Constructing the Skylight

Sounding Off About Skylights

A pre-fabricated metal building is an excellent way to get the space you want without the high cost of traditional construction. People often ask about the noise produced by rain on a metal roof. Our closer truss spacing, and our secondary wall members create a standard 24-inch on center design that allows for easy and inexpensive insulation everywhere including the roof if sound is a concern.

Theres not much that can be done about rain hitting a skylight, though. Most people agree that the occasional noise of rain on skylights is worth the benefits they bring to a building. Learn more about the options we offer with our designs. They include skylights and upper panel lights, as well as ridge vents and even cupolas and weather vanes.

Step : Install Step Flashing

Next, each side requires step flashing to be installed. This installation will go in steps, from the bottom up. Place your first l-shaped step flashing piece near the bottom of the skylight. Nail it in place and then cover it with a shingle. Then, install your next step flashing overlapping that shingle by a few inches, secure it in place, and put your next shingle in its proper place. Continue these steps on both sides until you reach the top corners.

How To Fix A Leaky Skylight

Insulated-glass frames are generally watertight but over time, they can allow water to enter the window structure. This will force the frame apart and damage the seal of the insulated glass itself. If it turns out that this element of the skylight has failed, however, you may still be able to reseal it against further leakage. But only removing and replacing the whole skylight will remove the condensation and opaque glass of a unit that’s failed.

If the leak is at the point of the roof flashing, temporary repairs with roof flashing cement around the unit’s perimeter might be possible. But you’ll need to remove the tiles near your skylight to do a proper job. You’ll need to install the appropriate flashing and then reinstall new tiles in that area. Most skylights have essential flashing or special flashing kits that have been specifically designed for the structure and the roof’s material.

TIP: Use a can or tube of roofing cement to seal gaps or holes in the flashing and apply a tube of 100% silicone caulking to seal any leaks around the lens. If this doesn’t rectify the issue, repair or replace the metal flashing around the skylight’s frame.

Do Metal Roofs Corrode

How To Frame A Skylight In The Roof

One of the biggest concerns you might have when installing skylights on a metal roof is that the metal will corrode and rust. While this is possible, you can ensure that the metal is kept in good condition to prevent it.

Some metal roof manufacturers use silicone products to create a barrier against moisture. You can also do some metal roof maintenance to prevent the roof from corroding, such as by ensuring you remove snow and ice after storms so the water doesnt accumulate and puddle on the roof and corrode it over time.

Best Skylight Roofing Materials To Use

Wood, asphalt shingles, concrete tile and slate are all skylight friendly roof systems. Many people wonder if you can put skylights in a metal roof. Its a complex situation, but in short the answer is: yes you can, if you have metal shingles. However, if you have a standing seam roof, or any other corrugated metal panels system, it will not be very well suited for a leak-free install.

Due to these systems design, the back pan of skylight flashing is reliant on sealant to remain watertight. Also, barrel roof tiles, whether made from metal or clay will have similar problems.

Therefore, if you plan to have skylights installed on any of these roofs, you should avoid doing this yourself, unless you have a lot of experience. Moreover, we strongly recommend you choose your installer very carefully, to be sure that the work is done correctly. Otherwise, you run a high risk of constant leaks.

How To Build A Skylight

Do-it-yourself skylight installation is not as difficult as you may fear, and it offers so many advantages that people often want at least one.

Besides the romantic features of being able to watch the rain come down, the snowfall, or the stars glittering in the night sky, skylights will also reduce how much electricity you use. And they will help your home warm up quickly on sunny days too.

When you are ready to start building your new skylight, be sure to choose a day that offers you at least a few hours of sunshine.

These directions are for putting one into a structure that already exists but if you are currently building a new home it is even easier.

1. The first step is to remove all the roofing where the hole is going to be cut. You’ll need to create a hole in the roof as big as your window is going to be and you can use a chainsaw or a handsaw. Then you’ll need to measure and cut a 2-by-6-inch board and frame under the edge of the new hole. This will be a casino for the window to set in.

2. Measure and then cut 1-by-2-inch boards to the inside of the new casing, flush with the bottom, and then nail them in. Set your window in place and build a frame using 1-by-4-inch planks, 2 inches bigger than the hole in the roof on all sides. Nail it to the roof.

4. Nail laths around the outside of the frame to help secure the plastic and you’re done!

In order to get the most benefit out of your skylight, its important to consider its placement and orientation. Unfortunately, many buildings wont have the luxury of picking the exact location for the skylight, but if you do, then here are some things to consider:

  • Avoid lighting obstructions. If there are trees overlooking your roof or HVAC systems, then you wont get the maximum benefit from the natural sunlight.
  • You may want to consider where the sunlight hits your building the most during certain periods of the year. For example, if one side of your building gets the most sunlight during the winter months and you want to cut down on heating costs, then it may be best to install skylights that face that direction.
  • Lastly, while not a concern for optimizing its benefits, you may want to consider having safety nets or metal railings to safeguard the skylight from falling due to a bad installation.

Diy Vs Hiring A Window Installer

Skylight installation requires precision. You must make sure that the exterior and interior openings line up correctly. Make a mistake in the measuring process, and you might have to cut a separate hole or buy a different window.

Mistakes are just as bad in the weatherproofing process. You can expect constant weather exposure. If you donât seal the edges, you might need to fix your leaking roof. The cost to repair water damage if you donât take care of the leak can range from $1,000 to $4,100.
