Standing Seam Metal Panels In A Nutshell

How to Install Standing Seam Metal Roofing

Standing seam is a high-end upgrade and an undisputed step up in quality and longevity from the classic corrugated and ribbed style metal roofs. Unlike its predecessor, corrugated steel roofing, which is still being widely used today for many commercial, industrial, and even some residential projects, standing seam has an improved design featuring concealed fasteners.

The ingenious design of standing seam metal roof featuring its characteristic raised seams, with no exposed screws in the roof, helps minimize the chance of a roof leak down the road.

  • A Critical Note On Seam Height

Seam height is a major factor in leak resistance. The higher the seam height, the farther water must go up until is leaks over the edge of a panel and possibly into the underside of the roof. Seam height can vary by region, and be as low as a half an inch and go as high at two and a half inches, for special applications.

    For the Texas Market

âOne inch , and one a half inch is common. At AL-CO, we run an inch and a half seam height for better leak resistance. Other companies choose to use one inch, for the sake of saving on material costs. Just think how much a contractor would save if you cut half an inch off each side of every roof panel on an entire roof. Al-CO would rather error on the safe side when it comes to leak resistance.

    Ribs and Striations

Standing seam panels can come with ribs or striations rolled into the shape of the panel. The main purpose is to eliminate the waves in the shape of a metal panel. These ribs can be a simple line or two in a panel or a series of low V shapes, that run the entire width of the panel.

    Standing Seam Metal Roof Maintenance

Other metal roofing systems require the use of fasteners, which means that while they require little maintenance, you still have to check for loose or damaged fasteners and replace them. However, a standing seam metal roof doesnt have fasteners that go through the metal, so you dont need to perform this type of maintenance.

Upkeep is always essential, but a standing seam metal roof requires much less of it. Inspecting for low hanging branches, other metal, or debris and clearing it off is all you should have to do.

Drawbacks Of Standing Seam Metal Roofing

All roofing materials offer key benefits and some drawbacks. Potential issues with standing seam metal roofs include its high cost, loud noise during heavy rainstorms, susceptibility to denting from big hail storms or fallen branches, and lack of performance from inexperienced installers. Thin-gauge metal panels also are more prone to wear from expansion and contraction than thicker gauge panels.

    Should Be No Exposed Fasteners

Easily one of the biggest benefits of standing seam metal roofing is the fact that no fasteners are visible on the surface, which means they arent exposed to UV, moisture, wind, and other elements that can cause a fastener to wear or fail over time. Also, standing seam systems dont put holes in the panels that are protecting your structure. Plus, some people see fastener heads as unsightly, which is why using a standing seam system to hide them is common.

    Standing Seam Vs Metal Shingles

Metal shingles come in a variety of styles and offer a more traditional look to your home. If you enjoy the appearance of asphalt shingles but want something thats more durable and long-lasting, metal shingles are a great option.

This type of metal roofing provides many of the same benefits that standing seam roofs offer when the job is done well. Testing is common for standing seam metal roofs, so you know the materials used will always be high-quality.

However, metal shingle roofing isnt always held to the same standards. Its important to work with a roofing contractor you trust to ensure youre getting the best materials on the market.

Types Of Standing Seam Metal Panels

How To Install Standing Seam Metal Roofing – Panel Layout For Metal Roofing Panels

Standing seam roofs are essentially vertical metal panels that are clipped / locked together either with some type of tensions or mechanical lock.

These panels are typically installed with concealed fasteners, which are screwed into metal clips or a nailing fin on the panel itself, an hold the panel down.

The vertical ribs or locks give these metal roofs a cool industrial look, as well as serve as mounting surfaces for snow guards / snow retention bars, solar panels, etc.

Most standing seam roofs are made of 26 or 24 gauge steel. They can also be made from .032 / .040 aluminum or Zinc or 16 oz. copper.

The type of metal used, makes the biggest impact on the cost of materials and the whole roof, with 26 ga steel being the cheapest, and copper/zinc being the most expensive!

Most snap-lock panels come in 12, 16 or 18 pan widths. 5V crimp panels are 24 wide, while R-Panels are 36 wide.

Features & Benefits Of Standing Seam Metal Roofing

Standing Seam Metal Roof: A Great Commercial Roofing ...
  • High Seams The weak point in any roof and a potential entry point for moisture are at its seams. Higher seams, also called ribs, are raised above the level of the roofing panel. Moisture and water will be kept away from entering the interior of the building, and will make water run properly to the roof drains.
  • Weathertight Clip fastened panels are one of the most durable and weathertight roof systems available. The clip is fastened to the roof deck so that the panels are allowed to float. This helps to ensure that the system will maintain its water tightness much longer, and also its aesthetics, as oil canning will be less of a concern. It allows for the full expansion and contraction of the metal.
  • Fewer Seams – Because the metal panels run unhindered from the top to the bottom of the roof, not only are there no horizontal seams but, in total, the roof has a fewer number of seams.
  • Corrosion and Rust Resistant Our metal roofing and siding panels and sheet steel products are coated with Galvalume®/Zincalume® – an aluminum-zinc alloy coating with extraordinary outdoor corrosion resistance.
  • Durable – Metal Roofing coated with Galvalume®/Zincalume® will have an exceptionally long life expectancy.
  • Rot Resistant – Since metal is an inorganic material, unlike wood, it does not rot – making it the best choice in roofing material by builders and architects alike.
  • Wind Resistant – Metal roofing can withstand powerful wind gusts.

How Much Standing Seam Roofing Costs

Standing seam cost will require an onsite inspection to determine the installation feasibility and other related information. Normally, a complex installation will cost an additional 10 percent in material and labor costs. When quoting a metal roof be sure to include delivery, underlayment, counter flashing, soffit and vents, stack covers and fasteners.

For example, standing seam 29 gauge 12 will have an approximate cost of $2.45 per linear foot while the 29 gauge 16 panel is near $2.75 per linear foot. However, these costs are approximate and might represent the actual costs of standing seam panels.

Advantages Of Standing Seam Metal Roofing

The interlocking panels of a standing seam metal roof ensure that no fasteners are exposed to the elements where they can deteriorate over time. All metal roofing systems are durable, but the fasteners sometimes must be replaced when they wear out. With a standing seam metal roof, this doesnt happen because there are no exposed fasteners.

A standing seam metal roof is also unique and different from other metal roofing systems in that the panels arent pinned down, so they can expand and contract with the weather, allowing for more freedom of movement and less breakage.

As with all metal roofing systems, standing seam metal roofing is also durable, customizable, long- lasting, eco-friendly, and energy efficient. These are all the things weve come to love about the increased installation of metal roofing systems.

    Aluminum Shingle And Shake:

An aluminum roof designed for residential use will have concealed fasteners, interlocking panels and PVDF coatings. Accessories and trims will be factory-formed for quality and consistency. When reflective pigments are used in the paint formula, it is the most energy efficient option and classified as a cool roof. A cool roof quickly releases heat in summer and deflects the suns rays. The energy savings on a cool aluminum roof will help offset the premium you will be paying up front for the better product. With the highest strength to weight ratio of a roofing product, aluminum can be installed over the existing roof. Roofing over asphalt eliminates costs associated with tear down and disposal as well as decreasing landfill burden. Ideal for coastal or marine environments. If you live on the East or West Coast, look for products that are covered by warranty at any proximity to the ocean.

Standing Seam And Corrugated Metal Roof

    Standing seam metal roof

Standing seam metal roofs have been used predominantly on commercial buildings for many years, but recently they have gained popularity as a hip roof replacement system for residential homes.

Standing seam installations are covered by ASTM Specification A730/A730M for Installation of Metal Roof Deck, G90.7.31 Standard Practices for Installation of Standing Seam Metal Roof Systems, and G90.7.32 Standard Practices for Installation of Corrugated Metal Roof Panels.

Since 1938 the standing seam roof has been a staple on commercial buildings because of its durable nature, lasting 50 years or more with little or no maintenance needed to repair leaks.

Due to its simplicity and durability the standing seam roof has been used all over the world and is one of the most accepted metal roofs.

Corrugated metal sheets are commonly used on commercial buildings such as warehouses, big-box stores and car dealerships where aesthetics are not a high priority because corrugated panels add strength and give this type of structure its big rig appearance.

In recent years, corrugated metal roofing has been gaining acceptance as a residential roofing material because it is more affordable, environmentally friendly and has a more appealing look than other types of exterior cladding materials such as asphalt shingles or wood shakes.

Screw Pattern And Placement For Standing Seam And Corrugated Metal Roofs

Many metal roofing systems, both standing seam and corrugated, offer a hail-resistant shingle effect. This is achieved by interlocking the individual pieces of metal together.

When installing such systems, it is critical that the screws that hold the panels in place are placed at the proper angle and evenly spaced for this interlock to occur.

In general, most manufacturers of standing seam roofs require that the screws be installed from bottom to top at a 45-degree angle from the shingle edge.

This allows for proper drainage around the panels making it virtually impossible for water to penetrate behind individual pieces of metal.

In addition, screws should be spaced no further than 24 apart.

There is no formal specification that sets the standard for corrugated screw pattern and placement, but it is recommended that they be installed in a manner similar to standing seam roofs.

Standing Seam Is Loved By Residential And Commercial Building Architects

Many architects are especially fond of specifying standing seam for new construction projects, as well as for retrofitting existing roofs, thanks to the beauty, durability, longevity, and relative softness coupled with strength and flexibility of metal.

Standing seam roofs can also help improve the overall energy efficiency of a house, as well as help prevent ice dams during the winter months.
