How To Install Step Flashing With A Wall Corner
If a wall corner is on the rooftop, you will need to create a corner flashing piece using a typical step flashing piece. These instructions will tell you how to create a corner piece and how to install step flashing generally:
- Step One: Install your underlayment completely and your shingles up to where the wall begins, so that the first piece of flashing, or the corner flashing, will rest on a shingle.
- Step Two: To make corner flashing, take your tin snips and cut a 45-degree line from an outside corner to the center fold. Then, cut along the center fold and remove the resulting triangle. This will allow you to bend the step flashing around the corner cleanly. If you do not wish to form your own corner flashing, you can buy pre-bent pieces and cut them to size, or use a piece of corrugated aluminum, which is easier to bend.

Apply Sealing Tape Again
Glue butyl tape to the end strip at the peak, the top and bottom of each overlapping row, and between. For the opposite roof facing, repeat the entire procedure. A ridge peak should fill the space between the two faces.
The same screws that you used for the other panels should be used to secure them firmly against the butyl end strip.

Take Measurements Of Your Roof Area
No matter the total area of your roof, you should purchase between 10% and 15% more material than what you think youll need. This will account for any mistakes and odd cuts you have to make to any material.
First, youll have to calculate the slope of your roof. This is a simple rise over run number. Youll have to get on a ladder next to your gable ends. Using a long level, measure from a starting point even with the end of your shingles. At the one-foot mark on your level, use a tape measure to see how many inches up your roof has extended.
A four-inch measurement means that your roof has a slope of 3/12 or three inches of rise for every 12 inches of run.
Next, you can use this slope in conjunction with your homes footprint to find your total roof area. This will require some simple math, following the steps below.
This area measurement method is most effective on simple A-frame roofs. For odd corners or outcroppings, such as dormer windows, simply measuring length and width will suffice.

Step 1: Apply sealant to the roofing edges and corners Identify the direction that water will run off your roof.
Generally, it will be one of two directions: overhanging or downspout. If you have an overhanging roof, install a drip cap on the edge of the roof to keep water from dripping onto the sides of the wall as it cascades from the eaves.
Step 2: Flash the valley and hips Flash the location of any valleys and hips on your roof, including areas where a valley may be exposed due to a dormer or chimney.

Install The Chimney Saddle
Slide the prebent and soldered chimney saddle into place behind the chimney. Nail it to the roof along the top edge. Space 1-in. galvanized roofing nails about every 6 in. along the edges or closer if necessary to flatten the metal.
Seal the sides of the chimney with prebent pieces of step flashing under each course of shingles . Slightly flatten the step flashing before you nail it in to ensure a tighter, spring-tensioned fit against the chimney. Pay close attention to overlapping each piece of flashing onto the preceding one in such a way that water is diverted over the top of the shingles. This is the key to a successful flashing job.
Complete the base flashing by nailing the saddle to the roof and sealing it with additional strips of membrane . Shingle over the portion of the saddle that rests on the roof and cut the shingles neatly along the valley, leaving about 2 in. of metal exposed.

What Type Of Metal Is Best

Once even a small section of roofing cement fails, youll have a leak. Each additional rain adds more water, and before you know it, youve got rotted wood.
Step flashing offers far better protection from leaks, because even if a single piece of step flashing fails, the water just hits the next lower piece. That flashing directs the water onto the shingle and the water drains down the roof.

Snap A Square Reference Line
- A square reference line is important for installing roofing panels evenly. Use the 3-4-5 method to establish a reference line 90 degrees to the eave.
- First, make a mark along the eave three feet from the corner. At that mark, measure four feet toward the ridge. Then, from the original corner, measure five feet and mark where it intersects the second mark.
- Snap a line from the first three-foot mark through the intersection of the second and third marks. Since the Getaway roof is larger, I measured to 21 feet, 28 feet and 35 feet to make my square reference line.
