If you have the experience to install the rubber membrane yourself or wish to purchase the materials for someone else to install, it helps to know the costs involved. A high-quality membrane is essential and Fix-R EPDM Membrane provides just that.

Youll also need an adhesive, which Fix-R EPDM Water Based Acrylic Deck Adhesive offers the perfect solution for. Fix-R EPDM Bonding Adhesive is ideal to use around the edges of the roof, or in more complex areas where bonding may prove to be an issue.

How To Install A Roof Flashing To A Flat Roof Rubber

Step 1- Make sure the joint is ready to be flashed.

It’s critical to use clean, dry rubber while working with it. As a result, the first thing you should do is sweep away any trash on or around the region. Let it dry after meticulously washing both the post and the rubber with warm water. Eliminate the rubber roof flashing’s backing and place the adhesive side up. The glue is already integrated into the flashing.

When the post and rubber are entirely dry, put rubber cleaning solvent to the sticky side of the flashing and the post itself, respectively, with a paintbrush. About the post in which the flashing will be installed, put the solvent. Leave for five to ten minutes for this to dry.

Step 2- Put the Flashing in Place

Fold up the flashing piece in half lengthwise, making sure the sticky side is on the exterior of the fold. Fix the flashing to the post by securely draping it around it with the aperture pointing above. Make sure the flashing’s underneath is flush with the roof. Start unwinding the flashing after wrapping it around three of the four sides of the postTuck the upward-folded piece of flashing down so that it lays over the roof. Make sure there are no fizzles when you do thiscomplete draping the flashing around the post now that you’ve completed the first three edges. Fold the final edge. If any air fizzles form, use a small hand roller to eliminate them.

    Modified Bitumen And Built

Modified bitumen is also known as roofing tar, and its a popular choice for flat and low-sloped roofs.

Modified bitumen systems can be applied as a self-adhering compound or using torch-down application. It is also used in built-up roofing systems.

Modified bitumen and BUR roofs tend to have a shorter lifespan than rubber roofs, and they dont offer the same energy-saving benefits.

    Install The Rubber Membrane

You will need enough EPDM membrane to completely cover your roof, along with a thick overhang for the exterior walls and roof edge. When the roof deck is prepared and the drip edge is installed, youll need to give the roofing membrane time to restore its shape. Unroll the EPDM membrane and place it over the area where it will be installed. It needs to relax in place for at least a half hour so that it wont bend out of place once youve applied the bonding adhesive.

Once the membrane has relaxed, roll it back slowly, exposing about half of the roof decking, and apply the bonding adhesive using a paint roller, leaving a 6 border around the edge. Youll need to attach the membrane while the adhesive is still wet by rolling it carefully back into place.

On hot days the adhesive will dry faster, so you may need to work with smaller areas at a time.

Once the roof membrane is in place, you can use a push broom to sweep out air bubbles and improve the bond. Continue rolling back the membrane and applying adhesive until all of the roofing material is in place.

    What Is Rubber Roofing

Also known as EPDM, rubber roofing is the most long-lasting system of roofing on flat roof surfaces. You can also use it as a weatherproofing solution. EPDM consists of ethylene and propylene sourced from oil and natural gas.

Rubber roofing materials come in black or white colors. They also come in a range of widths, contingent on the requirements required for the installation. You can install the EPDM in three different ways: mechanically attached, ballasted, and fully adhered.

Before beginning the installation process it is essential to be prepared with all the materials and tools in your possession so you wont be lacking these. Heres a list of the materials youll require:

    • Roof made of rubber
    • Shears made of metal or saw
    • Electric sander

You can manually sand however we suggest using an electric sander to get faster and more effective results. If youre not able to purchase this device it is possible to borrow or rent one from a friend.

Shears are only required in the event that your RV has an old metal roof that requires replacement. If the roof is already roofing made of rubber, there is no need for shears.

When deciding to take a look at my rubber roof on my camper to see if any repairs were needed, I wondered why rubber roofs are becoming more common on campers and RVs. It turns out there are several reasons. Rubber roofs are cheaper to maintain or repair, have low weight, are less slippery, and less likely to have weather damage.

But there are also 2 main types of rubber roof and they require different maintenance. There are ways to tell which type of roof you have and what maintenance you need to complete on the rubber roof of your RV.

The final edges may be small, but they take time and care to do right. Youll need to apply adhesive to the border around the edge. Next, youll need to seal the corners using pressure-sensitive flashing. Youll also need to use flashing to create watertight seals for vents and other things that penetrate the roof. Silicone sealant is used to seal all the edges to prevent moisture from entering the membrane. Finally, you can remove excess membrane by trimming it.

Why Does A Rubber Roof Prevent Leaks

A rubber roof is an ideal choice for any building because it can provide insulation, prevent leaks, and lower heating costs.

A thick layer of rubber along with reinforcing fibers are used to create a durable rubber roofing membrane that serves as the first line of defense against the elements.

The top side of this material will be exposed to sun, rain and wind. On the under side, there is another protective layer that will not allow any water or moisture to pass through it.

When any roof starts failing, the first thing you want to check is whether its time for a new roofing shingle installation or if some additional repairs can be made.

Water stains on ceilings may indicate that the roof has a minor leak. This is probably what you will find in simple cases of roof failure.

However, these stains may also be caused by other issues- poorly installed flashing, flashing that has been damaged as a result of hail damage or high winds, and caulking around skylights, chimneys or vent pipes that have been disturbed.

How To Install Rubber Roof Yourself

Whether it is a flat roof or pitched roof, a rubber roof is a great choice to ensure against leaks from rainwater or snow. When water sits on the roof, it is easy to find ways to come into the roof structure. A rubber roof will prevent this leak by making the water goes down the roof.

    Prepare The Roof Deck

The roof deck should be thoroughly clean from any oil or grime, and you should sand any sharp edges of the plywood or OSB board. Even a small amount of moisture can lead to problems with the adhesive, so its essential that everything is dry before you begin your EPDM installation.

If youre installing your EPDM over an existing roof, you should cover it with clean, sanded plywood or OSB board to provide a barrier to protect the membrane. If youre applying the EPDM directly to roof decking, you should consider adding a layer of insulation to prevent problems with water vapor. Install it according to the manufacturers guidelines. For better insulation, you can use chemical adhesive.

What Is The Best Rv Roof Material

    EPDM Rubber Roofing Experts

Rubber roofing is becoming increasingly popular as the material for roofs for several decades now, out-competing metallic and fiberglass roofs. There are two rubber materials that are commonly used in roofing.

    • EPDM: Ethylene propylene diene monomer
    • TPO: thermoplastic polyolefin

Both EPDM and TPO are used not only for roofing RVs but also for building construction. EPDM has been commonly used for low-slope roofs for many decades now, like shopping malls. Since the 1990s it has been slowly replaced by TPO in some cases. However, both are highly durable roofing materials and are suitable for travel trailer roofs.

Long-lasting repairs to an EPDM roofing system requires the right repair materials and careful prep of the repair area. EPDM roofing membrane is made with synthetic rubber and is not compatible with asphalt-based products. This includes any type of roof cement flashing as well as any asphalt-based roof coating, including aluminum roof coating. These materials will contaminate the EPDM rubber membrane, leading to a more extensive repair.

Patching materials for EPDM roofing are sold as either standard membrane materials that require separate adhesive or as pressure-sensitive materials that have the adhesive pre-applied to the underside of the membrane. Patching materials also are sold in kits that include cleaner, primer, and roller for bonding the patch. These kits can be expensive, but they may include enough material to make several repairs.

Guide To Installing An Epdm Rubber Roof

If you’re looking at all the options for your next roofing project, you could do a lot worse than an ethylene propylene diene monomer, or EPDM, rubber roof.

An EPDM roof is one of the most practical, eco-friendly and long-lasting systems you can install, creating a hardwearing, weatherproof finish that will last upwards of 30 years if proper installation and maintenance are carried out.

This brilliant investment will hold up against harsh UV rays, heavy rainfall and freezing conditions while providing penetration resistance from hail and similar weather elements.

To install a fully functional EPDM roof that will last decades, it all comes down to the quality of the installation, and a few general inspections of the roofline once in a while to check for signs of damage and fixing accordingly.

At Roofgiant we supply a wide range of EDPM roofing options from the most trusted brands in the industry such as Firestone, ClassicBond and Hertalan. You can even make things easier by purchasing our Hertalan EPDM Roof Kit, containing rubber sheet, a water-based adhesive and a contact adhesive, completing the job with the three essential components of an EPDM system.

    • 4 inch Mini Roller for applying the contact adhesive
    • Scissors for trimming the rubber membrane
    • A hammer for fixing nails to any edge or curb trim
    • A broom for sweeping the substrate and ironing out creases
