frosted. When the attic heats up a bit during the day, the frost melts and drips, then the nails frost up at night again and so on. The solution is to simply clip the nail with a side-cutting pliers.

Cut your new asphalt shingle to the right size and slide it under the shingle above it to cover the area. Coat the head of each nail with roofing adhesive and press the shingle above down on top of the nails to secure. Once the adhesive is dry, your roof should will be patched and should be able to safely repel water.

Variation: Holes In Raised Roofing Seams
If the hole or damage to the roof is in the raised seam between panels rather than in the flat area of a panel, patch it with an asphalt-impregnated glass-membrane fabric over the damaged portion of the seam itself.
On raised-seam roofs, it is important that the individual panels be allowed to move along the seams, so never attach a metal patch that is anchored to both roofing panels over the seam. Instead, repair the damage to the seam with narrow strips of membrane fabric confined to the raised seam section. The patching strip should overlap the damaged area by at least 2 inches.
Over the top of the patching strip, apply a coating of urethane sealant, then another patching strip. Done correctly, both roofing panels will still be able to move independently.

How To Find A Roof Leak
Learning how to find a roof leak is easy but accomplishing the task can be frustrating. And fixing a leaky roof can be less time-consuming than locating where the water is coming in.
Water frequently enters the house near things that go through the roof. Projections or penetrations such as vents, dormers and chimneys are frequent places for leaks. Locating the exact source can be tricky because visible signs of a leak on the inside might be several feet away from either to the left, right or below the actual source.
To find the source of a roof leak:
- Look in the attic with a flashlight for evidence like water stains, trhen trace them up the roof and rafters to the entry point.
- If the leak isnt obvious, have a helper watch in the attic while you get on the roof with a garden hose.
- Begin soaking low on the roof, just above where the leak is visible inside the house.
- Use enough water to mimic heavy rains.
- Run water over the low side of the penetration for several minutes while the helper watches for any water droplets.
- If none appear, move to the right or left side of the penetration and let the water run over the area for several minutes before moving to the other side.
- Work your way up the roof, isolating areas around each penetration until the helper yells that a drip is visible.
- That will be the vicinity of the leak.
Paint The Patch To Match The Roof
If desired, the surface of the patch can be painted to match the color of the metal roof panels. To do this, lightly wire-brush the surface of the metal patch and the metal panel just past the edges of the patch. Paint over the surface of the patch and onto the surface of the underlying panel. It may be necessary to wait for the sealant to fully cure before it will accept paint. Also, confirm that the paint is compatible with the sealant you used.

Can I Patch My Roof Myself
Some roof repairs may seem simple enough that you may want to try fixing it yourself. If you are proficiently handy around the house, you could try to do it on your own. However, NEVER climb onto your roof without the proper safety precautions, and do not climb your roof when it is raining or if your roof is wet. You should also never climb your roof if you suspect there to be rotten areas one wrong step and you could be falling through your roof! Ok To Shingle Over A Small Hole
We recently had our Baltimore city roof reshingled, with some of the decking replaced. From inside the attic, we can see where theres still a small 2 inch by 4 inch triangular hole the new decking didnt totally cover. Its right in the middle of the roof, about halfway between two rafters. There isnt a leak or anythingthe shingles and felt underlayment cover this gap, it just means that I can see the felt underlayment from inside the attic.
The roofer who did the work has been out to see it and said it shouldnt cause any concern, but that theyd repair it if we want. It was a more involved fix than I expected, though theyd fix it from the outside, pulling away some of what they did and filling the hole after first expanding it to stretch rafter-to-rafter.
Really, the gap doesnt cause me that much concern my fear is that it has the potential to be a weak spot/leak in 10 or 20 years, and Id rather head off any such issue now. But I also have the same fear about the roofers suggested fix to my untrained mind, any patch is more likely to be a future weak spot as well. And so I turn to the wisdom of this forum for advice! To patch, or not to patchthat is the question. Thanks ahead of time for any assistance!
Normally a small hole like that would have some metal put over it but it should be fine as is.
