Tesla Solar Roof Availability: Who Can Buy

At the moment, the Tesla Solar Roof is being installed in various locations across the United States.

At the October 2019 unveiling, Teslaâs senior director of energy operations Kunal Girota explained that Tesla is installing retrofit solar panels in 25 states, and it will be offering the roof in all of those states. The goal, however, is to expand across the country with both the companyâs internal teams and third parties.

At the time of writing, Teslaâs website accepts orders for its retrofit solar panels in 24 locations: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusets, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.

The Tesla Solar Roof section of the website accepts orders for all 50 states bar Minnesota. Inverse has reached out to Tesla for more information.

As for international buyers, there may be some good news on that front. Musk stated on Twitter in February 2020 that he was âlooking forward to international expansion later this year.â

How Solar Panel Installation Works

Solar installation is a straightforward process. Your solar company will handle most, if not all, steps. A representative will begin by holding a consultation to assess your energy needs and home design. Theyll then create a system based on your homes specifications and handle required permits from your local municipality. Finally, they will install the system and conduct final inspections. This process can take up to 60 days to complete.

Should You Lease Solar Panels

There are several payment options that bundle solar installation costs into a consumers electric bill, either as a solar panel leasing option or as a power purchase agreement . Solar leases allow the homeowner to install solar panels without paying anything up front reducing the overall solar panel cost. After the panels are installed, the homeowner pays only a flat monthly fee. The fee includes the installation costs, which are spread out over time, and the cost of electricity supply.

  • Reasons To Remove Solar Panels

A look at the best roofs for solar panels

While uncommon, there are cases where you may need to remove your solar panels from your home. It is recommended to install new roofing or make repairs before the panels are installed to eliminate these issues. However, problems can occur that may mean you need to remove the panels.

This can include repairing roof damage after the panels were installed or replacing a roof that developed problems after the panel installation. Because solar panels can last for years, some roofs deteriorate.

If your solar panel system is old, outdated, or no longer working, you may want to remove it. You can remove it if it is no longer working or you want to replace it with a newer system. While it is less expensive to move existing panels to a new home than to purchase new panels in some cases, some people may move their panels to a new home.

Are Solar Panels Worth The Investment

Thanks to the lower-than-ever cost of solar panels and various solar incentives, solar panels are a cost-effective investment for the majority of homeowners that will provide an excellent return on investment.

Not only do they lower your energy bills, but you also get to power your home with clean renewable energy and reduce your dependence on your local utility company.

Even though spending up to $20,000 is daunting, federal incentives eliminate 30% of solar system costs after 1 year. There are also various ways to finance a solar system – from solar loans and leases to PPAs – so you can pick whichever option that works best for you.

Plus, solar panels provide significant utility bill savings in most areas. An average home solar panel system can save between $1,000 and $1,600 per year on electricity bills depending on the states net metering policy and the homes energy consumption.

Actual solar savings will depend on the system size, the cost of electricity, home energy usage, and what net metering policies are in place, but the average solar homeowner can expect their solar payback period to be between 8 and 11 years. After that, theyll be enjoying completely free solar electricity for at least 15 more years!

If youre still not convinced, you can use our solar panel calculator to find out how much solar costs and can save you for your specific home based on your average electric usage and prices in your area.

How Much Does One Solar Panel Cost

One 150 to 300-watt solar panel costs $112 to $450 on average, or between $0.75 to $1.50 per watt depending on the type of panel, energy-efficiency rating, and size. Solar companies that purchase in bulk typically spend $0.75 per watt, whereas homeowners spend $1 per watt.

Most distributors only sell solar panels to local contractors at bulk wholesale prices. Hiring a solar installer will drastically reduce your overall equipment costs. These prices are for the panels only, additional fees for installation includes inverters, batteries, mounting hardware, wiring, and more.

Installing Solar Shingles: How Many Do You Need

Installation of solar roofing shingles may take up to a week old shingles will need to be removed from the home, new shingles put into place, and the entire solar system connected through your inverter and solar battery.

Before the installation process begins, a roofer will join you at your home to help you assess how many solar shingles youll need. There are a couple of factors that will determine how many shingles you need: The size of the shingles you select, the square footage of your home and the amount of energy you need to generate.

One thing to keep in mind is that most homeowners do not need to cover their entire roof with solar shingles you can intermingle them with traditional roof shingles to cut costs while still generating plenty of solar power.

What Is The Roi On Solar Panels

You can calculate the return on investment for installing solar panels by calculating your total payback. Calculate the amount you spent to install a solar panel system and then figure out the amount you will save on energy bills monthly.

These two numbers show how quickly your savings will cover your initial costs. Electricity rates will vary by region, being higher in the Northeast than in the Northwest. Solar tends to be more cost-effective where electricity prices are high and sunshine is abundant.

In a March 2021 Modernize survey, 40 percent of homeowners said they are actively pursuing home improvement projects to save money on their utility and electric bills. Installing solar panels is an energy-efficient way to save money on energy bills for the long-term.

On the other side of the coin is your homes resale value. A Zillow analysis showed that solar panels can increase a homes value by up to 4.1 percent.

Cost Of Solar Panels For Canadian Homes

The cost of solar panels varies based on many factors such as the installer, your location, complexity of installation, equipment used, etc. However, it can be said that the average price for installing solar panels on your roof is about $3 per watt.

A typical Canadian household needs anywhere between 5 and 10 kW of solar panels. Considering a 5 kW system and the $3/W pricing, you would need about $15,000 to get solar panels for your home. Generally, the price per watt is inversely proportional to the size of the system, so larger systems might be priced lower than $3 per watt.

Depending on where you live, you might also be eligible for one of the several rebates and incentives available throughout Canada. Depending on which incentives apply to you, the pricing may come down to $2.7/W or lower. You can find a comprehensive list of all the available rebates and incentives for each of the provinces in Canada on our incentives page.

    Exclusion Zones And You

Home Improvements the Clean Energy Way

If an installer uses SunLock, Radiant or other high quality roof mounting systems you can be very confident they are motivated to do good quality installations. Someone using SunLock isnt suddenly likely to get lazy and forget about its exclusion zone and someone using Radiant is likely to leave at least 20cm between panels and roof edges anyway as that is good practice. A possible exception to this is if a less conscientious installer is only using a high quality mounting system because the customer requested it.

If you are concerned about exclusion zones then it is best to bring it up with your installer before they put a system on your roof. You can check if an exclusion zone is required and if not, how much space from roof edges they are going to leave anyway. Note that if you push for as much solar panel capacity on your roof as possible, you may end up with panels that are closer to roof edges than is ideal. The customer isnt always right, but they often get what they ask for anyway.

    Adjustable Solar Panel Mount

An adjustable or tilt solar panel mount costs between $200 and $500. This is the mount type you need for a flat roof. It is mostly used in commercial settings, but if you have a residential home with a flat roof, you could also use this method. The rack is adjustable, so you can precisely catch the perfect angle of the sun. Since not all flat roofs are completely flat, the adjustable tilting feature allows you to get a better fit no matter what your slope is. Most have a range where they are adjustable and where they cannot go past.

How To Calculate The Solar Potential Of Your Roof

There are a few rules of thumb you can follow that can offer a general idea of how much roof space is needed for solar panel installation. These guidelines can also help determine how much roof space you have available to put solar panels on.

Generally, every square foot of roof space has the potential to generate about 15 watts of solar energy. Thus, a solar panel installation on a small home might only need around 200 square feet of roof space, while a larger home can require more than 1,000 square feet of roof space to properly offset electricity usage.

To offset an average amount of energy usage by the average American home, youll typically need around 18 to 24 panels to be effective. That is, of course, if everything about those panels is ideal, where the positioning is optimal, the panels are of a standard rating, and the location gets adequate sunlight year-round. If you change any of those variables, the number of panels you need is going to change as well.

If you want to get a sense of how many panels a roof can support, you don’t need a fancy solar panel square footage calculator. Heres an easy calculation you can do: Multiply the square footage of your roof by .75 to account for the required solar setback. Take that number, and divide it by 17.5, which is the average square footage of the standard solar panel size. The resulting number is the maximum number of solar panels you can fit on your homes roof.

    How Old Your Roof Is

It isnt a good idea to mount solar panels on old roofs. You will end up paying additional funds to your roofing contractor to remove panels before installing a new roof.

Besides, roofs undergo rapid deterioration as they age. So your old roof risks crumbling down if you add the additional solar panel weight.

Most roofs survive for about 20 years. Notable signs of aging include:

    • Curling shingles
    • Excessive growth on the roof
    • Streaks and decolorization

Never install PV panels on roofs that are more than 15 years old.

Panels have a 2530-year lifespan and will likely outlive any older roof. Installing a new roof before putting solar panels on your roof is ideal.

Solar Rebates Incentives And Tax Credits

In states that have a solar sales tax exemption, the purchase of solar panels may be shielded from sales tax. Currently, at least 25 states offer a solar sales tax exemption and 36 states offer solar property tax incentives. By using our solar calculator quiz, you can check the incentives that are available for you!

    How The Installation Process Works

The solar installation process is quite simple. The process might be different for other solar installers but for us there are four basic steps involved:

    1. Free Appraisal after a quick phone call and some number crunching, you will be provided a very high-level ballpark estimate remotely, based off satellite imagery in the area.

We ask that you provide your address, and kWh consumption as well as some general information on your goals and what you hope to achieve and when you hope to achieve it.

Those last two points are extremely important to us everyone has different goals and we want to really make sure we are taking care of your exact needs.

Although estimates can be given remotely, visiting the site is prudent prior to installation. During a site appraisal, your existing electrical infrastructure will be inspected noting any upgrades that may be required. Similarly, your trusses and/or shingles may be inspected to ensure that a solar power system is viable on your home.

If your trusses, membranes or general structure are not in perfect condition, a Professional Engineer will be called to verify the structural integrity of the building.

    2. Proposal we will then draw up a detailed proposal for you.

    3. Construction Most solar panel installations can be completed in just one to two days.
