When you picture the word roof in your minds eye, one image likely comes to mind: a darkish gray roofing installation made up of flat, rectangular pieces. Is this what you saw? If so, it makes perfect sense! According to Consumer Reports, asphalt shingle roofs, just like the one you pictured, are by far the most common type of roofing in the United States.

You may be able to instantly picture a shingle roof, but how much do you really know about this popular roofing style? If you want to get beyond the basics of shingle roofinga great idea for anyone looking to replace a roofread on!

Roof Replacement Vs Roofing Repairs:

There is a saying in the personal finance world that when it comes to our finances, each situation should be treated personally, hence the emphasis on Personal finance. The same can be said for your roof.

While there are metrics that can determine whether an entire roof replacement is more suitable for your home, or perhaps a simple repair, the best thing to do is to first start with a roof inspection.

Once you have your roof inspected by a certified roofing specialist/contractor, you should weigh your options. Its vital to weigh all of your options:

  • Is there a possibility for an insurance claim?
  • How old is your roof?
  • Will the repair last, or is a new roof the better long term option?
  • Will a roof repair cost more than just replacing the entire roof?

Typically, if it is something simple like replacing a few shingles, checking out a possible leak, or replacing a section of a ridge vent, a roofing repair is a good option.

However, when the amount of roofing shingles needing to be replaced reaches a certain threshold, or the repair costs are starting to get to 50% of the cost of a new roof, a roof replacement is usually a better option.

For example, if a new roof would cost you $7,000, but the repairs cost $3,5000, its better to simply replace the roof.

A new roof has a high return on investment for resale purposes and the new asphalt roofing shingles have amazing technology that makes it hardy and looks better!

This creates a durable, waterproof, and lightweight shingle that can stand most elements mother nature has to offer such as wind, ice, snow, rain, and hail. Of course, like anything these days, there are different types of asphalt shingles.

Make no bones about itroofing is hard work. Theres no hiding from the elements. You cant be afraid of heights and you need to be pretty fit. Before committing to this how to roof a house project, try this: Get out a ladder and climb up onto your roof. If you cant walk around on it comfortably, hire a pro. If you passed this first test, go to the lumberyard or home center and throw a bundle of shingles onto your shoulder. Imagine yourself carrying that load up a laddermany, many times.

If youre still feeling positive about this how to roof a house at this point, why not give it a shot? You can skip a lot of heavy lifting by having your roofing supplier hoist the shingles onto the roof. Be sure you spread the load evenly across the length of the roofs peak. However, dont have the shingles delivered to the roof if you still have two layers of old shingles to tear offit could be too much weight for your trusses.

After youve obtained a permit and safely stripped the roof clean, nail drip edge flashing flush along the eave.

Cover the rest of the roof with No. 15 asphalt-saturated felt underlayment . Each layer overlaps the lower one by at least 2 in. Follow this step by nailing drip edge along rakes , on top of the underlayment. As you did with the flashing, always lap upper pieces over lower pieces. The felt keeps the roof deck dry before shingles go on, protects against wind-driven rain as shingles fail and increases fire resistance.

The adhesive is not needed for holding on a drip edge. What you need are fasteners like roofing nails. Normally, drip edges should extend beyond the roof decking

Apply cement on the drip edges and place the shingles against the adhesive. Remember, adhesives are not needed for holding drip edges but are needed to glue shingles on drip edges.

Shingles along rake edges are powerless to be blown off in tall winds. Normally, the nails alone wont hold the shingles quickly to the roof.

Dealing With A Mossy Roof

Q: What, if anything, should I do about all the moss thats growing on my roof? Dorothy Plummer, Dingmans Ferry, PA.

A: Tom Silva replies: Moss holds moisture against shingles, shortening their life. It also catches debristwigs, leaves, dirtthat makes the moisture problem worse. But before removing the moss, grab a pair of binoculars and take a good look at your roof. If you see shingles with surface cracks, small blisters, curled-up edges, or areas where the surface granules have worn off, you probably need new roofing. But if the shingles are in good shape, heres how to get rid of the moss.

First, take these precautions: Spray water on all the plants under the section of the roof you will be working on or cover them with plastic tarps. The 50-50 mix of water and bleach thats used to kill moss can also kill or damage any foundation plantings it drips on. Also, because the roof will become very slippery when you spray the moss with the bleach mixture, stay off the roof and on a ladder during the entire process. An extension ladder with a roof standoff provides a secure platform.

Apply the bleach solution with a pump sprayer until the moss is saturated, then wait 15 minutes or so to rinse the roof thoroughly. If your foundation plants arent covered, rinse them, too. Now wait a week or two for the moss to dry up. If you can, get on the roof to brush it off. If not, the dead moss will eventually wash away.

Calculating How Many Shingles Youll Need

  • 1Convert the area into roofing squares, the measurement used for materials. In roofing terms, a square is 100 square feet . Therefore, divide your total area by 100 to get the number of squares.XResearch source
  • So, for instance, if your total is 2,381 square feet, thats approximately 23.8 squares or 24 squares, rounded up.
  • You can also use an app or a roofing calculator to decide how many shingles youll need.
  • If youre in a country other than the U.S., check the size of roofing bundles in your area before making this calculation, as they can vary from country to country.
  • 2Determine the number of shingle bundles youll need by multiplying by 3. Shingles typically come in a bundle thats large enough to cover 1/3 of a square. To figure out how many bundles youll need, multiply the number of squares by 3.XResearch source
  • So if you have 24 squares, multiply that by 3 to get 72 bundles.
  • 3Figure out the amount of roofing felt youll need by dividing by 2 or 4. Felt is what goes under the shingles. If youre buying 15-pound felt, 1 roll will be enough for 4 squares. If youre buying 30-pound felt, 1 roll will be enough for 2 squares. Divide your squares by one of these numbers to get the number of rolls youll need, depending on the thickness of felt you want.XResearch source
  • If youre trying to cover 24 squares, divide by 4 for a 15-pound roll to get 6 rolls.
  • If youre trying to cover 24 squares with a 30-pound roll, divide by 2 to get 12 rolls.

    Calculate The Simple Roof Areas

On a simple hip or gable roof, multiplying the eave to ridge length by eave length will give the area to be multiplied by pitch factor. Ridge vent openings are best finished with coil rather than partial shingle. Using flat coil stock allows the ridge caps to lay flat and can also be formed with an extra water stop at the ridge opening.

Area for the roof in Figure 3 is 1784 ft2 The blue dash line divides the roof into 2 rectangles. There is a small area calculated as 8/12 that is actually 4/12. On a small area such as this, it is better to err on the side of the higher pitch since it should not significantly affect the total.

Pro Tip: Pythagorean Theorem can be used to calculate the length of the valleys. A general rule of thumb is to add at least 12 lineal inches of valley material to be safe.
