Are You Sure My Flat Roof Does Not Need A Primer Coat Do I Need To Prime Metal Flashing Or Other Metal Surfaces

Metal flashing should either be primed with an exterior metal primer, or lightly sanded. Most other flat roof / low pitch roof surfaces do not require a primer before applying GacoPro. GacoPro: the two coat system has a “built in” primer and the GacoPro Eco system uses a two part primer called E5320. Contact us to find out more.

Silicone Washes Off In The Rain

You can always tell that someone is used to working with acrylic coatings when they say this. If you apply an acrylic coating and it rains within a couple hours, youll find your material washed off the roof and in the parking lot before long. Acrylic coatings are known to wash off in rain. Due to their chemistry, silicone coatings cure faster in the presence of moisture, so rain isnt a problem. They dont wash off. There is simply no truth to this myth.

How Did Gaco Help Solve The Problem With Our Silicone Roofing Solutions

The contractor was able to give the building owner options by offering a re-roof or a restorative Gaco Silicone Roof Coating application. The Gaco Silicone Roof Coating application was selected for this project because the owner trusted the contractor and the cost savings of choosing a coating over a roof replacement was very beneficial.

This project involved moving rock ballast into rows to prevent wind uplift and brushing, sweeping, and blowing excess dirt off the roof. The roof was inspected for tears, rips, and open seams, which were repaired. Then, the existing EPDM membrane was power washed twice with GacoWash cleaner. All seams and penetrations were sealed with GacoFlex SeamSeal, and the surface was primed with GacoFlex E5320 . The contractor then installed Gaco S2000 silicone coating on the roof surface to comply with the 15-year warranty specifications.

To finish, an approved protective leak barrier was installed over the silicone roof coating and the windrows were moved back on top of the completed areas. The entire process was repeated on the exposed EPDM.

Now that you have cleaned, fixed, and prepped your roof, youre ready to apply GacoRoof. You likely wont be working in these conditions, but as a reminder, you should only apply GacoRoof when the existing substrate is above 32° and below 120°.

Before you apply GacoRoof make sure you ensure color consistency by using a clean, dry stir stick or mixing paddle. For optimum coverage, apply the first coat of GacoRoof with one color and the second coat with another. In doing this, youll know what has been coated and what hasnt.

Be sure to plan accordingly: Two coats are required at a coverage rate of one gallon for every 100 square feet per coat. When planning your project, take the total amount of square feet, divide by 50 and you will have the number of gallons required to do the job. Remember to split the required number of gallons into two colors, and always lean toward applying more coating than less.

Once youve ensured color consistency, use a roller to evenly apply the first coat of GacoRoof at 16 wet mils. Let dry until the first coat can be safely walked onthis could take anywhere from three to 12 hours.

Once the first coat is dry, apply the second coat at 16 wet mils. At a minimum, you should apply two coats and have a depth of 22 dry mils for the finished product.

Skinning is when the topmost layer of coating begins to cure in the can. Silicone is moisture-cured, so high heat and humidity will cause the product to skin. If surface skins, remove skinned material from container. To minimise skinning over several days, gently pour about 12mm layer of 100% mineral spirits on top of product until it is completely covered and do not move can until ready to reuse. A Roof Coating Thats Good For The Environment

GacoRoofs versatility and reflectivity has a positive impact on the environment. GacoRoofs ability to adhere to a wide array of substrates often eliminates the need for costly tear offs of existing roofing material that all too often needlessly end up as landfill.

GacoRoofs high degree of reflectivity also helps the environment by keeping our cities cooler by reducing the growing problem of Heat Island Effect. Dark materials absorb and retain heat from the sun. GacoRoof reflects the suns rays.

In the sun a black surface can be as much as 70 degrees Fahrenheit or 40 degrees Celsius warmer than a white/reflective roof. When many dark or black roofs along with asphalt parking lots and streets are crowded together in a city the temperature phenomenon known as the Heat Island Effect occurs.

The term Heat Island Effect refers to urban air and surface temperatures that are higher than nearby rural areas.

Many U.S. cities and suburbs have air temperatures up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the surrounding natural land cover.
