Short Answer

Wrapping your cars roof will generally cost between $45 and $55 if you do it yourself, or about $250 for a professional job. Costs will largely depend on the size of the area you need to cover, as well as the vinyl type and finish. Below, we provide a breakdown of the costs to wrap your roof yourself or to hire a professional to do the work.

Vinyl Wrap Material And Grade

Vinyl brand, material type and grade are extremely important to having a great wrap. A quality vehicle wrap will always be printed on a premium grade cast vinyl material. Anything less than using a cast vinyl with a hard laminate film, for UV and color fade protection, is considered a subpar wrap. Always insist on knowing exactly what material will be used on your wrap including the manufacturer name, material number and laminate. We had so many of our clients come to us to wrap or rewrap a vehicle and state that the previous company stated they were using 3M or Avery for their wrap. Well, that might be, but 3M and Avery have thousands of vinyl wrap material products. Manufacturers of vinyl material have numerous grades of material from short term low quality films to long term high performance vinyl. Always insist that the material brand and model number be included in pricing.

psyfer wrote: If you plan on DIY the cheapest place to order Vinyl from is vvivid. Approximately $50-70 for the vinyl paper depending on the size of your roof. It seems like a relatively straight fwd job since the roof is a simple surface without deep curves . The downside I’ve read is that ppl have messed up and had to start fresh with a new sheet doubling the cost. I’ve got quotes from $140-160 installed. I am leaning towards trying this place. Looks like they have done a few wrap jobs in the past.

How Long Does A Car Wrap Last

The less a car wrap is exposed to the elements, the longer it will last. If properly maintained, a car wrap can last up to five years, said Hülz. However, excessive sun exposure can “bake in” the vinyl wrap, making it harder to remove and significantly shortening its lifespan. If you park the car on the street and don’t keep it clean, the wrap might only last a year, Hülz said.

Impressive Wraps, which wrapped our Tesla Model 3, offers ceramic coating protection for glossy vinyl wraps. The installer applies this liquid “nano ceramic” coating atop the wrap. It hardens and protects the wrap from water damage, has a greater UV resistance, and can ward off minor scratches. The ceramic coating will help the wrap last longer, but it isn’t cheap. It can cost about $1,500 on a compact car and $1,800 on an SUV. That’s in addition to what you’re already paying for the wrap.

How Much Does It Cost To Wrap A Car

Car wraps have become highly-popularized in recent years. Not only do they give you the option to completely change the appearance of your car, but a wrap can also provide ample, long-term protection to the paint and the surface of your vehicle. These stylish-yet-protective layers can help prevent the chips and blemishes that often occur with daily driving and exposure to the elements.

But how much does it cost to wrap a car? And what does the process entail? Lets look at some standard costs associated with wrapping a vehicle and detail some of the various options available today.

    What Car Condition Is Required

How Much Does It Cost to Vinyl Wrap a Cars Roof in Los ...

Don’t expect the wrap to serve as a cover-up for an old or bad paint job. Although you won’t see it when the car is wrapped, the paint has to be in good condition or the wrap will be a mess.

If the vehicle has scratches and door dings, they’ll stick out “like a sore thumb,” said Brian Hülz, sales manager for Galpin Auto Sports, a large auto customization shop in Southern California. Imperfections under the wrap will always show up on the surface. If the old paint has started to flake, the decals will have a hard time adhering to it. H& uumlz says he advises his customers to get any scratches or dents fixed before wrapping the vehicle.

So How Much Does A Car Wrap Cost

You can only calculate the average cost to wrap a car after considering certain factors.

A partial 3M car wrap price can range from $1,500 to $4,000 plus GST. However, please note that any fees related to the design time and artwork charges are not included in this estimated car vinyl wrap price and the averages provided in the table below.

    How Is A Wrap Installed

First, the shop that’s doing the wrap washes the vehicle and details it with a clay bar to remove any contaminants from the surface of the paint. Some installers use a solution of isopropyl alcohol to clean the paint then blow off any remaining dirt particles with compressed air.

The shop then removes the bumpers, headlights and taillights so that the installer can apply the wrap as close to the edges of the body panels as possible. If a customer doesn’t feel comfortable with the shop taking the car apart, the installer will omit this step and instead use a scalpel-like tool to cut the vinyl around the lights and grilles.

The installers then apply the vinyl wrap to the body of the vehicle. They use a heat gun to make the material more pliable, so it can properly hug the contours of the vehicle. Some of the more advanced wrap designs, such as those using graphics or custom colors, will require additional vinyl layers. Finally, the installers use a soft felt squeegee to remove any air pockets.

The whole process can take a few days to complete. It’s longer if you want the doorjambs to match. The doorjambs alone will take a day and a half, Hülz said. The doors need to be taken apart before being wrapped, which adds more labor and cost to the installation. Hülz says black cars make the ideal candidates for wrapping: The doorjambs are less noticeable and you don’t have to spend extra for them to be wrapped.

    Disaster Site Shrink Wrap Services

Shrink wrapping is not just for covering your roof.

In addition to your roof, sometimes other parts of the structure get ripped apart by strong winds.

In the immediate aftermath of a disaster, when contractors and adjusters are working at full capacity, a temporary solution is needed.

For instance, after a hurricane you may want to wrap your building in shrink wrap until permanent hurricane damage repairs can take place.

In that case, you would have a shrink wrapped temporary roof along with sealed windows and doors.

Factors Which Affect The Cost Of Shrink Wrap Installation

What are the dimensions of the area to be shrink wrapped?

A large area of scaffolding to be covered in shrink wrap sheeting will usually attract a lower square meter rate / price than a small area. This is because there are extra efficiencies and once on a large job, the work process becomes faster.

What is a large area? Well, for us anything over 1000 square metres would be considered a large area.

For a job less than 100 square metres, a per metre rate becomes impossible to maintain. For that reason, for a scaffolding encapsulation less than 100 square metres we would charge a day rate of £495/man day rate .

What is the purpose of the proposed shrink wrap?

The purpose of the scaffold encapsulation can also make a difference. Is it for weather protection, environmental containment or for the appearance of the sheeting. Although the grade of material we use is the same, a scaffolding project which requires fully encapsulating for the environmental containment of shot blasting, will need to be completely sealed. This final seal can involve the installation of a skirt around the bottom of a project to the floor, it may involve sheeting up to and sealing against a wall. This last but essential stage can be time consuming.

Origins Of The Roof Vinyl Look

Originally, vinyl roof wraps were developed to mimic the look of a convertible car.

In fact, the history of this look can be traced back almost to the start of the history of the automobile. Early cars such as the 1929 Ford Model A Special Coupe had a roof covered in vinyl-like material designed to look like the moveable top of a horse-drawn carriage.

Since then, vinyl roofs have featured on some of the most classic cars ever made. One of the first cars to come with a modern vinyl roof as standard was the 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Seville. They later appeared on Lincoln Cosmopolitan coupes, Chryslers Dodge Dart, and the first Ford Mustang.

How To Maintain Your Vinyl Car Wraps

If youve just recently gotten your car wrapped, the next thing for you to think about is how to conduct proper maintenance.

Although vinyl wrap is used as protection, it also needs to be cleaned regularly in order to keep the colors looking vibrant and fresh. Heres a couple of things that you can do to ensure the quality of your vinyl car wrap:

    • Give It A Wash

If you use your car a lot, the wrap should be washed about once a week.

The best way is to wash it by hand using a commercial cleaner such as 3M Car Wash Soap 39000 or Meguiars NXT Generation Car Wash. The 3M soap costs about $15 for a bottle of 16 fluid ounces while the NXT Generation soap costs $9.

A good finisher coat of wax helps use 3M Quick Detailer Spray or Meguiars Ultimate Quik Wax. A 16 fluid-ounce bottle of 3M wax is priced at around $13 while Meguiars product costs about the same for a 15.2 fluid-ounce bottle.

Make sure you use a soft and clean sponge to do the actual cleaning. Rinse the car well after washing. A squeegee can help to remove dried watermarks and a dry microfiber cloth will sop up the last of the moisture.

Its recommended to hand wash, as a drive-through car wash might use bristles and brushes which are too rough and damage the vinyl. If you see bird droppings, insects, or tree sap, do not leave them in contact for long conduct a cleaning session as soon as possible.
