Average Shed Building Cost By Shed Type
Ive pretty much talked about everything by now. But theres still one factor you havent considered yet.
And thats the type of shed youre building. This section is independent and just an average estimate by type.
Another similar example of this would be kitchen remodeling. The total cost to remodel a kitchen completely depends on the appliances and layouts.
Likewise, there are more than 5 types of sheds that you can build. But Im going to talk about the 5 sheds that are mainstream among homeowners.
Out of all sheds, modern sheds have been getting popular. Theyre versatile and can be converted to a small house if necessary.
The price range to build a modern shed is between $1,000 to $30,000. The average cost to build one is around $3,500.
Other sheds have different price ranges. For your convenience, Ive brought all information into one table-
As you can see, different sheds have different cost ranges. Since these sheds have structural differences, you can expect to pay more or less.
But before I head into the next discussion, Im going to talk about the shed types a little. Little previews about them will paint a better picture in your head!
Modern Shed Installation Cost
As the name suggests modern sheds have an essence of luxury. These sheds can be used as a studio or a photography room.
Because you can spend up to $30,000 behind modern sheds. These sheds can have marble walls, a GFCI approved built-in bathroom and lots of other decorations.
Garage Roof Replacement Cost
Garage roof replacement costs $1,000 to $2,500 on average, depending on the size, pitch, and materials. Installing a new roof on a 280 square foot 1-car garage costs $1,000 to $2,000, and a 400 square foot 2-car garage runs $1,500 to $3,200, depending if it’s asphalt or metal.
Garage Roof Replacement Cost
The garage sizes used for the table above are:
- 1 car – 12 by 12
- 2 car 20 by 20
- 3 car 36 by 24
The prices you see locally will be more or less depending on where you live, time of year, and the pitch of the roof. These prices would be the same if you were looking for the cost of a new roof for a detached house or workshop of a similar size.
Roofing With Composite Shingles
Composite shingles mean that you can install a shed roof that matches, or comes reasonably close to, the color and look of your home’s roof. Shingles tend to give your shed a better look since they look less shed-like and more like a house.
Installing three-tab shingles is a bit more involved than corrugated and roll roofing. Each shingle must be installed individually and in the correct order.
Composite shingles will not be waterproof on very low or no slope roofs.

Shed And Barn Repair Costs
The average cost of a barn or shed repair is $1,011 according to HomeAdvisor members. This total usually falls between $482 and $1,584. Your total depends on the size of your shed or barn, the kind of damage it has, the extent of its repairs, and whether you DIY or hire a professional.
A shed or barn provides storage for lawn care and gardening items, farm equipment and more. Barns can house animals or large equipment. People use sheds for building, personal space, hobby houses and other projects. Outdoor playhouses are a favorite place for youngsters. Over time, exposure to the elements and overuse may mean repairs.
How Much Does A Roll Of Roof Felt Cover
A roll of roof felt is one square which is 100 square feet. Therefore, a roll of roof felt can cover 225 square feet.
This is about 2.25 squares. However, a roll of roof cover may differ in length and width.
This is because of different companies and their sizes. For example, a roll of bituminous roofing feet 36 inches wide and 12 yards long, but this may not be the same for other companies.
Just as we have a yard of material, roof felts are also measured the same way. Also, if a yard of material cant make a long dress, it needs to be added.
Roof felts are measured in rolls.
These rolls have a specific area they can cover. Like I earlier said, it also depends on the company.
A roll of roof felt is big enough to cover an 8×6 shed despite excesses.
You might be wondering why a roll of roof felt covers such an area. This is because it is relatively big and not as small as we think.
So, a roll of roof felt is more than enough to cover such an area. When it is not enough, then more rolls are added to cover. But, a roll of roof felt can cover 225 square feet.

How To Find The Rafter Length
Youll also need to find the length of your roof from the eave to the ridge, also known as the rafter length. How to do this? Remember your middle school math! Use the Pythagorean theorem a^2 + b^2 = c^2. So for our 8×10 shed, youll do 4^2 + 2^2 = x. The answer is 20. But you have to take the square root of 20 to find the length, and it ends up being around 4.5.
What Are The Advantages Of A Roof Overhang
The main advantage is having the water run off from the roof fall away from the sheds walls and foundation especially if youre not planning on using any type of guttering system to direct water away from the structure. In those regions where there is a lot of rain, youll shed the use of overhangs.
Another advantage is it allows for the installation of a vented soffit which lets air enter the roof cavity and exit thru the ridge venting preventing moisture from building up inside of the attic causing mold and rot.
The overhang vented soffit also prevents birds and other small animals from getting into the attic space and building nests. A screened vent is also used to prevent small insects like bees, wasps and other flying bugs from getting into the attic area.
The roof overhang is also part of a good design and makes the shed look more like the house. It also keeps rain from getting into doors, windows and helps keep wood siding from needing extra staining or painting. I use the overhang on my shed to protect some of my tools from the rain and its also a good place to stack some firewood for the winter. The shed footprint is 10×12 = 120 sq ft but the roof surface is quite a bit more due to slope. Gambrel roofs have different slopes and configuration pitch but generally the roof surface is roughly twice the footprint in square footage.
This article describes the basic maths calculation to calculate roof materials such as shingles. If you have ever question yourself how many squares footage or square is my house roof? this article will help you find the square footage of your roof. How Do You Calculate The Square Footage Of 810 Shed Roof
Figure out the area of the shed plus the overhangs:- determine the squre footage of the shed foot print by measuring the length and width of the shed including the overhangs. Assume the overhangs are 1 feet both sides eves and rake then you have 2 feet extra, so each dimension for 8×10 shed roof with overhangs is around 10×12 = 120 square footage.
Find the roof pitch or slope:- the roof pitch is the amount of slope. The slope is described by the rise in inches or how far up it goes over the run in inches or how far horizontal it goes. We will use a 6 in 12 pitch. For every 6 inches the roof goes up to the peak it goes 12 inches horizontally.
Calculate the square of rise and run and sum it: square of rise 6×6=36, square of run = 12×12 = 144, add both 36 +144 = 180.
Find the square root of the sum:- square root of 180 = 13.417
Sum divide by 12 to get the product:- square root of 180 = 13.417 is divided by 12 as 13.417 ÷ 12 = 1.118, hence 1.118 equals the product
Multiply the product by the flat roof area and divide by 100:- our 8×10 shed square footage with overhangs is 120 sq ft, so 1.118 x 120 = 135 square feet, 135 / 100 = 1.35 squares.
Add 10% for wastes:- wastages 10% of 1.35 squares = 0.135, so final squares of shingles do you need = 1.35+ 0.135 = 1.5 squares, it is rounded to 2 squares.
