What Is The Best Rv Roof Sealant
The best sealant to use depends on the roof surface and the application. For EPDM, TPO and aluminum roofs, the recommended material is M-1 sealant .
If youre sealing around a roof vent or skylight, industry experts recommend using SB-140 butyl caulking .
For resealing RV windows, the experts again suggest M-1 sealant, but Duralink is also used and has excellent adhesion to glass.
If you are sealing around irregular surfaces, the best sealant to use is WebSeal tape.
It has a unique, woven fabric backing with microsealant composition so that it bonds perfectly on flat surfaces as well as around curves, angles, bolts and pipes.
Its also highly weather resistant, and remains flexible even in climates with temperatures as low as negative 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Todays post more specifically addresses the actual replacement itself the DIY steps to take to successfully replace your RV roof vent fan, should you need to do so.
Lets get to it!
Hide The Wires With The Garnish Ring
Now that all of the wires are connected you can replace the light and put the garnish ring on the fan.
Garnish rings that come with vents and fans usually need to be cut to fit the shape and thickness of your RV roof.
Make sure you follow the instructions that came with the fan you purchased to cut it properly.
You may also be able to use the garnish ring that was on the vent you replaced.
The garnish ring hides the roof beams and the wires.
If you ran your wires on the outside of the ceiling you can still put them on the inside of the garnish ring. Just have them poking out of the outside edge.
Once the garnish ring is on you now have a 12 volt powered RV fan installed in place of a non powered RV roof vent.

Fasten The Attic Fan To Roof
Once you are satisfied with the fit, it’s time to fasten the attic fan to the roof. Beforehand, it is a good idea to apply a bead of exterior caulking to the underside of the attic fan.
You may also want to fasten the thermostat or junction box to the rafter first if you have poor access in the attic.
Once you have placed the attic fan in its proper position, it is time to install a few screws or roofing nails onto the attic fan flashing.

The First Steps In The Attic Fan Replacement Process
When youre ready to repair, replace, or install an attic fan, how can you start the process?
First, determine whether youre going to complete the work yourself or hire attic professionals. Installing or replacing an attic fan is easier said than done. We recommend hiring experts to help you since installation requires significant structural work.
If you choose to hire attic specialists, collect as many quotes as you can. We recommend gathering at least three estimates. But, before choosing a contractor, consider more than just the price of the work:
- Do all of the providers offer turnkey service? Will they prepare your attic, install the fan, and clean up before closing out the job, or will you have to prepare and clean up yourself?
- Which provider has the best reviews? If youre having a hard time finding references, ask a representative for referrals from past clients.
- During free consultations, were you particularly impressed with the know-how, expediency, or courtesy of one of the providers?

When Should You Replace Roof Vents
Most of the time, the roof air vent system functions well and does not need too much maintenance, but it also needs replacing if it has been in place for more than ten years.
The one most common problem with roof vents that call for replacement is leakage of water which is notable by:
- Staining on the ceiling or water dripping down the roof vent.
- Sudden unregulated temperature, e.g., too much heat or too much cold, has to be stabilized using air conditioning.
- Ice pooling on the roof means that the attic is not properly vented.
Extreme climatic conditions cause the leakage. Too much sun and cold can damage the roof vents leading to leakage and ultimately retarding others.
Remove The Old Vent On The Rv Roof
Next, you are going to need to remove the old vent. Theres going to be a lot of sealant covering the screw heads and the corners of the vent.
Take off the old sealant first using a scraper. Make sure you dont damage the roof fabric when youre doing this.
It takes some time but its possible to remove the sealant without hurting the roofs membrane. I like to use a plastic scraper for this part.
Once the old sealant is removed and the screw heads are exposed you can use a drill and the right size of Robertson drill bit to unscrew them.
Make sure you save the screws because you can use them to secure the new fan to the roof.
The vent will also be secured to the RV roof with butyl tape. You are going to need to pry up the vent with a scraper.
Again make sure you are careful not to damage any of the fabric on the RV roof.
Once the old roof vent is removed the old sealant still left on the roof needs to be cleaned off as much as possible.
Its ok if theres a little left since its almost impossible to get everything off without damaging the roof fabric but you dont want any large pieces left.
Lastly, wash the area around the hole on the roof so no dirt or oils get between the new sealant and roof fabric.

Stay Ahead On Maintenance
We cannot overstate the importance of preventative maintenance. Regularly checking your RVs roof for damage and cracking seals is the best way to notice small changes that may occur over time. Note that the warranty on your roof may depend on having your RV inspected annually and evidence that youve been doing preventative maintenance.
Maintaining your RV roof seals is important to prevent a leak and serious damage. The seam where the rubber roof met the sidewalls allowed water to seep underneath, doing extensive damage to the substructure.
Cracks and sun damage to your RVs seals can potentially allow water into your RV. Leaks can often go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred. Water sitting in your RVs ceiling and walls can cause mold to grow, leading to potential health issues for anyone regularly spending time inside the RV. Of course water penetration left unchecked over a long period of time can lead to serious structural damage and rot.
We inspect the roof of our RV about once a month. We recommend that you regularly inspect your RVs roof as well and that you dont put off even the most minor repairs. Tending to minor wear or damage as it occurs may be easy and inexpensive. But delaying regular DIY maintenance and repairs can lead to extensive damage and very expensive professional repairs.

Pencil The Attic Fan Outline
Grab the paper template that came with the attic fan.
If an install template didn’t come with it, you can make your own by penciling the outline of the fan onto cardboard.
Place the template on to the screw so that it is perfect centered. Now pencil around the template onto the shingles — so now you have a perfect outline of the attic fan.

How Many Watts Does A Large Rv Fan Like A Max Air Or Fan
Even though they are much larger than the traditional RV fans that many of us are used to, the larger fans still dont use a ton of electricity.
On low many of these fans will only use around 6 watts and around 50 to 60 watts at the max settings.
If you have multiple fans running at the same time and you are using your RV batteries the watt usage can really start to add up throughout the day.
Make sure you are monitoring your RVs power usage so you know how long you can run the RV fans on battery power.
Getting a solar panel that can charge an RV battery like one of the ones in this article will help keep your batteries charged so you can run your 12 volt RV appliances for longer without having to use a generator.
Remove The Old Rv Roof Vent Fan
Start by removing the interior vent frame.
Start by unscrewing the vent frame from inside the RV. Then head up onto the roof and remove all of the old roof sealants. If your RV has a rubber roof, use a plastic putty knife and be careful not to damage the rubber membrane as youre removing the old sealant. If youve got a fiberglass or metal roof, you can use a regular metal putty knife.
After removing all of the screws around the perimeter of the vent fan, carefully remove all of the old sealants from the roof.
Remove the screws that are securing the vent to the roof. Be sure to get them all therell be a lot of them. A cordless drill similar to this one that we have is excellent for jobs like this.

Remove the old fan and any old butyl tape that might be left behind.
Nows a good time to place your new vent into the opening to make sure it fits properly before going any further. Remove the vent to continue prepping the area for installation. There should be no problem here, as RVs have pretty universal 14 x 14 openings for fans .

Extend The Life Of Your Building Materials
Moisture can significantly decrease the integrity of your attics structural materials. If your attic is too moist, you could experience:
- Mold growth When water droplets condense and settle on the surfaces in your atticframing lumber, roof decking, HVAC ducts, and insulationthe moisture combined with warm spring or summer temperatures can prompt mold growth. Mold inhalation isnt just detrimental to your healthit can weaken or eat away at the materials holding your home together.
- Wood rot Moisture and lumber dont get along well. While your framing lumber is likely treated to prevent moisture infiltration, consistent exposure to a humid environment can accelerate the rotting process, decimating your framing lumber and leading to costly repairs.
- Cracking In the winter months, condensation can settle on your attic surfaces and freeze when temperatures are low. When water freezes, it expands, potentially causing cracks in wood, metal, or concrete.3

Removing The Old Lap Sealant
Lap sealant is a special kind of caulking, and the self-leveling type creates a puddle, ensuring a smooth, even seal . It must be removed before the existing RV roof vent fan can be taken out. This part took us about an hour the first time, and just 30 minutes the second time.
The easiest way to do this is apply heat and then peel it back. Using a heat gun, about 2 inches above the sealant, apply heat slowly and evenly to a section of the sealant. Turn off the heat gun and set it safely aside. Dont let the metal end touch anything as it is very hot.
Heating up sealant and exposing screws
Now, you can start to roll the sealant back with your fingers. Bear in mind, the sealant is also quite hot, and it may need to cool a little before you can handle it.
Using your fingers, you can pull the sealant up, but ensure that the roofing material underneath doesnt get stretched. Using two hands, you can peel up the old sealant and push down the roofing material underneath.
Work your way around the entire fan, heating it a little, and peel it up to the edge of the receiving flange. You can tear these pieces off as needed and put them into the grocery bag to throw away later.
Its neat to see the color difference between your exposed roof and the super white parts that were protected by the sealant. That shows you how good this stuff works!
