Japanese Style Patio Roof

DIY Patio Roof Build

This patio roof conjures up images of Japanese houses. The wooden posts support the exposed beams that overhang a little bit.

The latticework allows natural light to pass through so that you will be covered partially. The lanterns hanging over the green couches accentuate the Japanese style of this patio.

And to make it look like a Japanese traditional house, some bamboos are grown next to and in front of the patio.

Pros:

  • The latticework does not completely block the natural light so that it can still pass through the patio roof.

Cons:

  • The roof cannot protect you from the rain.

Here Are Some Other Things To Consider When Thinking About Adding A Roof Over An Existing Deck Or A New Outdoor Structure:

  • You can have both. A partly roofed, partly open structure can provide the best of both worlds. Alternatively, you might like to consider growing a climbing plant over a pergola, which will provide some protection from rain and sun.
  • If you like the sun but are not such a fan of the rain, polycarbonate roofing may be a great choice. These roofing sheets come in a variety of shades and ridge profiles. They provide protection from UV rays but, with less shading, let in lots of sunlight.
  • Also consider the style of your house. A pergola, patio or verandah that perfectly matches the style of your house will always be a great investment for you and any future owners of your home.

How To Build A Patio Cover With A Corrugated Metal Roof

23 Cool How To Put A Roof Over A Deck

Learn the basics of building a patio cover with a corrugated metal roof.

One of the simplest and most affordable ways to add some shade and cover to your outdoor space.

One of the most basic and cost effective ways to create a great shady covered area for your patio space is a patio cover made with a corrugated metal roof.

The corrugated metal is inexpensive to purchase, lightweight to install, and provides a sturdy way to keep both the rain and hot sun off your patio.

The corrugations naturally channel the water downward along the slope of the roof either into a gutter or into the landscaping, much in the same way a sloped patio channels water away from your foundation.

After the pilot holes are drilled, installing the panels is a simple task. Put the panel in place and screw each fastener into place through your pilot holes. You may want to add a small bead of caulk around the pilot hole to help make an even better seal between the roofing and fastener. When you need to install your next row of panels, overlap the roofing by several inches. Run several beads of caulk along the overlapping edges of the panel and sandwich them together to prevent leaks.

As A Final Word Of Warning Dont Forget To Check Building Codes Before Embarking On A Project As Simple As A Patio Roof

If you thought youd be off Scott free when building a small structure like a patio roof, think again.

Depending on where you live, your city may have specific building codes that govern what type of structure can be built onto your home to cover a patio.

On top of that, your local homeowners association may also prohibit permanent structures added onto a house.

For example, some cities have strict guidelines that a one-story patio cover structure should not exceed 12 feet in height when attached to a residence. When building a patio cover onto a home, it must only be used for recreational purposes.

Before hammering that first nail into your patio roof, you may need a building permit. As a homeowner, you will have to prepare accurate, legible, and complete drawings of your patio roof plans. A city department will likely review your drawings in detail to check that they comply with local Zoning Ordinance and Building Codes prior to issuing a permit.

To review, your residential building permit application for a patio roof is likely to require:

And dont forget property specifics may have additional requirements in order to gain approval for a residential building permit. A house on a hillside may require a grading and drainage plan before patio roof construction can begin houses located in historic preservation subdivisions may require additional approval from local historic preservation offices.

Mounting The Patio Roof Ledger

Procedures for mounting a ledger depend on the type of siding on the house. Relatively flat siding can remain intact, but clapboard, beveled wood, metal, or vinyl siding should always be cut away.

If you have beveled horizontal siding, then use an inverted piece of siding, as shown in the illustration here, to create a plumb, flat surface for attaching the ledger.

If your siding is not beveled, you can simply screw the ledger tightly to it.

Remove enough of the siding so you can tuck flashing behind the siding above the ledger and allow it to overhang the siding below the ledger.

When cutting wood siding, adjust the blade of the circular saw so it cuts just the siding and not the sheathing underneath. Also, do not let the blade cut beyond the layout lines. If you are cutting vinyl siding, you can use a sharp utility knife instead.

A ledger should be affixed to strong parts of the houses framing, such as second-floor joists or wall studs. The strongest ledger connection relies on bolts that run through the ledger and the house sheathing and rim or band joist and then are fastened with nuts and washers affixed from the other side. When access to the other side is unfeasible, use lag screws with washers instead of bolts, as shown in the illustration.

If it is impossible to attach the ledger to a floor joist, then fasten the ledger to wall studs, which are generally located on 16-inch centers and doubled up around doors, windows, and other openings.

We love our new patio pergola, but the only thing that could make it better was installing a clear pergola roof. Now even if it decides to rain for an entire month , we can still enjoy gatherings on the patio.

Adding a roof to a pergola seems like a big deal, but we partnered with the Home Depot to make it easy! Now we cannot wait for another storm so we can test out our new clear pergola roof.

After installing the SunTuf corrugated roofing on the kids outdoor playhouse, I knew I wanted to use it again. It looks so nice and is absolutely DIY friendly.

But my favorite part is that it lets the light in but blocks out the UV rays. Blocking UV rays on the patio means all our patio furniture will last longer. No more fading and sun bleaching! And we can enjoy the patio even if the weather decides to rain out another of our parties!

The biggest decision we had was whether to use the same Solar Gray color on the patio as we had on the playhouse roof. I love that the playhouse has the extra shading so the kids can play in it all summer long and it stays a bit cooler.

Originally I had planned on using the shading color for the patio pergola too. Then I realized the patio is completely shaded by the house in the late afternoon on and our neighbors trees block most of the direct sun in the morning, so we would only have direct sun for a small portion of the day.

Install The Drip Edge

How To Build Small Covered Patio Roof And Concrete Floor – Do It Better Yourself And Save Money

Metal drip edge isnt usually required , but it gives roof edges a nice finished look, prevents shingles from curling over the edge, and keeps water from running directly down your fascia boards.

Before you install the underlayment, fasten the drip edge that covers the fascia on the eaves. The whole length of the fascia is probably not perfectly straight, so dont snap a line just hold the drip edge snug against the fascia and fasten it through the top into the decking with roofing nails. Nail it every couple of feet.

Install the drip edge on the gable ends of the roof after you finish installing your underlayment. Start at the bottom side of the gable, and overlap the sections of drip edge a few inches as you work your way up the roof . Use a tin snips to cut the drip edge to size.
